Ok here is a few tips from a swedish man used to snow. 1. Get winter tires, a 2wd car with winter tiers will perform better than a 4wd without. 2. Stay at home if your car doesn't have winter tiers, there is a reson they are mandatory during the winter here in Sweden. 3. If you are about to slid in to something release the break and turn, your car will turn better when the wheels aren't locking upp. 4. Slow down, think about how much longer it takes to stop.

As others have said, neither 4WD nor AWD will save you if you don't have the right tyres for the conditions. I currently drive an old Octavia with all season tyres and that's a reasonable compromise. Attempting to drive in snow with standard tyres is a complete waste of time and could turn out to be very expensive for obvious reasons.

I own a VW Up GTI, I live on a hill that's quite but not really steep, was covered in snow a few years ago, I was debating whether or not to try getting up it, maybe it was more snowy than icy but still there's a very sharp bend near bottom of the hill, a Sainsbury's delivery van couldn't make it up/round it, his wheels just spun with no grip, but my Up, on low profile Goodyear efficient grip summer tyres, got me not just round that bend but all the way up that hill, all be it with a bit of wheelspin at times especially toward the top where the snow got thicker, I even had to come to almost a stop, into first gear, but got going again, didn't get stuck until outside my house! 😄
Although I will say I didn't even attempt coming down the hill because I had already tried that a few weeks before, before turning into my street, managed to brake without skidding but as soon as I turned the wheel, just lost grip & nearly ended up in a neighbours garden, would rather chance of up it, than down it.

theyre not equipped for this. low to the ground little fwd ecoboxes, or the ones who can afford it a rwd bmw. all season tires. manual transmission that keeps stalling. and nobody is trained for it. no recovery gear, they don't teach you when you learn to drive, etc. some places, people wait for the snow, just so they can go anywhere and do anything if you know how. even simple cat litter under the wheels can do wonders if you're stuck. whats obvious in these videos...if you live in UK, and it snows, ride a bicycle

Given how rare these conditions are, asset of tyre chains would be a good investment. They are not expensive, and they last for decades.

For all those that didn't know this, your normal summer tyres are useless under 7°c. Spinning them won't help warm them either.

I used to put on snow tires in the winter when I lived in a place they got snow. Don't have to do that any longer.

That freelander driver was the issue. Not the car. I've taken my freelander 2 offroading in the ice and snow and it performed great

What tyres? Grip comes from the tyres not the drive system. My dad uses to have a discovery, he fitted the cheapest tyres and it was awful on snow and ice despite the 4x4 drive system.

Did I just see people riding bicycles in the snow? I think I did. Well, never seen that here in Seattle. Heh
