    Home brew - In addition to advantage v metal armour, advantage should also apply to targets covered in some other conductor, such as salt water. ie an an oceanic adventure, if you are boarded by aquatic monsters from the water, you should get advantage for that attack as well.

    The thing I like about this is that it gives the Wizard the ability to defend themselves if someone tries to get in their face. Especially since Wizards have piss poor weapon proficiency.

    Ask your DM for permission: I used the shocking grasp as a defibrillator as to bring them from death giving a creature a full set of death rolls extra on success.
    Details: the player makes a spell attack on a creature who is pronounced dead that has a body. On a successful roll you create a more stable spell without turning them to crisp. On a failed save. They remain dead. On a critical failure they turn to ash. On a critical success they are stable with 1 hp.
    *You have advantage on roll if you have the healers feat as a prerequisite*

    You forgot one bonus to blocking reactions. Enemy spell-caster's can't use counter-spell or shield etc. Good if you are in a party of spell casters or if you quicken your main spell after. Or quicken the grasp after doing your main attacks if you multi classed.

  • @Shaderox

    I found it quite useful as a Bladesinger wizard to have a melee spell that takes away the enemies reaction.
    And it works well with bird familiars since they typically have the flyby feature so if you need to clear a path for yourself or a party member they can do it with their high movement and even if they miss they won't take opportunity attacks and disappear.
    Remember the DM threw a early-campaign boss at us which was some big dude with a magic shield.... made of metal. (The familiar killed that boss... actually i think my familiar had like the 2nd most kills that campaign, i really did weaponize that owl every chance i got).

      Should work if the entirety of the weapon is metal, like an iron hafted (*ahem*) hammer. But he weapon itself could be damaged if it were the likes of a sword with a leather bound wooden hilt that wouldn't allow smooth conduction.

    My Storm sorcerer would use this as a light hearted prank on people when shaking hands and in late game heal himself for a quick 5d8 with, wind soul, and a blue dragon mask. Also pretty funny to stand in your own AOEs and heal while your enemies die.

    Wow. The only melee cantrip? And it gives a no-reaction capability? This is the best disengage action ever! Get draconic bloodline or (the best option in the game) giant soul if you don't trust the chance of it happening though, it toughens you up for a potential melee attack against you.

      It's a favorite of mine for sure! There's a few melee Cantrips but this is one of the only ones that require an unarmed strike. I honestly find it to have so much utility potential, and very cool thematics to boot!

  • @cubicengineering4715
    @cubicengineering4715 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Something to remember is that familiars can deliver Touch range spells, which I believe Shocking Grasp to be the only touch range damage cantrip, so for a little combo ready the spell on your turn, then have your familiar go up to an enemy at which point you cast it. Then depending on if you hit you either have them disengage if needed or if not help your next attack. Effectivly 100ft range and you don't even need to see the enemy
    Unfortunately I've never really went for this myself, I very much like how unique it is, but I don't like to leave my escape up to a roll and even if I do back away the enemy can likely just follow me anyways and attack as normal

  • @otbaht
    @otbaht 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    the caster had a familiar ride on one of the melee classes, depending on this and that mostly to be whichever went right before or after the familiar.
    familiar would use help to give the one its riding advantage and on the casters turn if it was wearing metal zappy zappy.

    Shocking Grasp VS Sword Burst - Oath of Ancients Paladin taking the Magic Initiate Feat.

    Fun fact you can do this in real life it's static electricity I don't feel like explaining it but all you do is get your socks rub it on a carpet it shouldn't have tall hairs it should be a normal nice carpet if you touch metal you get shocked touch someone else they get shocked putting water on yourself or lotion will get rid of the static but also a fun think get a balloon rub it on your hair then put it close to your hair but don't let the gallon touch it your hair will rise up!

    Would the second effect of this spell, target can't take reactions until the start of its next turn, work against a creature immune to lightning damage such as a blue dragon? I feel it wouldn't since the creature is immune to the damage and "jolt" of the attack that I feel takes it's reaction away. Any feedback?

    • @ronn-ammon8975
      @ronn-ammon8975 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I pretty much agree. Doesn't seem a creature already with sufficient natural electrical energy to project it into an attack would be susceptible to a paralytic shock effect; unless, maybe an incoming electrical attack were undeniably, greatly in excess of whatever said creature's accustomed to.

    So im making a monk in a party with 2 magic users (sorcerer and warlock), and our only other melee user is a fighter who heavily went into ranged. So knowing im the first line of defense. On our first session, we ended up facing a dragon. I started by rushing it with my weapons, and our magic users and fighter kept hitting it with ranged weapons, i then noticed my mistake of if i play such short ranged, im in the possibility of getting hit if a nat1 gets rolled.... So i decided when we reach lvl 4, im getting Initiate feat, with the spells booming blade, absorb element, and shocking grasp. I can start the match or whenever i sense a fight is gonna happen and use shocking grasp, then set up booming blade, and use a reaction to catch any random elemental attacking coming my way (our magic users already set eveery area we've fought in on fire, so absorb is gonna be useful). I think it's smart enough as to deal enough damage at once to make sure i dont have to spend every turn fearing my party will roll enough nat1s to kill me

    • @ChancesSpellbook
      @ChancesSpellbook  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really like where you're going with this! I might also consider looking into the War Caster Feat, that way you could cast spells using your reactions as well!

    "Sahing Throw: Melee vs AC"
    This isn't proper 5e terminology and uselessly confusing. There is no "Saving Throw" so maybe don't mention the term. Also it is a Melee SPELL Attack, important distinction, and Attack rolls are always "vs AC" so pointing that out is kinda redundant.
    You also forgot to mention Shocking Grap's primary use, which is tazing an enemy caster's balls while shouting "Counterspell THIS!".
    And maybe get rid of that pretend drawing hand, it's really obnoxious and distracting.

    • @ChancesSpellbook
      @ChancesSpellbook  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for the criticism, I'll definitely remedy the "Melee VS AC" in future videos. Sadly I can't really do anything about the hand at the moment.
