Then he refused to play with the n16, stormed out of the stadium shouting that Pele, Maradona and Eusébio were the 10 and not 16. Because of that a young player that had been drinking in the boxes thinking he wouldn't be able to play was called up to fill for him. Ended up to play half drunk at the end of the game. That was the first ever game of Rio Ferdinand.

One thing you may not know.. Futre is a fantastic storyteller.. and with humor.. He has that kind of personality that grabs everybody's atention.. Even those who don't like football can be found listening him and his fantastic stories about football... and by the way.. i'm from Sporting, and i was a kid when he played for us, and yes, it was amazing to see him play.. and it was so hard to see him play for Porto... we found him, we embraced him, we loved him, but we lost him too soon.. after him, we had Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo (among many many others great players) but we never emotionally recovered from that lost.. Quaresma is another that we lost at the start of his rising, Nani is another.. Simão Sabrosa is another.. Frank Rijkaard (from ajax) was another.. And the list is long.. very long ... We had so many world-known stars..

You can actually see how much of his game he based on Maradona (many of his movements / dives / celebrations are pure Diego). It does seem that he had a crazy football IQ, very fast and skilled but sadly a bit too weak genetically (and yes, he took some REALLY bad challenges!) for the top flight game.

that's a good change in football that often gets overlooked. Some of the tackles in the 80's/90's were criminal and almost never were punished accordingly. This also made stuff like what happened to Futre possible, cutting careers for amazing players short and effectively diluting the game.

He's probably a top 5 (or around that player) for our country. He was definitely one of the best players in the world when he played for Porto and for Atletico Madrid. The portuguese national team wasn't the best from all our generations and together with the injury he had, his career got overlooked and disrespected. I'd say Ronaldo, Figo, Eusébio are ahead of him in my country but he's in that conversation with Rui Costa, Bernardo Silva, Pepe or Moutinho, for me personally.

The greatest Portuguese player of his generation. He was Figo's idol, as well as the idol of many of the "golden generation" players that followed him in the 90's. He was the first proverbial "Portuguese winger", a template many Portuguese players would follow, including Figo, and later Cristiano Ronaldo. First a winger, then midfield or centre-forward.

That is wrong. Portugal always had amazing wingers, seems like that's the position we develop the best talent. José Augusto and Simões were world class in the 60's, and Chalana in the late 70's was the man who made Futre kneel , as he was his Idol. Too bad there is almost 0 videos on the first 2, seeing as Eusébio and Coluna were the Best players in Benfica at the time and all lights were in them, and very few of Chalana, aside from his brilliant euro 84 campaign. I saw Futre playing in in the end of his carreer, his knee was a problem but the cocaine, poor career choises and the horrible takles of the time made his desteny. Undoubtedly a magnificent talent with lots of dribling, speed and power shots.

Eu jogava nos infantis do Sporting e ia 2 horas mais cedo so para ver Futre treinar nos juniores, eu e muitos dos meus colegas de equipa.

I grew up watching both play. Both were cult heroes of mine. Just missed Futres time in Portugal + first couple of seasons at Letti(so arguably missed his best time). I started watch La Liga from 89/90 onwards. My memory is that his decline had started by then(early/mid 20s ... injuries, not looking after himself/smoking etc). He was still World class at times(copa etc) but was already a bit of a forgotten legend outside of La Liga & Portugal. When he moved to West Ham I remember telling people what a great player he was(when on form), & then been very disappointed in his time there.
Rui Costa was consistently excellent. I loved him at Fiorentina. I was actually disappointed he moved to Milan as Fiorentina also had that cult status. However the move to Milan, arguably a bigger club, actually made him even better.
They were different styles of players/different positions so Ive never ever thought of comparing them before, or picking one over the other. TBH I hate doing that with any players. Futre was a better dribbler/more dynamic/possibly had a higher peak etc but Costa was pure class & had longevity. Such an elegant player. If I HAD to pick one Id just go for Costa coz he was always brilliant & seemed to get better and better with age.. Both were World Class on their day tho.
Gullit was also an unreal athlete and player. Plus a total icon as well. His Ballon Dor win does seem very suspicious that season but overall he was right up there with the very very best of his generation.
Three great players & three legends of the game.
