It's a shame that this sport is much older than football itself already played in SE Asia since ancient times and it isn't in the Olympics. This is volleyball, football and gymnastics into one.
It can be played in the Olympics, the problem is no one in Southeast can afford to host an Olympics.

Sepak Takraw is an ancient sport still widely played in the region and it deserves recognition just like Roman-greco wrestling, javelin throw, discus and other ancient western sports.

Also, the whole of SE Asia can host it by pooling their resources together as ASEAN if IOC allows that kind of arrangement and spread the venues across many representative countries in the region. I think this is possible.
The best match was Thailand vs Malaysia but other southeast asian country also are a worthy opponent. Philippine, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia. Korea & Japan are catching up fast.

Greetings from Malaysia. I am a Malaysian Indian & I used to play this game known locally as "Sepak Takraw" with my Malay friends way back in 1977 during my school days. The jumping & kicking of the rattan ball is I believe known as "lipat" ie somersault! Fantastic game n enjoyed it very much! Its basically played here in South East-Asia and Malaysia & Thailand have some of the best players. Take care & be safe everyone!

They tried to lobby for Olympics but the terms and condition by the IOC are still beyond reach. To make it to the Olympics this sport should be played at least in 30 countries and we are short of at least 10. On top of that those countries should at least organize 1 competitive match/league or competition among their local teams.
The community is trying hard for at least an exhibition match in the Olympic. Hope to see an exhibition of Sepak takraw in 2024 Paris Olympic.

1 thing unique about this sport is the players are allowed to annoy opponent team during the game. This make huge fun to the fan.
This sport is a people’s sport. Almost every kampung or village in Malaysia have the sepak takraw’s court. My kids age 12 and above played this with their friends as when they are bored with football..😁
You can see last time, Japan and Korea know nothing about this sport but now they improve really well

This sport is originated in the Melaka Sultanate in the 15th century recorded in Sejarah Melayu/Sulalatus Salatin (Malay Annals) in its original/traditional form where the game is played in a circle formation with numbers of players. In the earlier version, the game was not so much of a competition, but rather cooperative displays of skill designed to exercise the body. The modern format was also invented in Penang, Malaya in 1945 by Hamid Mydin, Mohamad Abdul Rahman and Syed Yaacob and was named Sepak Raga Jaring. The choosing of the name Sepak Takraw was essentially a compromise between Malaysia and Thailand in Kuala Lumpur in 1960.

the ball they're using nowadays are made of synthetic fibres. traditional sepak takraw balls are made of rattan and quite tends to bust the ankles and shins.
Yes correct..in the old days are made using rattan wood...its very painfull when hits body...

This is a different level of sports.the ball is hard..throw the ball up 10 ft in the air and use your fore head to knock it back up in the air. Then only you know what gut it takes to play the game. Now imagine how much velocity the ball travels when opponent kicks it right at your face. You need to have the reflex of badminton player, the agility of gymnast and powerful and accurate kick of football player and able to juggle a 14cm diameter hard ball with your feet.
Watching the game in normal speed makes it fun but watching it in slo-mo makes you appreciate the skills of the players
Honestly sepaktakraw should be in Olympics. It's much more worthy and intense to watch than some of the current Olympics sports such as climbing and skateboarding.

We need more countries to play this kind of game to be included in the Olympics...I hope it reaches Europe, America, Middle East, Africa and Australia because it's fun to watch. It's more exciting to watch than tennis or volleyball.

The first time I saw Sepak Takraw was when I was in grade school at our Sports Fest at school.
Seeing it live is much more impressive than any video, hehe.
The professional ball of this sport is freakin' hard. I play this one when I was in high school. We were excited whenever we have a new ball because it bounces higher but be careful when blocking rollspikes. When it hits your back it like being thrown a rock.
We are lucky today since they use the modern synthetic materials for the bola takraw (the ball). Its very light and bouncier. Early 1990's in my teens they still use the original takraw made from weaved rattan. Goddamn that thing was heavy and HARD... and can cut you if the ball is old, where the weave is frazzled. After a fun evening you only realised you're black and blue on your legs, back (if you're the blocker) and a bit on the head the morning after. Its a mans sport those days.

I was once a player during primary and secondary days. I still remember when I blocked a spinning ball with my head cause I can't catch it anymore with my foot, I almost collapse due to pain and impact. Hahaha
Malaysian here, and yes, this sport is 1 that made me awe whenever i spectated them back in the school. Those somersault kicks are something we dont see often, even in soccer.

The taekwondo in their blood helps them
The Koreans play a similar (less extreme) sport in schools called jokgu (sort of like tennis with your feet) so the transition is easier for them. A culture of taekwondo helps as well.
Agreed. Their martial art culture is even better suited for sepak takraw as opposed to ours since taekwando is centered around mainly kicks, high stance and aerobatics. Silat/ Kali/ Eskrima here are mainly mid low stance, close to the ground and more hands/ locking techniques than kicks.
Number one factor though, is how Korean educational system and national fervor supports taekwando. Its in their schools, they have so many clubs for the public, the taekwando grading syllabus and associations are better administrated, the society at large encourage the youngsters to embrace their martial art and respect those who keeps at it till theyre masters... if only silat is promoted better in Malaysia.
Edit: Cant believe I forgot to mention Muay Thai. Nak Muays everywhere are gonna kill me, sorry, sorry. Well East Asia are the most culturally diverse little part of the world, just Malaysia alone have like close to 50 ethnic groups aside from the well known main three, and its one of the smallest country. Ergo its almost impossible to mention all of the martial art cultures here, I just typed the main groupings of martial arts from the top of my head.
This is a sport where psyching your opponent is part of the game! Just watch how they celebrate every point won.

The game used to be played within South East Asian ... later we put it in Asian Games and try to put it in Olympic.
However, if you compare it to soccer, Thailand and Malaysia were always the last two in the final like Brasil and Germany frequently.
Even other countries in SEA still hardly compete with. However, they keep getting better and better,
especially when we have many new teams/countries joined after this is in Asian Games.
So the game will be more exciting and fun for the future tournaments to come.

Thailand has been completely dominating the game for the last 20 years or so. It used a close back and forth between Thailand and Malaysia in the major tournaments like SEA Games, Asian Games, and King's Cup when I was a kids. But Malaysia was not as good as it used to be. Vietnam is actually a rising new challengers to Thailand in both men's and women's.
Also the Korea is getting better
Yeah. I literally grew up with this sport, but would you believe me if I told you that I'm nowhere near as good as these guys are? Simply because I just watched my brothers and their friends play the game but barely engaged in it 😆 But I could still bust some of these moves but again nowhere near these guys' leves of skills and acrobatics. Bear in mind that it's just not great flexibility, agility and acrobatic skills that render you success, although they are considered to be quintessential to help you up and going in this sport, but it's precision that is the key. No matter how high you jump and how lightning fast or powerful is your flip, means nothing if it's not precise or timed right. That's why these guys are willing to put in a lot of hours just to get their precision...well precise!
PS: Love your reaction to Sepak Takraw. It literally means ' to kick a ball' where the word ' takraw' is thai, meaning a rattan hand-woven ball although today in modern Sepak takraw, most of the balls are made from plastic. But design remains to pay homage to the original lookof the traditional takraw ball.
Sepak takraw literally means "kickball", where the "sepak" is a malaysia word for kick while the takraw is thailand word that can be translated as muzzle or woven rattan ball.
"Takraw" actually means a kind of woven basket in Thai. A kitchen ware use to cook noodle in the boiling water made of a handle and wired basket aslo given the same name takraw. Oh yeah, if your "muzzle" means the thing that put on the dog's head preventing it from biting, it's applicable too as it a kind of woven basket look.
It’s Sipa for philippine languages, both for the kicking and the ancient sport which still is the national sport in the Philippines.

As amazing as it looks, I think it is also one of the most challenging sports out there. It requires high level of agility and flexibilty. The eye-foot coordination of a player to accurately hit a fast moving ball by their foot in an acrobatic way is just so spectacular. ⚽
its really stressful to watch in the final. Usually the Thai vs Malaysian, it can get very intense.
Only regaining my interest in Sepak Takraw because TH-cam Algorithm, but what fascinates me the most right now is how each country has a distinctive stance, especially Korea! I guess that's because of their roots in Taekwondo, but I'm really pumped for what's in store for the future

Thailand has been playing takraw for a long time. According to the local countryside popular to play for entertainment. In the past, Thai takraw was made of small wooden sticks, hand-woven until it was a handcrafted takraw ball. which is heavy until there is a takraw competition in the SEA Games Malelia asked to change the rules of using plastic sepak takraw instead. Therefore, the traditional takraw of Thailand is a wicker ball made of wicker wood called "Wai".
This sport originally form Thailand , Malaysia and maybe also Myanmar . It's not in Olympic yet but we have competition in Asian Games. I'm from Thailand it's popular the same Muay Thai. And we play every day , you easily see everywhere .
One thing I'd have to say about Sepak Takraw is that what you see in highlight reals is a regular occurance in the game itself.
When I was a kid the balls were made of cane (rattan) and often the joins would come apart and the ball would be a little sharp to say the least.
We'd take our t-shirts off and wrap it round out heads to prevent getting cut.
I was horrible at it but it was fun.
I don't know where Sepak Takraw came from, but what I know since I was born until I was 33 years old, I have always seen Thailand as champions and losing to Malaysia only once in the World Championships 2014-15, other than that, Thailand is the champion. Comes all the time, no matter what program.😂
I've played this sport back in high school, and trust me this is one of the most enjoyable sports I've played. It's everything on your body is working and calculating very fast + instincts. And courage to pull those stunts.
I used to be varsity for this game when I was in high school. Didn't think much about how much athleticism my team mates and I we're displaying back then. We were just there to play and have some fun. But now looking back, it amazes me how we were able to do those spikes and rolls. Sadly this game is slowly fading into obscurity. Sepak Takraw is originally from Thailand since Beginning of Siam Kingdom that included top Malasian part. That's why Thailand is the best, Malaysia also good. Sepak is Malay (Southern Thailand also) means to kick, Takraw is Thai word and means balls made by bamboo like basket, then developed to be plastic or better material balls now aday.
That not the guide to trace the origin, if you winning in championship, it is originally within this country, no! SOUTH EAST ASIAN played this in century but Malaysia and Thailand focus on this game so they are make better.

Yes, this is a fantastic game. The most acrobatic game. Malaysia had been introducing this game in Asian countries and even in western countries. The oohs and aahs from foreign spectators was funny because this game is just so common to us here in Malaysia.

Originally the ball was made of Rattan with a few different grade from soft to hard. For compettion they use hard ball. I use to play with the hard ball, its really painfull, you have to put something on your forehead to prevent injury. Nowdays the Rattan ball is replaced with plactic ball whis is still hard but less danger of injury to the players.

In Thailand, every child has to learn Sepak Takraw from a young age because it is a sport in my textbook and also my favorite sport.

I remember I enjoyed watching this game in our school tournament during Highschools days....this sports is exciting to watch live...Philippines here.
There are multiple skills required to learn how to do an overhead pike or rollspike. One must first be able to launch oneself very high. Next one must be able to rotate around one's center of gravity to land safely with their launching foot or break their fall with their arms. Finally they must know exactly when to jump and hit the ball with the right angle, foot placement, speed, and rotation so they can consistently hit the small ball when it is at the right height. So many skills to learn! Even jumping backwards to use one's back to block the ball requires so much instinct.
For your info, there are actually teams from the Europe such as Germany, Belgium, Australia, France and even England. There's also team USA. Normally they will compete in the ISTAF series competition. But unfortunately the tournament has been cancelled for awhile and last series is 2016/2017 if im not mistaken. The european, asian, middle-east and oceania are also competing in the tournament.

When I was a kid I played this. Then mistake causes ankle dislocated. Sat on wheelchair for a month. Never went back in the game. It’s truly challenge and tired. Love watching people play it. But nowadays not much kid willing to spend their time on the field. Unless kampung area.
Yeah bro! This sport is joy to watch and very intense when in the tournament especially when the psycho part between two teams. It's not just the acrobatic things to make the ball dead and defend. It's also about how to serve, how to feed the killer, save the ball, backup, how to pyscho the opponent, handle the pressure, quick thinking, understanding and so many more.
I represent my school when I was kid and got a gold once when represent my college in Malaysia when I was studying. Being in the final match and winning it still one of the best moment in my life. Until now I still play with my friends in my village sometimes.

This is the instances where the sport originates from the country and the country is really good in the sports (keep having new generation still playing it, alas the number dwindling cuz new generation interest more in MOBA). Sepak Takraw or Sepak Raga was only played in the royal courts, originate 500 years ago in Malaysia. Based on that time, it was during the Malacca Sultanate.

Yes, we needed to massage the new ball (softening it)before we play. And some ppl did lapping their head with cloth.
I'm from Malaysia and I've played sepak takraw for my University and the training for all positions are so painful especially for the spiker/killer.... You need to be fast to recover your position as in game you need to spike as well as defending.. If your spike got blocked, you need to get ready to defend the follow up by the opponent. Mainly blocking. How do I know? I'm one of them🥲 and it's been along time that I didn't play this magnificent sport.

It is one of the most competitive and excited medal in SEA Games (South-east Asia). It is played on street-side around the countries, that's how it is down-to-earth and became a popular sport just like street football, street basketball. When Asean Games (Asia) is organized in a SE Asia country, this sport is surely included in (and Japan, China, Korea would also join the competition). We wish we could show the world and include it in the Olympics as well.
I am glad you like the sport, its a great shame that its not more popular than it is now. As a multi sportsman having played rugby, football, tennis, pingpong, badminton, snooker, cricket etc some at high levels, I can assure you I had THE most fun playing sepak takraw. Some of the craziest fun and adrenalin high was when we managed to return the smash from the opposition killer or successful block. 😅

They say it's more difficult to defend than to strike. But I'm not a sepak takraw player so I only watched online. I watched it live in high school seeing our school sepak takraw team play. It is amazing how they do those bicycle kicks, sunback spikes and roll spikes. BTW, the game needs to be played by at least 50 countries before it can get to the Olympics. It is already in the SEA games, not sure in the Asian games though. But I think there's more or less 40 countries participating now. So I'm keeping my fingers cross.

I broke my left hand during the landing doing the summersault when I was 14. Yes, those technique required lot of training and comes with high risk.
We can aim and sets the ball and place it to where we wants.
The key to it is timing and focus.
In Singapore , you would probably be downgraded medically and sent to a non combative role during National Service 👍

I was broken my arm when i was 10 years old in primary school when i do my first summersault kick the ball but i'm not landing as well as a professional did. Two weeks in the hospital and can not play for three month. Today i'm still playing Takraw in my village to often.
This kind of sport is famously in Thailand and Malaysia (It is look like one country) since 15 century, it's mixed up Kangfu, Tekwaundo, Football and valleyball.
The 360 is usually used by Thais, while the 180 (SUN Kick) is usually done by the Malays.

I saw some Takraw matches in Thailand while on holiday. They are amazing.
When it comes to sepak takraw, the no 1 champion for this game is none other than Thailand and followed by Malaysia in a 2nd place. This game is famous among south east asian countries. The most exciting match to watch in the final is Thailand vs Malaysia (the 2 giants for this game).
FYI; 'sepak' means kick in Malay language and 'takraw; means hand-woven rattan ball in Thai language.
