Hi. We fix all our barn cats. We’ve never had a negative experience. Afterwards, our boys have become way more personable, and are perfectly fine. They also stink way less, and are still great hunters. We never had the cone of shame.
Right on, that’s what happened with Mango he is more loving afterward. Chewie though still runs from me but that’s his personality. Yes the smell too eh, that’s right. 🍻
Thank you for neutering your cats. So many don't do this and the poor cats wander so far and are often hurt. You are a huge blessing to those kitties and they are so lucky to live with you and Darling on your beautiful farm.
We were adopted by a young 918months), intact tom. He established himself very quickly but we were cautious about neutering him in case he was claimed by his owner. he regularly absented himself for days/weeks and I have no doubt what he was up to. We then had him done - injury treatment was getting excessive. I hope, to the bottom of my heart, that his genes are running around in other cars to this day. He was the top cat of the neighbourhood and a thorough gentleman and friend at the same time, traits to be passed on.
I basically do this as a hobby. Male cats and even some females become more friendly or minimum less fearful after spay or neuter. I’ve never had any complications or issues. They are back up and ready to go in 24 hours or less. We have an orange tabby that after neutering is the friendliest cat ever and almost never leaves the back porch!
Thank you for sharing such important information for everyone to be aware of. You are a walking encyclopedia at times and it enhances the channel. The difference with you is the true affection you show your buddies each and every day! 😁
Cat breeding got away from me once and I ended up hauling in 19 cats 6-7 at a time to a low-cost spay/neuter place an hour away before it was all over… N E V E R again!
thanks for the video as I'm taking 2 little boys to get this done tomorrow. Strays that have become friendly and are in and out of my house cats. So many strays in our neighborhood already...Good to see a more "real" video on this.
@@HiddenSpringFarm yes, they had it done Wed morning, they hated being confined inside all the time. (they are use to in and out on their terms). So today (Fri) I let them back out. In and out as normal...they were so happy to be back out and seem to be just back to their normal routine. I'll keep an eye on them best I can, but they must be worn out as they are sleeping hard on my couch right now lol. We did no cone or anything, I knew those things weren't gonna be a good idea. Thanks for asking.
The worst part is when you find out they can’t eat for 12 hours before you drop them off - which means you gotta lock them inside to make sure they don’t get the food themselves. It’s a rough night.
Next time leave a cage out so they can hang out in it, they will get a positive association with it. Throw some treats in there too. Good on you for spaying the cats. So many folks don’t bother to do that. That thermal tent is way cool.

This was very good information you put out. Great knowledge for people who might not want to get their cats fixed. I'm hoping you will get your female cats spayed as well. They may be. I might have missed that somewhere along the way. It is just healthier for them in the long run. It is best for all cats and dogs alike. Thanks you for sharing your farm life with us. I can't get over all the out buildings you have built. Top notch! You have a beautiful place there! Love from Texas ❤
Thanks for saying that. We drove through north Texas once, never knew it was so windy. Drove through a dust storm, couldn’t see the road and the truck kept getting hit with tumbleweeds. Good times.
@@HiddenSpringFarm Yes. Much of Texas is like that, but not where I live. I live in Southeast Texas, right by Texas A&M University. Hi Chad, I completely agree with you. Yes, we really need to be responsible cat owners! Spaying and neutering is so important, otherwise females can have up to 3-4 litters/year! I believe cats will still mark their territory, but the males will spray their urine much less (while standing up). Yes, they will wander far less. Without going into details. Fertile cats will get real ornery when they mate. Bad enough when the toms get scrappy between each other but coitus in itself is a title match with felines. All this amounts to injury that usually kills a cat due to infection and abscesses. That is the prime way the population stays balanced. This way they have longer lives with better health. It also helps to get them flea collars and the standard set of shots for rabies and other things that they not only transmit between each other but from wildlife they come in contact with but some with us as well. Not sure at this point. All our boys are neutered now so no pregnancies from our cats. Vets wanna charge upwards of $800 per spay so that’s a lot. The neuters were to be $400 each but I got them to charge me “shelter” rates as a courtesy so I only paid $165. We’re a few kms from any neighbours too so we’ll see how it goes.
@@HiddenSpringFarm 😳 why is it so expensive up there? It's $100 for a neuter snd $150 for a spay where I'm at. And about twice a year they do a big mobile spay/neuter bus and you can get it done for $25 each!
It is imperative that you also get your female cat spayed. They going to heal plus they can get breast cancer and they will want to wander to look for a male cat. There are a lot of great resources to get low cost spay neuter. You can see that the social media online to your local municipal animal shelter, just google local Spain neuter in your area or type in ASPCA and they can also refer you to get a low prices to get those females spayed. Any cancers due to not getting the females spayed are horrible for the cats to get sick from
In a previous video he said he feeds his cats twice a day, WHAT? No wonder some of his do not always make a kill. DO NOT feed your barn cats. Let the find their own food. You can give them a plate of milk in the evening. That is what my family did on their farm in Europe. My family never made pets of the barn cats. They should be semi feral if you want them to be good hunters.
I’m sorry but if you don’t train your barn to know that this is their new home they may wander off. I’ve had this experience with Fozzy although I trapped him to get him back after 3 days. Majority of the time cats hunt for sport and feeding them has no bearing on whether they will hunt or not. I feed our cats once in the evening for dinner and it’s at the same time I call them back in to be protected. I guess we can agree to disagree cause my opinion is using your system if by chance your cats don’t catch anything that day they will not eat, that’s not how I want to do things. Our cats still catch rodents all the time even though I feed them. I don’t believe you are wrong but your method is not my preference. Thanks for the exact same comment on 10 of my barn cats videos, you must have copy and pasted all those comments eh, cheers.
I would rather spay the females. I could never find the courage to neuter any of the male pets ive ever had. How do you look them in the eyes after that?
the neutering helps to stop them from wandering though and they are much calmer now. Plus the female spay is triple the cost here so this just made more sense. They are doing very well anyway.
