- Can’t decide between splurging on the official Harry Potter robes or just getting cheaper ones off of Amazon? Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of the key differences between the two.
• Patch: Amazon’s is bigger & more vibrant

I opted for the Amazon robes in the end because the color was the most important aspect for me. When I first saw the Gryffindor robes at the parks, I was incredibly disappointed and I actually shouted, “Why is Gryffindor MAROON!?? Ron HATES maroon!” inside the store. 🤪
I have never regretted my Amazon robe because I absolutely LOVE the bright red color. The only thing I would change about my Amazon robe is the length, because I find that it is too short and therefore makes ME look short. Otherwise, it is the perfect robe for me!

I have the official Ravenclaw robe, and I would say, that it was definitely worth the money.
Shame the logo is wrong for raven claw though. It shouldn’t be a raven it’s an eagle.

Just looking at the overall comparison, even if the official robe is way more expensive it is justified. It looks well made, the fabric looks appropriate quality and the pocket and lining are well crafted.
When I went to America. I went to universal studios for 1 day. I bought a hufflepuff robe. The next 4 days I was at Disney land, and I wore my robe every day. I got some weird looks lmao but those outside pockets are so deep and literally held everything I needed. I didn’t need to bring a bag, I thought it was great

The first 2 I wore two little pig tails, I got really sick so on the second day so I was limping around with a queezy look on my face. On the 3rd day my sister pushed me around in a hired wheelchair. I could barely keep my eyes open.
I wore my hair in a ponytail on the 3rd day as my scalp had a sun burn down the middle from my part. The pony tail made me look a lot older than the pig tails did but I was sick and hurting so didn’t care.
A worker at the millennium falcon got mad at me saying I can’t have a costume cause I was over 12. She was the only one that mentioned it and she only mentioned it once.
I think the fact that I was wearing pigtails, wearing a costume that was so out of place, and was limping around. It kinda looked like I had a disability. My slight stutter also didn’t help. Lol but I still had a blast and those pockets are so handy

One thing you don’t really cover in this though is that the official robes dry superfast and are actually water resistant because of their material. When I go to the park, I wear my robe and just put the hood up when it rains. So long as it isn’t pouring, I’m good for a solid 20 minutes. If I go on a water ride and get absolutely soaked, I can comfortably wear it again after about 15 minutes
This is a really great point, thank you for bringing it up! The Amazon robe is also pretty water repellent depsite it being made from a different type of material from the official. I actually take it a step further and apply a water-repelling spray to my robe to make it even more impenetrable. @@berrycarbs it's resistance not waterproof. Meaning it take longer for water to penetrate the fabric waterproof the water just falls off and don't soak the material

Hot Topic sells a long cardigan ($54.90) that acts as a REALLY good dupe for the robes. The Hufflepuff yellow is the best I've seen on this particular item.
And if those are all still out of your budget, you can always find pre-owned robes on sites like eBay, mercari, OfferUp, etc. but just keep in mind it will have to require lots of patience!

After watching this video I'd honestly say it's worth it and if raven claw has the proper colors I'll buy the official but I've seen online that sometimes it's not the right color

I'd get the Amazon one, sew extra pockets(which is easier than you'd think) add fabric to the sleeves and hem to make both longer and fuller.
This is a good idea! I wanted to do that with my Amazon robe but I just don't have the confidence to make it look good (when adding length).
@@lambylamb. If you don't have the confidence yet try sewing just two scrap pieces together. There are dozens of videos that can show you what stitches you could use and how to do them. You've got this!

The Amazon robes have really crappy buttons that fall off. I do cosplay first-aid when I go to conventions and the thing I help people with most is putting buttons back on cheap wizard robes
I love "cosplay first-aid" 🤣 I've had my Amazon robe since 2016 and haven't had an issue with the buttons at all. I guess I was fortunate and had a good seller? Either way, I think it's great that you know how to aid people when they have a wardrobe malfunction!

@@neowolf09 well, buy a needle, some thread and fabric and there you go. We weren't born knowing how to sew. It's all experience. 😂 There are plenty of great tutorials on youtube to get you started. Maybe watch those beginner videos first though, before you buy anything...

I had that Amazon robe as a kid when I dressed up as Hermione, it came with some cool things like an acceptance letter to Hogwarts and some hp themed temporary tattoos, like the death eater mark and the Deathly hallows to name a few. it was pretty cool

I wish there were a robe that combined the best of both robes features. For example I like how the Amazon robe is fully lined, and has bigger buttons, narrowed sleeves, and a wider wand pocket, but I like how the official has the wand pocket hidden and there are dash pockets on the sides

Or just buy from a different seller. They're just knockoffs from a Chinese manufacturer that probably already got their store shut down from copyright claims.

I got two pairs of the offical robe, one bought in UK at the HP studioes outside of London. The other was ordered from the US. It's a little different on my robes though.

@@Kaylurrrrrr72 some cheap cotton from JoAnn fabrics. It was pretty hot, but it looked great and the colors showed up well. I need to redo mine, so I'd probably look for something lighter weight.

I’d gotten mine custom made on Etsy years ago… I need to shorten the sleeves sadly bc I mis measured my arm length or did it wrong from how the person making them wanted it measured but they’re fully lined and amazing… but defs way above even the official robes budget. But fully lined with a big hood and gorgeous
Atleast shortening isn't too hard, that's an easy fix, adding more material would be bad.

tbh I'd strongly recommend using etsy or something similar for robes before both amazon *and* the official ones. both the official and amazon ones are just giving more money to billionaires that are actively making the world a worse place to live. and even if it's pricier, having robes made by a small artist means you're supporting the livelihood of a real person and offers you more opportunity for customization. :)

Sure… they were a bit over 200$ for the custom made but I believe the standard sizes were around 130/150 ish??? A lot but not as a lot. I’m just short with bigger measurements and didn’t want my robes floor length.

I have an official robe and I've had it for 6 years now and it's worn yearly for halloween at least, I love it so much. It's expensive but it feels expensive. I'd say if you're a die hard fan the official robes are sooo worth it but if you're just gonna wear it once the Amazon is fine.

I much prefer the detail of the patch of the official, the lion just looks better in its shape and the pale gold looks great, even if it's not as vibrant it still looks better imho. The full lining and wand pocket of the Amazon looks way better though.
I love my official hufflepuff robe so much, the quality is great! Worth every penny for a Potter fan.

I was extremely fortunate to have been given the official robe as a "thank you so so much and I appreciate everything you do for me" present from my good friend and neighbour, and I have to say 100% I would rather the official than the amazon, but in order to have the official robe it costs the best part of £75 from the official website and the making of Harry Potter gift shop, but the amazon one looks great for what I am assuming will be quarter of the price
When my oldest was 10 I made him quidditch robes to be Harry Potter for Halloween. He was overjoyed!!!! I even made him a nimbus 2000. This was in 2002. He had the best costume that year.

When I went to the Harry Potter Warner Bros Studio there was a little section where on your robe they could write your name! I wrote mine down and I’m obsessed with the official robes.
I'd like a mix of the both, as they both have good and bad qualities. My mom made me one when I was a kid before they ever had official ones and it was legit.
Official at first I was like Amazon but then it just got better and better

The official robe was expensive but so worth for a hardcore fan tbh. I feel like the Amazon robe might be better if it’s just for a Halloween costume or one off thing, but if you’re like me and wear it for lots of things the official robe is more worth. It may be nerdy of me but I wore mine as an actual jacket sometimes during the fall xD

Interesting. I like the colour, sleeve, lining and logo of the Amazon one better. But the wand and side pockets, more quality details and length make me lean towards the official one.
Patch logo: The fact that it's bigger and brighter on the Amazon one makes it seem that much faker
Buttons: Again, bigger buttons make it seem more like a Halloween costume than an "official wizard robe"
Wand pocket: I don't see the point of having a bigger/wider wand pocket if you only use one wand. I would prefer the snug fit of the smaller one than feel the wand sliding around in the bigger pocket.
Outside pockets: A relaxing comfort to have pockets on the outside of the robe than none at all.
Sleeves: The bigger, wider sleeves makes it look more authentic
Hood: ^^ same for the hood ^^
Colors: The duller color again gives it a more authentic look, whereas the bright colors of the Amazon one make it look too fake.
Length: The fact that the small size on the official one is longer than the large size of Amazon shows its better.
Overall: The official robe far surpasses the one on Amazon. Sure, most people will complain about the price, but it's better to pay a bigger price for excellent craftsmanship than a cheap price for a cheap product.
When i bought a robe at london in the harry potter studios you can also choose to have you name as a stitch on it
