My name is Neil Porchetta. My great grandfather came to Scotland from a town near Naples in 1900 called San Cosmo.I don't know much more, but i do know he fought in the first world war.He became a communist some time after this and settled in Dunoon. He then must have worked hard and became quite affluent as the family owned a few properties back then.I don't know a whole lot more but i do know he was part of the socialist movement of the times and was a personal friend of John Maclean and other members of the so called Red Clyde Siders. That is as much as i know about him.Because he was a card carrying communist i had two Aunts who were denied visas to enter the USA.My only thoughts are that being an affluent business man of property somehow doesn't fit in with communism. When i asked my old man about him and my Papa they never really told me much.Mostly just that he was a little eccentric. All i know is that from the minute i entered primary school in Lang bank back in 1967,i suffered terribly at the hands of Mr and Mrs Mackay. Two ex missionary teachers who specialised in sadistic cruelty.Ever since i have hated authority.I'm not sure if that comes from my great grandfather or those two creatures disguised as educators.

Get in touch with the People's Palace Glasgow they maybe able to tell you of your Great Grandfathers background since he owned property. Also there is a site called Scotland's People for you to help research , you buy units at 50pence a unit and it will give you access to all of Scotland's census and records for Birth, marriages and deaths. Wishing you all the best in your quest to find out more about your family history. At the end of the film American's Cousins is a very beautiful dedication from the people of Glasgow to all its Italian friends who came to Glasgow and settled, creating both friendship and shared wealth & exchange of cultures.

Neil - your post deserves so much more than it has yet received. Firstly, your ancestor's brush with greatness is a great wee claim to fame - you should be so proud that your great-grandad could have John MacLean as a friend.
Secondly though, what you describe about your school years has to be sorted and I would be happy to help you do so. Just let me know if you would like any help to bring these people to justice - could be a long haul but they should be made to sweat out their last few miserable years.

The drumming in this is brilliant. It compliments everything so well.

It's proper "pipe band" drumming, of which I was but a poor practitioner 50+ years ago. In the right place it is unbeatable! ;)

David Duncan from Greenock who was in The Shakin' Pyramids and played in a Pipe Band that may well have won the World Championship but I can't remember the pipe band name

@Gavin MacNeish I don't think it is unrealistic, the majority of Scotland is working class and proud of it, just misled by reactionaries. I know deep underneath most Scots would have sympathies for socialism.

I kid, just a wee joke but I do agree with you. Most of us have this socialist nature to us, we want to see hard workers rewarded and social safety nets increased and it's constantly undermined by reactionaries and the UK itself.

Bruce Willis' character in Die Hard was called John Maclean, the film was directed by John McTiernan, obviously of Scottish descent, I wonder if they named him after this John Maclean?

I feel bad that I have never heard this until now. It is good and all sorts of good. Amazing and wonderful. I feel guilty, somehow, for not knowing this version.

I love how they added drums here, this is the only version with the drums here and it seems better for it.

John W. Maclean USA, 1940-Present 2020 - Grandson of Archibald J. Maclean of the Glasglow area in the late 1800's. The lyrics of this ballad closely describe the course of my life to the present days of 2020. "There was none like John Maclean, The Fighting Domina

@imposs1904 In truth mate, I've been in trouble from TH-cam a couple of times for copyright infringement, and wouldn't like to risk losing my channel.
I might put up individual songs, but I think a whole album is just pushing my luck a but. Any requests?

If you know where I can get it on CD you will be in my debt. I had on vinyl when it came out, but lost it somewhere over the years.
