Don't avoid "touristy" places in Cape Town. They are world-renowned for a reason and you will find just as many locals there as tourists. Capetonians enjoy climbing their mountains, dining at the Waterfront or MOJO market, exploring the many craft and food markets, etc. There are also many great vegetarian restaurants in Cape Town
You will see a difference from wealth to poverty for two reasons, CT is actually very small compared to JHB it only has 4 main high ways very little land mass, stuck between sea and the ocean and people take any spare land to set up informal dwelling as they came from other provinces looking for work, as close to the city as possible. Most of the people living in informal settlements are actually not from Cape Town. You can test my theory next time in conversation with a brother or sister ask them were they come from. If its not upper Africa its nothern, eastern cape. Different province.
Joburg has a lot more people who aren't originally from here. The city is famous for the gold rush back in the day and many came from other provinces and countries looking to work in the mines. To this day, we still have a lot of of people who aren't from here who settle for work opportunities.

If you're expecting that open friendly, super energetic Joburg vibe you're going to be disappointed. I would recommend that you enjoy places and nature over there, don't focus too much on the people, they will make your visit unpleasant. You could eat and stay well for 50 to $60 a day... My family has been stuck in love here here since the VOC moved us here with their ships in the 1600s... we are literally still in the same valley. The neighbourhood you were in is one of those borderline ones, where most people are great, but there are a few shady folks, so people have their guard up... But people are approachable, just say hi (we do that here). I have a house nearby, so I recognised the street where you walked.
Spar is actually rated the most expensive grocery store in South Africa. I know I always thought Woolworths was expensive, but they do have affordable items.
I'm a Joburger and visited Cape Town a year ago. We stayed at Observatory. Very nice and Boho. My kind of vibe and we could see the very famous Groote Schuur hospital from our apartment window. Try that next time. And we do Bolt more than Uber in Mzansi. And try the red City Bus...I love how the voice guide tells the true story of how C.T is, especially the land grab from the indigenous people
South Africa is the most unequal country in the world. Some parts of the country showcase grotesque levels of wealth alongside dire poverty. Hopefully, one day there will be less poverty and inequality. That said, South Africa is an amazing country to visit for everyone-whether from the developed or developing world-because it exhibits both, along with our splendid natural beauty and friendly people
no need to bring racism into it they probably are just rude people and you get rude people amongst ALL races. I am not from Cape Town but when i was there i found the people very friendly
@@nleddie hmmm if racism is the FIRST thing on your mind then maybe YOU are the racist. Just a thought 🤔. I mean when people are rude around me my first thought is not that they are racist it's "dang they are rude"
What you said about the taxis make sense. Better to be safe than sorry. As for the duplicate addresses. Earlier those where separate towns in the earlier years. But the city expanded so smaller towns became larger cities. That why you would find something like that. I've also lived in cities where it used to be one street. But throughout the years they bought out and built something else in the middle of it. So the street would end and then continue somewhere else. Rustenburg comes to mind here.
You can't get carrot juice at the normal grocery shops. You'll have to go to a Housewife's market (a shop that only sells fruits and vegetables) if you want to find that. Or you can try Food Lovers Market, you might find carrot juice there as well.
Vox did a video on TH-cam called "Why South Africa is still so segregated". There's literally one road that divides the affluent and impoverished communities in Cape Town. It was designed that way decades ago by the Apartheid government to keep the poor poor
Hey Eddie, unfortunately our country has had a huge influx of foreigners from the rest of Africa and because they arrive looking for work, they build themselves a small shack to live in. So, so far you haven't seen Cape Town. You have to go into the city to really experience it. Hope you get to see some of the main touristy places before you leave. Enjoy!!
If you are still going to traveling around South Africa try going to Durban next then East London. To a better picture of South Africa and it's diversity.
You’re spot on on your analysis of Cape Town. It is a very beautiful city, however the disparities in wealth are right in your face. This is where you find the poorest of the poor living right across dollar millionaires, and it’s a stark reminder of how unequal this country really is. I’m a Jo’burg guy, who has visited Cape Town many times, and I’ve always felt like Cape Town’s racism is just on another level. You’ll get judged a lot, based on the colour of your skin, and I have found that it irks a lot of these racists that Joburgers just know how to put them in their place. We are more open and will talk when something is not right. Apart from that, Cape Town is a real beauty - I’d even go as far as saying the most beautiful coastal city in the world. Unpredictable weather, but an amazing holiday destination!
I much prefer Cape Town to Jo’Burg. I come here from California every year. I live Cape Town and especially Stellenbosch. My husband got his undergraduate degree at the university of Stellenbosch. It is a beautiful town! !
I am not a Capetonian, but from visiting, I realised that the mountain is almost a character or a person. It is an unescapable presence. There is more than one way to enjoy Table Mountain apart from going up with the Cable Car. There are numerous walks and cycle paths that are used by locals. It gets you out in the open and up close and personal to the natural beauty of the place - and it's probably not going to cost you an arm and a leg.
The poverty in Cape Town is in your face because it's the first thing you see after landing. Which I appreciate because it addresses the transparency a visitor deserves. You have to pass Nyanga, Manenberg and Langa before your reach the City Centre.
Cape Town will undoubtedly defend itself fiercely, as it always does. However, having lived in Joburg, Durban, and Cape Town for extended periods, I would suggest you have captured the differences in the mood and vibe very well. Durban and Johannesburg are far more integrated and equal societies, and because of that, they are far more friendly and laid-back. Joburg in particular is a cultural melting pot like no other in this country. All our ancestors went there seeking fortune during the gold rush. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Cape Town, make no mistake, but there are times and places where people deliberately make you feel like you don't belong. I even got called out for having a Durban accent once, which is not a big issue, but it does tell you something that fellow South Africans would pick up on that. And then the impoverished areas in Durban and Joburg are nowhere near as scary as the Cape Flats. I once got on a train to the Cape Flats by mistake and felt like I could meet my maker at any minute.
I was warned very many times about Cape flats. I don't know where it is and have no intention to find out. In your opinion why are people in Cape Town so stuck up?
@@nleddie I couldn't possibly tell you mate, but they spend a lot of time and energy trying to distinguish themselves from the rest of South Africa. A LOT. There is even a movement trying to get Cape Independence. I suspect a referendum vote would ultimately fail, but I cannot say I am 100% sure. LOL You just never know with the Western Cape. But I am not knocking them. I liked Cape Town, even though everything there is wildly overpriced. The property prices, owning or renting, are total madness.
@@nleddie They're arrogant and think their much better than the rest of S.A. You'll notice that they won't take your critism of their beloved city well, instead they'll try and drag Joburg into it and tell you how Joburg is far worse than CPT. Been to Durban and found the atmosphere and people warm compared to those in CPT (I just didn't like the humid weather unfortunately), but the people made up for it.
@@nleddie because Cape Town is considered the best run of the major cities in South Africa and one of the few that doesn't vote blindly in the political elections. The people are very opinionated. Ironically you said you dont want to do the touristy part of Cape Town. Well thats what Cape Town is for majority of the people who arent struggling. Going on hikes, the beaches, the food, the nightlife. Joburg is huge compared to Cape Town, ocean on both sides and a mountain in the middle there isnt land to build at a close distance to the City hubs. If you carried on the highway from the airport for 5-10 mins, you would find a completely different class of people and with it the moods are completely different. The poverty in Joburg is bad but you didnt see it, due its size btw you found the Cape Flats with your first Uber
Lol Bro..Where the Uber took you first by mistake is a notorious area you definitely dont want to be, glad it was just a mistake, yassis!! Welcome to the Mother city though and enjoy Cape Town, give it a fair chance man the people and the vibes are good here, enjoy!!
Hey Eddie, Welcome the South Africa! If you are looking at exploring a few places in South Africa, make a tour through the Garden Route which is about 4 hours away from Cape Town. It starts in the town of Mossel Bay, and ends in Stormsrivier. All of the towns along this route are epic with the most beautiful landscapes. This route will take you through Mossel Bay, George (where I live), Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, and finally Stormsrivier. You can drive the whole Gardenroute in about 4 hours if you don't stop anywhere. If you ever decide to make a stop here, hit me up. Would be my pleasure showing you around.
love your content my brother, i wish i was a digital Nomad just like you, but please next time put the R(rand) before the numbers, of cause unless you are doing it on purpose
You mentioned about WiFi availability in countries and shows their growth. For us that is an odd statement, when we were in New York City 2 years ago we battled with WiFi. At Juniors restaurant, they didn’t have at all!!
Johannesburg is a cosmopolitan city... Hence you will never find anyone from Johannesburg who is not multilingual, and that's not the case with other provinces...All the people who can speak all Sa languages r from JHB... Other provinces are not so integrated. Capetown is also well know for it's racism... There are white people/organizations calling for Wc to be declared an independent state.
In the last polls there's was a strong majority for western cape independence in all racial groups, the DA is a white led party but the coloureds mainly vote with the Afrikaners
Bless you for your pronunciation of koeksister 😄 and yeah babtmy aquelle is numbah 1. And yeah capetonians are less friendly comlare to joburg but Dude if you are still in cpt and you want affordable uber /private rides let me know.
Welcome fellow traveller! How long will you be in Cape Town? There is a ridiculous amount of stuff to do here for literally no money (if that's your goal). I hope you have a great time here 🙂
Get cakes from a confectionery or bakery if you want something fresh. They bake daily. Spar cakes are not the best, remember to check the expiry date. Woolies Tiramisu Gateau cake is my favourite by far, it is family size though.
you staying on the outskirts in the lower middle class afrikaans areas. I don't know why you aren't staying in the southern suburbs or the CBD/sea point and gardens area
I don't know to be honest about the disparity of wealth. Maybe it's because most people who come through from other countries come to Cape Town for the job opportunities, and not so much to Johburg. We have a terrible border control so a lot of people come through with no job, no money etc, and have to just settle anywhere to live and those areas grow to become townships. Obviously that's not to say that all townships are foreigners, but the government definitely can't keep up with the influx of people compared to the recources and speed to build housing. Especially since the houses are often also built with solar panel geysers and jojo tanks
Joburg has always accommodated people searching for work opportunities from all over SA as well other African countries for the longest time, all the way back to the times of the gold rush, so it's not true that they only come to CPT for work opportunities and "not so much Joburg." Gauteng becomes quite empty during December holidays for this reason.
That because CT is actually very small compared to JHB it only has 4 main high way very little land mass, stuck between sea and the ocean and people take any spare land to set up informal dwelling as they came from other provinces looking for work.
Palm colored people are very different in Cape Town and Pretoria compared to Joburg. It's a beautiful place though. Keep to yourself and enjoy the experience or find easy going, open people to hang out with. A lot of people are also very open minded and fun. Cape Town is the vibiest most laid back city, especially during festive. Ke Dezemba mos 🥳
Agree very different...JHB, PTA and Durban coloured people are innovative out of the box thinkers...unlike Cape town...they cant think further than their nose...they will kll you for a R5...satan's spawns.
Where there is smoke there’s fire is the best advice i can also give, its never let me down. Our street names repeat many times as you move around the country. Its definitely annoying.
Lol... Cape Town is stuck up (The people) and some townships too are stuck up but just like @MosesMatsepane said, it's best you leave the people alone and enjoy your time. You may bump into warm, friendly people and you'll have the time of your life, but just focus on the experience. My city is beautiful ❤
Best advice you can get about Cape Town areas is, there are SAFER areas not safe areas. Like Surrey Estate is safer than Athlone but its not safe because anything can happen to you. So always scan your surroundings and make sure you keep your belongings in your bag or pockets and not walk around flaunting it. There are desperate people out there not matter how big and strong you are that desperate person will find a way to get that phone or wallet.
Look the big issue is that you will find a job in the big city but it is crazy expensive to live in Cape Town... That results in the increase in slums...
You didn’t explore enough around joburg. Poverty is just as bad. The poverty in Cape Town is just more visible. next to highways Etc, where as in joburg tourists, middle class people and the wealthy don’t really have to travel close to those kinda neighborhoods. You’re right about Cape Town energy and the people. It’s not easy to get into a “clique”. Definitely more open people in other areas of South Africa. That being said cape is stunning, has great people too and as poor as some areas look, there are some outrageously wealthy areas in and around Cape Town also.
hey Eddie - to put it in perspective we have roughly 5,8million tax payers and roughly 12. 6 million people on welfare - there is probably much more but those are documented. poverty in SA is indemic and a huge problem.
@@nleddiethis is incorrect information you were fed, my brother. No one would deliberately choose to live under such conditions. No one is happy to be there, trust me. If there was a way out, most people would happily take it - hence most of them resort to crime to try and feed their families. The worst thing is, people in those areas get the brunt of the crime and other terrible conditions. Lots of socio-economic issues
Not you saying they're speaking German lol. And the people that talked about you probably were shocked or exited to see an American in South Africa, as we see a ton of American related things on T.V and even me, if I saw an American I would really be surprised. I like the feeling I get in spar. It is nice and bright inside. Wool worth is very dark and serious
@nleddie I agree with you on that one 👍🏽
Everything okay over there
By the way - there are different classes on Jhb too. The areas you were in are more upmarket.
That said, South Africa is an amazing country to visit for everyone-whether from the developed or developing world-because it exhibits both, along with our splendid natural beauty and friendly people
Similar to los Angeles
no need to bring racism into it they probably are just rude people and you get rude people amongst ALL races. I am not from Cape Town but when i was there i found the people very friendly
Capetonians are very friendly. My friends from Joburg appreciates that about Cape Town locals, especially in tshisa nyama places in the location.
I just say what is on my mind and comment on what I see.
Yes, I’m Black and everyone was super cool to me.
Lol that is wild. But yeah now I'm knowing triple check the address
You can't get carrot juice at the normal grocery shops. You'll have to go to a Housewife's market (a shop that only sells fruits and vegetables) if you want to find that. Or you can try Food Lovers Market, you might find carrot juice there as well.
I had purchased carrot juice at a hyper checkers in Joburg.
Thanks for Intel
Vox did a video on TH-cam called "Why South Africa is still so segregated". There's literally one road that divides the affluent and impoverished communities in Cape Town. It was designed that way decades ago by the Apartheid government to keep the poor poor
I have a lot to learn about apartheid
@@nleddie You might want to go to the Apartheid museum if you ever come back to Joburg then.
Thank you for this information!!! Awesome
25:08 those people were surprised that you have an expensive gaget. They are not generally open towards us. Unlike those on JHB. Theres still mistrust
Intersting.
Thanks for the suggestion.
The poverty in Joburg is bad but you didnt see it, due its size
btw you found the Cape Flats with your first Uber
Lol Bro..Where the Uber took you first by mistake is a notorious area you definitely dont want to be, glad it was just a mistake, yassis!! Welcome to the Mother city though and enjoy Cape Town, give it a fair chance man the people and the vibes are good here, enjoy!!
For sure man I was happy that was not my area.
Spar cake are amazing I won't lie
Thanks for looking into it I just was looking into it for school purposes.
You like cape town?
Consider going to East London, Port Elizabeth and Durban.
6:45 The sun goes down later in summer
Man, I wish I could do the same for your country, I've always wanted to tour America. The cost would probably be high, so that i can't afford
You can make it happpen. There is no shortage of money in this world. Only a shortage of imagination of how to collect your share.
Just work harder, then you will afford.
love your content my brother, i wish i was a digital Nomad just like you, but please next time put the R(rand) before the numbers, of cause unless you are doing it on purpose

Bro. Come to Richards Bay, hit me up. Will show you around. Its a small city on the east coast. Not too far from Durban
Love your channel.would love to show u the real South Africa when u back in jhb
What is the real SA?
Its the people, not just the scenery.
Stoney is a South African drink. A lot of products you see in Southern Africa imported from South African
Poverty disparity is everywhere in South Africa, Depending on where you are in JHB you will find a lot of huge informal poor settlements
When you go back to Johannesburg pls visit Santon and mall of Africa
Vlogs coming
Bless you for your pronunciation of koeksister 😄 and yeah babtmy aquelle is numbah 1. And yeah capetonians are less friendly comlare to joburg but Dude if you are still in cpt and you want affordable uber /private rides let me know.
Cape Town people are as cold as their weather and ocean. Also, their proximity to Europeans affects their warmth.
I live in Capetown and i have to agree 😆
i have the same experience of gauteng.. literally 10 years i left 3 months ago. I feel like i am in heaven
The times we live in are difficult guys. We are facing challenges of all kinds hence friendliness, the spirit of ubuntu is becoming scarce.

Welcome fellow traveller! How long will you be in Cape Town? There is a ridiculous amount of stuff to do here for literally no money (if that's your goal). I hope you have a great time here 🙂
...we call those shack communities Squatter Camps
O good to know
If you did not see poverty in Joburg, you did not really travel in Joburg.
The level is different in Cape Town. I mean HIGH levels. Folks bathing in the ocean.
@@nleddiepoverty in Cape Town is seemingly more on your face more than Joburg. Almost like u must c the inequality immediately
Get cakes from a confectionery or bakery if you want something fresh. They bake daily. Spar cakes are not the best, remember to check the expiry date. Woolies Tiramisu Gateau cake is my favourite by far, it is family size though.
Did you reupload this video? I could've sworn I watched it more than a day ago
First time it was taken down
You should hike Table Mountain or Lions Head
you staying on the outskirts in the lower middle class afrikaans areas. I don't know why you aren't staying in the southern suburbs or the CBD/sea point and gardens area
What camera did you use?
Osmo action 4
Top notch content, keep em coming 🎉
Appreciate you.
Energy is different for sure
There is too much poverty in Cape town and its right infront of your eyes. There is poverty in joburg but its not slam bang on your face.
That was my first impression. It is almost too much.
That because CT is actually very small compared to JHB it only has 4 main high way very little land mass, stuck between sea and the ocean and people take any spare land to set up informal dwelling as they came from other provinces looking for work.
If the ANC were to be in charge in Cape Town, poverty would have been swepped under the carpet…now it’s an issue because DA runs the show.🙄
Palm colored people are very different in Cape Town and Pretoria compared to Joburg.
I found some really nice people in Cape Town as well. More difficult but they are there
Where there is smoke there’s fire is the best advice i can also give, its never let me down.
Our street names repeat many times as you move around the country. Its definitely annoying.
Yeah that was a real surprise to me. I feel like the city planning in Joburg is above that in Cape.
Lol... Cape Town is stuck up (The people) and some townships too are stuck up but just like @MosesMatsepane said, it's best you leave the people alone and enjoy your time. You may bump into warm, friendly people and you'll have the time of your life, but just focus on the experience. My city is beautiful ❤
For sure I have met some very kind people in cape town. I have found once they see you again and again they start to open up.
Anger issues ,,they always think ppl are attacking or stealing .😅😅😅😅that's cpt ppl peace is not unto them
What song is that playing at the beginning of the video?
I love your content, wish you could upload at least 2 videos.🙈
I try to upload 2x a week.
Interesting.
Got you thanks for more detailed breakdown
25:07 I was just about to ask 😂
Say please when you order, it's good manners
My brother you are not far from my house, I see you are in Tableview.
Yes in table view
hey Eddie - to put it in perspective we have roughly 5,8million tax payers and roughly 12. 6 million people on welfare - there is probably much more but those are documented. poverty in SA is indemic and a huge problem.
Interesting. I had heard many people in the tin houses choose to live there. That the government offered loans and they refused
@nleddie that would be correct! It's a life they choose. We even had a member of our parliament living in these shacks!
