- I revisit Dark Colony, a 1997 real-time strategy PC game with two warring factions, humans and aliens (the taar). Featuring gameplay of a simple 4-player FFA war against the AI, in a let's play format. The map is Four Corners.

Dark Colony used to be available for free online. I'm not sure of the situation now but you may be able to find it through search engines. If it costs money now, it should be inexpensive.

I remember Dark Colony, great game! was very challenging and scary, with those aliens ;)
The flying units actually do bonus damage to the units like sy daemons and reapers. not weak attackers if used against the right target
There are many sounds reused in KKnD2 released in 1998.
Was it just popular sound packs, or is there a connection between the two games?
Unit and menu design also have some lifted elements. But Melbourne House did steal some music for their game, maybe they stole assets here too?
I think Starcraft in this context is a bit wrong. It looks more like C&C.
But i like the dark visuals this game has.

I feel it is more close to KKnD2, they also share some sound assets.
I remember this game fondly!
I was very young (6-7 years old?) when I was playing this and I loved the general design of the human vehicles and the aliens
I still remember being utterly terrified of the opening sequence of the expansion council wars when I got it a few months later lol
I played it around that age too haha! I absolutely loved this game! I still have the disc copy I played back then! All in beautiful Polish with for some reason the Millennium Falcon on the front haha

the 10-yo me struggled to understand the mechanics of the game lol
but I would play the game anyway, just to listen to the sound, and watch the blood spray everywhere! :D
also those little mines, the Sentinels, I'm almost certain those will blow up multiple times before they 'expire' ... strange as that might sound

I miss when base turtling was a common strategy back in the day.
These days it's not spam one unit type or Zerg rush within the first 5 mins. No one likes to take their time with RTS anymore, let alone base building.

Oh yeah, I remember this game, it was fun to beat the campaigns, but not exactly deep. I still make the alien sounds to this day! Yah-tah-taporachaaaa!!!
This looks surprisingly well done for a game of 1997. So simple and still have everything you could ask for a RTS.
Eh, no. It was underwhelming for the time. RTS was a dominant genre, this was the days of C&C vs Warcraft II. Age of Empires, Total Annihilation, Dungeon Keeper, Dark Reign, KKnD... these all came out in '97. Dark Colony was good fun but decidedly subpar in unit variety, map design and base building.
Oh yeah it's hugely surprising that the 90s games were great.

I LOVE DARK COLONY! My first RTS on my Pentium 1 back in the day... Playing with my dad as a kid. I still play it from time to time tbh. But at 200% game speed. ^^ I'm happy this game wasn't forgotten. Thanks
This game is the good example of beauty in simplicity. However, I never managed to beat the Alien campaign. There was one very hard mission I was unable to finish years ago. Maybe it's time for another try? :)

i loved this Game back then.. many years ago i watched some Clip's of the game and then i run across an actual Game Developer comment, He said pretty much: We were very happy after the game released but then Starcraft came out and we got our asses kicked.. still it was a decent game at the end of the Day and they can be proud of this. game release..
I use to love this game ! Loved the graphics, the sound design and the general athmosphere. I think I'll make a playthrough on my old CRT ^^
The landmine units are really powerful for their tasks.

I always liked the RTS called Total Annihilation which came about around this time. Pretty much only enjoy turn based these days.
This game is like a bad dream brought on by indigestion. Before i stumbled upon this video i had almost convinced myself that i just imagined the whole thing back in the day and it never actually existed.
Used to play it for years . Petra 7 vents usually are highlighted with flowers around . Research is key in the game and mine placement is before you go mid game . Reapers or SyDeamons are the main unit .

Finally found this game... remember sneaking out of bed at night to play it on the family PC in the lounge. It looks so realistic at the time!

Played the game and it was surprisingly solid! In fact, I liked the art style more that the one in Starcraft, but gameplay is more on a simple side, would have been perfect for consoles, cuz you can easily control the game with a joypad, because there is a single base and aren't that many units, and the game is more action oriented.

if youre into old school space RTS games i really reccomend trying Space Clash: The Last Frontier. its in my opinion a true gem and is really fun

The stealing money ability needs to be deployed near an Exploiter or Brozaar in firing range of the SARGE or Gorem. They will take a small amount of resource, but quite significant.
Now I realise that both SARGE and Exploiter have an antena thru which they beam the P7. And the Brozaar and Gorem have quite similarly shaped heads.
I only had the demo of this but played it a lot. The eruptions that give you resource can get depleted in which cases you can really get fucked haha.
I used to play heavily defensively and I think only humans were playable in the demo. Like this more than starcraft. It has more "feeling" of space. Maybe because of the night cycle made me fear the elements...
Loved this game. Played it to death. The AI would rush quite a lot so I'd love laying mines round the outskirts of my base.
the mines are serveral time uses actauly .. they are very deadly early game since the only way to counter them is with the special commando unit which is late game
also u can place 4 firestorms on near the bridges and place a few barragers behind them and 4 healing crafts above creating a very very deadly defensive choke point

Totaly agree with you mate, i cant even remmeber the name of the game but still cant forget how the organic structure had damage and collapsing with that gore, what a perfect time of gaming. i think you are also 30+, times flies 🖖🏻

this was my first PC dubbed game
in Brazil they released with all voices and text incuding the intro in portuguese
my older brother felt sick of the alien base because that "goo" in their main base

got this game when i was 12. LOVED IT but it was really hard for me as a kid. never came close to beating it.
I remember this game. I used to play it when I was a schoolboy. It was one of my first games, I played on my own computer. It was in late 90x. Thank you for such warm memories. Do you know Z game? It is from that times either.
The intro CG was really good for the time, when the marine shoots the alien in the head.
epic game, played it when i was 14 years old and loved i, it was kinda brutal, this an kknd. After this starcraft came and rocked my world
It was cool game. It looks simple, but have some specific: units can become new rank, that increase armore and firepower units and especially interesting thing from this game - its artifacts. Use artefact you can turn around situation on the battlefield, because it’s like ancient weapon with increase power.
Adored this game as a kid. Really wish it would get the HD treatment like AoE 2 did.
SARGE (and Gorrem)'s weakness is that they're expensive and fragile in addition to being on top of the tech tree. I think they can be overwhelmed with Reapers/Sy with the same cost. Also they go down quick to mass Atril/Barragers.

Sarges have two weaknesses: theyre very expensive and really fragile! I think a reaper can take down a sarge 1v1. This was such a great game!
The weapon sounds are almost exactly Like they were in kknd2 😁 Brings back memories, kknd2 was my first rts i played

its an amazing game, hours of time i put into this game with the whole neighborhood, even broe intot he game files and was abl;e to modify values of everything from costs to , build times, move speed area of effects redownloaded and modding the hell out of it now!!!!

You should use units on auto-attack stance. Commanding them with M passive stance robs them off their range and time.
looking back at this game i can see how blizzard copied it ... i mean the humans have almost the same units, and the aliens kinda look like a watered down version of zerg :D
If I remember correctly, the steal money action is for hijacking the resource flow from energy extractors.
It's impressive how much you can customise your skirmish match in this game. It took years for the "big" RTS franchises to allow team games with AI, Warcraft 3 was the first Blizz game where you could do that (Starcraft didn't even let you pick your playercolor), and for Westwood, Yuri's revenge was the first game where you could have friendly AI in skirmish (even the RA2 base game didn't have that)
What was even worse in vanilla StarCraft, the free-for-all mode didn't exist until Brood War, so you could only play human vs AI. So if you played alone you would face 1-7 enemies with no allies : )
In Brood War you can start a LAN game with the Top vs Bottom teams and have AI join you. My guess this would work in the original release as well. It's not a good solution, but it is a work around.
Since a more recent patch, they have like doubled or tripled player colours and let you choose too. Small improvements : )

Recently they have added to SC the ability to change colour.

You do know that there is a move & attack order that stops your snipers from running into melee, right?

The steal money thing, takes a few seconds to deploy, once you see somthing on his arm blinking, you'll be stilling like 15 credits from the enemy's resources from a certain distance. The sarg only steals money from a certain distance of anything money producing. On another note, the story line is awesome. Roswell NM is in this game, lol.

good fun nostalgia ; was actually a decent RTS with very different feel between day / night cycles. I remember my heart pumping each time my non aligned cycle would start; I'd think "oh boy now comes trouble". A few RTS at the time introduced new stuff like thus day/night cycle (Dark Colony) or food being required for units on the MAP (Rising Lands), fully designable units (Warzone 2100) etc

Seeing this game and then knowing what SC looked like . . . it is no wonder it became an industry destroyer. SC literally changed "the game" via UI, story telling, and in-game features. Thanks for the showing.
The massive leap in what was presented via SC really shows the genuis and ingenuity of the original creators of Starcraft.

Dark Colony was the first rts I've got for my pc, and second game altogether after Heroes of Might and Magic 2. What a nostalgia trip.
Was looking for that game so long, remember watching it as my uncle played it whole nights, same as with diablo 1, warcraft 1, starcraft, duke nuke 3d, quake 1 and doom

Fun fact for anyone who is familiar with this game but doesn't know, the intro cutscene actually has two different versions: the one everybody's probably used to, which came on the game disk, of course, but there was an alternate version distributed with certain shareware demos of the game. This version of the intro had entirely different sound effects and voices, though the dialog was the same for the humans and aliens. In the case of the humans, there was actually a bit less dialog, and there was music playing throughout a majority of the intro.
I think this version has been largely forgotten about, because in years and years of searching for it/asking about it, I've only run across a small handful of other comments from people who know of it, and try as I might, I've never actually been able to find it. Part of me thinks this alternate intro is lost forever, never to be found, but for some strange reason I can't explain, I still try to search for it from time to time, futile though my efforts are. It's a lost cause, but... nostalgia, I guess. lol
