Coyote vs Labradors

  • This video was taken on May 31st, 2019. A coyote was in the yard talking to my dogs. It's an interesting conversation. The three dogs are Max, the chocolate boy, Agnes and Vivian, both yellow lab girls. In the end, it appears the coyote didn't want nothing to do with jumping the fence to try and inflict any physical harm. It was all just a verbal showdown but nothing bad ever happened.

He’s baiting them, probably has 3 buddies in the bushes waiting. Keep your dogs safe, that coyote shows no fear of them.

Perhaps the 6 foot fence separating him from the dogs was another reason the coyote wasn’t scared.

Tht coyote could get over the fence if it wanted. It doesn't have any desire to do so. The coyote to its credit is smart & knows the dogs can't jump the fence. So it can safely either screw w/ them or gather intel.

Coyotes may hunt in pairs but not packs, unless they have some young ones with them. One lab could defend itself against a Yote one on one. Those 3 labs would have no problem taking on two or 3 Yotes. My 4 German Shepherds can handle any, "Yote pack." Yotes do not lure dogs back to the pack for an ambush, that is not true, legend. What probably happens is a dog may chase a Yote back to the female and some pups and it is not an ambush. A German Shepherd, Rottie, Pitt Bull can handle two to three Yotes at one time. Yotes are only 35 pounds max, many smaller.

We have coyotes in Upstate South Carolina. Some folks here consider these animals as non-native intruders, and just like humans, they are very adaptable. Humans and coyotes have a very long history. Just above us in North Carolina near the Virginia line, there are pockets of reintroduced red wolves, which once thrived here in the Mid-Atlantic states. I enjoy seeing large predators, but be warned if you have small animals at home. Coyotes will make a quick meal of a domestic cat or even a small dog, and will sometimes attack larger domestic canines if emboldened. My adopted feral calico cat spends half her time outside, but so far has outsmarted these critters. I am also raising a Lab-Rottie mix pup to protect my property and alert me to any intruders. I have plans to raise a small herd of Kiko goats as soon as I secure the perimeter of the property. BTW, nice fencing you have there! Good fences make great neighbors...

I often hear those types of coyote calls at night just before multiple coyotes can be heard chasing some unfortunate creature, and then sometimes the sounds of some attempt at fending off the coyotes and death screams follow. One night I heard the coyotes chasing a dog, and then the sounds of the dog attempting to defend itself before screaming as it was eaten alive. I hate coyotes. We used to have feral cats in my area when I moved here and no rodent problems. Now the cats are gone, and the coyotes and rodents are flourishing.

She was passed her prime and had that not been the case she probably would have not allowed it. I never will forget the look on her face. One tuff dog. While on leash two dogs attacked her and she ended that quickly She wanted to be the boss and if you didn't submit to her you couldn't be together. Dog aggressive people friendly. Watched her battle one minute and then play the next with the same dog. As long as she was top dog. Guess it worked out for the best. She was smart enough to realize not every battle could be won. Calmed her down. Old age has a way of doing that. I might add there were plenty of coyotes around and luckily never any issues. Bears also. But if a dog doesn't give his due, doesn't respect his boundaries, then he'll do what he has to to teach it. Not every owner appreciated the free "instruction" their dog got. But he loves all people. We've always had 3 to 5 Labs, and he runs the pack with utter surity. Every dog knows their place, and nothing makes a dog in a pack happier and more centered than knowing exactly where they are in the social order. Now the big guy is old, almost 13, and not very mobile, but all the other dogs still hang with him, even the young ones. He just trained up a new pup, who now adores him. I'm expecting challenges when he passes as the pack will have to sort out its social structure a different way.

It's BEAUTIFUL back there!! Awesome for you guys!! As someone that used to live in the country & have animals/pets of ALL kinds & experienced MANY encounters like this one, except we had 11 acres & the only fencing was done for horses! They had free-run of the entire place! And, so did the OTHER critters!lol Being familiar with this situation, this coyote was alone, possibly kicked OUT of a pack; he didn't act aggressively toward the dogs; It kinda looks like the complete OPPOSITE!! As if he WANTED to meet/play/pack with them! If the fence hadn't been there, I'll bet that the coyote would've sauntered over to them & they would've had a good ole sniffing party for several seconds, THEN start to play! lol Sounds ridiculous, I know, but it happened TWICE with our dogs!lol We had a pond, with a levee; We had taken in a stray Great Pyonese, probably around 3-5 yrs old; He was HUGE! His name was CUJO!lol. He was one of the absolute BEST dogs that I've ever happened across! He was amazing! Anywho!lol One evening at dusk, barely before the sun went down completely, very little light, etc. I opened the sliding glass door, (weather permitting, we kept it open a few inches for the animals could go/come as they pleased! My littlest dog, a Shih-Tzu, was yapping like crazy! I looked in the direction she was fixated upon, and it was the levee!! When I looked, I could see that a fawn/very young doe, PLAYING WITH CUJO!lol. They were bouncing around, then GENTLY head-butt each other!! lmao It's a shame it was a gazillion years ago & we didn't have smartphones yet!lol

So many people have said I am crazy for not shooting it. Unfortunately, they are now building a subdivision behind my property. I am currently recording a timeline of the development so people can see how land gets swallowed up by development. I have hours and hours of wildlife video that I have recorded that I will start the video with and then I will show the timeline of the subdivision being built. I hope you are able to see it.

I have a follow up video with a totally different Coyote. This one is a bit more aggressive in that he or she makes a run for the fence head on but stops...kind of like a fake out in football. I think the title is "Coyote vs Labs Again." I've never really tried to scare them off. I love dogs so much and I see the canine in the coyote and just can't bring myself to hurt one. I've been here since 2014 and probably seen them over 100 times but they just never do anything harmful. I rarely see rabbits around here and I know its because the coyotes eat them all. I see no possum or racoons either. I think they are living off the small prey and I kind of like that aspect of them too. I don't have as much compassion for varmints.

Many sources say it is a myth that coyotes lure dogs into ambush. The
more likely scenario is that dogs naturally tend to chase coyotes and if
the coyote is unable to shake the dog and it chases him all the way
back to the pack then the pack will naturally help by attacking the
intruder. The dog may see it simply as a game, but the coyotes are wild
and see it as a life and death situation.
