John Deere 870G Excavator Loading 40 ton rock truck, deep cut

  • Some very hard clay/shale about 2-3m above bedrock in a subdivision around Central Alberta. This is being used as fill to level a site, excess topsoil will fill the hole back in.
Things to note that could be done to improve production:
    - Not loading 90 degrees so there is less swinging
    - Having a serraded cutting edge (or digging teeth) so the material breaks up easier to fill the bucket quicker, and with more material.
This is the last cut down, and it would not be safe to have the trucks go down this cut, so the cut is full depth (to bedrock refusal).
The reason there is not a different edge on the bucket is due to the fact that 95% of the material in Central Alberta does not require it, and a new edge is being custom made. ETA puts it at a month. Digging teeth are available on the smaller digging bucket, but production would be much less with the smaller bucket.
Not 100% on the size of the bucket, but I believe it is 8 cubic yards.

Hitachi and John Deere made the exact same machine until recently (they just canceled their agreement). The only difference between the machines is the engine.

the bucket is not for rock

There is no rock in that material. It's a very stiff clay. We would have preferred a serrated cutting edge, and did have to switch to a smaller digging bucket in some areas.

@@tomcander3669 We do see companies put digging teeth on buckets down around Calgary. But most of our work involves softer clays or topsoils. Even these larger machines need to be doing the 'cleanup' work in areas where you can't put a dozer to touch it up behind them. In hard soils you are 100% correct.
