Tip: I would add in a general price point when listing the name of each wine on the screen. It will help your viewers figure out right away if they should look further into that particular wine or not. We're all sensitive to a certain price point.
Otherwise, I'm glad I've discovered your channel. I wish you and your loved ones a happy and healthy 2023.

Try and pick one up sooner rather than later. Here, in the U.K, it's becoming quite tricky. Expensive cases in bond only. I have to say that if you like that style you both need to get a Valdespino Toneless. It's rare but released annually and is completely exceptional. To my mind it's way more complex than even the stunning Toro Albala 1946.

Merry Christmas JJ! The best wine advice this year was as a result of finding your channel on TH-cam. You have been responsible for me returning to my roots in terms of wine appreciation and the rewards of patience in the cellar. Although in recent years I have referred to my cellar as an economic indicator, you have inspired me to hold it in higher regard. Your cellar defender theme was important to me this year. I have also been inspired to learn more about what I am drinking, although my wife says I remember more about the wine we had than the occasion we were celebrating. I have to say that your fashion influence has yet to bloom in my life. Unlike Diane Keaton, you choose to wear turtle necks when it's warranted. I have also been seeking out your Andy Capp hat which I noticed you wearing this year when you were at the beach. I am tempted to ask whether one of your relatives was a skin specialist. I hope you keep up the good work paying it forward in 2023. Your descriptors are brilliant and inspired and although I may not come up with the same ones as you, I content myself that my own descriptions prompt me to seek out/or avoid similar wines in the future. Have a safe and happy holiday and I will see you on the other side of New Years!

Thanks very much, Craig! Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you! Appreciate the thoughtful feedback. Aging wine can be so rewarding. Very glad to hear you are returning to that approach. I’ll be recording my top ten video for Saturday at the beach today, so great timing there! No skin specialists in the family - just vigilant with the moisturizer. 😂 Hope you enjoy some nice wines to close out the year! 👍🍷

Any one of these wines would be most people’s number one! Impressive!
For me, thinking back, three come to mind. First, the 2014 Brewer-Clifton 3-D Vineyard Pinot Noir. Second, the 2015 Tablas Creek Esprit de Tablas Blanc. Third, Andre Brunel’s 2016 Les Cailloux Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc. I guess white Rhônes with a few years on them were hitting me this year.
Honorable mentions to Diatom’s 2020 Chardonnay (amazing value) and an impulse buy from Costco, the 2018 Tarrawatta Shiraz from Eden Valley which reopened my eyes to Australian reds (it’s not that it was the greatest wine, but it showed me so much more than the Shiraz I moved away from over a decade ago).

Fantastic list. Every one of them right up my street. I managed to get a bottle of the Toro Albala 1946 a few years ago and have consumed the little phial but saving the bottle for goodness knows what reason. I managed to visit Toro Albala this past Easter. It's located in a rather unattractive spot in Aguilar de la Frontera although the Bodega itself is fantastic as are the grounds its located in. Very old PX can develop rancio notes and most people, even experienced wine folk, will never taste stuff like this. Very old sherries are in a league of their own but I would highly recommend the Valdespino Toneless. It's an ancient Muscatel but so old (some say up to100 years in the solera) that it's incredible how vibrant it is.
Looking forward to the Top 10. Wishing you a Happy New Year. WT

@@AttorneySomm It really is an interesting area. Most people when they talk about sherry automatically think of the 'Sherry Triangle' on the coast of the Cadiz region (which is a spectacular region). The wines from Monilla-Moriles in the Cordoba region are every bit as interesting and the best ones the equal of their famous 'Sherry' counterparts. They can't call it sherry and all of the wines are made with the Pedro Ximenez grape. I'm sure you know all of that but the region is really worth visiting, especially with your own transport.
The big three bodegas are Alvear, which have an exceptional family history worth digging in to. Perez Barquero, who produce the most incredible value 25 year Amontillado on the planet (92-94 depending on your taste, for under $20 at the bodega). Their sherry vinegar is also the best I've ever tasted - stunning. Third are Toro Albala.
The Cordoba region is also the home of some of the best olive oil in Spain which is grown in a region known as the Subbetica which is very scenic and includes some real treasure such as Priego de Cordoba. Cordoba itself is just a 30 minute drive from Montilla and it's a contender for my favourite Andalusian city. Don't ask for a sherry in the region unless you want a dirty look. Request a fino, amontillado, etc because you will be served a Montilla wine.
I've travelled all over Spain and love everywhere but Andalusia is a magical place. Its historic poverty (it's still poor) and tragedy in the Civil War has morphed into a very special region today. I'm contemplating writing a book about it. Give me a shout if you ever decide to visit. WT

@@welshtoro3256 Thank you! That definitely sounds like a terrific place to visit. Appreciate the insights. That does have the makings of a great book as well. My next Spain trip will fill in some gaps for me - Andalusia, Ribera del Duero and Galicia. Hoping to pull that off in the next 2 years.

    • @welshtoro3256
      @welshtoro3256 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@AttorneySomm All good stuff John. My wife's family come from Valladolid, the capital of Castile and the Ribera region. So many classic bodegas all beside the River Duero. A stunning region as it was the frontier in the 'Reconquista' of 'Spain' and has spectacular castles, churches and cathedrals all over the place. The Castilian food is meaty and perfect with a good Ribera. Galicia is another wonderful region with great wine and food, especially seafood.
Academics continue to debate what is 'Spain'. The more I'm familiarised with it the more I think it is a regional conglomeration. The same is true of Italy and France. They all have a common language but in Spain it's just about held together. All of the regions you want to visit are so different that they are an entity in themselves. I'd holiday in each one at a time without mixing. There's a lot to experience.

There are a variety of ways. I’ve been collecting for 15 years. We also have a great group of generous, like-minded collectors here. We organize tastings around themes and each contribute bottles of money to acquire wines for the tastings. Several were at restaurants. Some are from winery visits or other events put on by the producers.

Just wondering. For some of the Spanish and Italian wines that you show. I use cellar tracker to find it and to buy. However, they do not always pop up on the search bars the way you spell it on your video. For example. The 1946 toro albala is only showing white wine. And I am wondering if a word is off a little bit. That being said. For the Spanish and Italian wines. Would you be so kind as to double check the wording of their names through cellar tracker ahead of time so people like myself can find it and buy it later.

You seem to be very deep into red wines, I was wondering were all the great white wines of this world (Riesling, white Burgundy, Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner) got left behind. I personally think, that whites are nowadays way better value per dollar/euro compared to reds, because of price inflation in Bordeaux, Burgundy, Supertuscans got so bad. But maybe I am wrong and your TOP10 consists mainly of great white wines. My personal Top Wine in 2022 was actually a white from the Saar/Mosel: 2021 Weingut Stefan Müller Niedermenniger Sonnenberg Riesling Spätlese Alte Reben
