SUMP FISH!!! ••• Underwater look at the feral fish in our system

  • Sump Fish are what we call the feral fish that live in the gutters and sump of each of the greenhouses. In this video, there's frenzied activity for the first several minutes as they feed on floating pellets. The second half of the video is more calm and the fish are not as crowded.

      @Exquailibur ปีที่แล้ว

      @@goliadfarms7029 Definitely a species that is unlikely to go anywhere anytime soon, here they dont even have many predators since the only snake species are too small to eat adults. Luckily they dont seem to do well in ephemeral ponds or the cold fast moving waterways with low vegetation which are our dominant habitats, but the oxbow lakes, permanent wetlands, and slow moving waterways with high vegetation are dominated by them and the native frog species that normally fills that niche is extremely rare these days. Only the frogs that dont have to compete with them are still doing well.

    I realize you were feeding, but thats still an impressive density of fish. No wonder your green house is so green -lots of plant food! Do you ever have to do any maintenance to cut back on mulm or does you system self-regulate efficiently enough?

    • @goliadfarms7029
      @goliadfarms7029  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The sump fish have a surprisingly high population. We do keep as many and 140 adult cichlids in 55-gallon vats. The flow of water through the system provides adequate aeration and oxygen.
      There is almost no mulm in the sumps and floor gutters. There are enough fish to keep it from accumulating. I suppose all the small critters in the systems break it down completely. Mulm does accumulate in 55-gallon, 110-gallon, and 300-gallon vats but not much in 55-gallon vats with 50-100 adult cichlids. We don't remove mulm from the 300-gallon vats; too much labor, but it rarely builds up to more than 2". A large pleco or two in the 300-gallon vats, as well as the cichlids, seem to keep the mulm down. Mulm does accumulate in 55-gallon vats that don't have a lot of adult cichlids. When we process those vats, we harvest the mulm using 10" brine shrimp nets. That mulm goes onto our compost piles for litter worms to convert to rich soil. The only thing that accumulates in the bottom of the sumps is snail shells but even those break down over time.

      Since we lost 85% of our inventoried fish in the vats in the Texas Winter Storm, I suspect a similar percentage of sump fish perished too. Because the water recirculates, the water temperature was the same in the vats, floor gutters, and sumps. Our sumps are below ground (about four feet deep), but most of the water is in vats and floor gutters that are above ground. I am researching geothermal as a heating source.

      I just learned something! I didn't know I could click on the time stamp and go immediately to that point in the video. Thank you!
      That is likely a male Pseudotropheus elongatus although some hybrids look remarkably similar to species. That's not surprising since the 600+ Lake Malawi cichlids arose primarily through hybridization. We lost all the P. elongatus we had in vats. I need to get more breeding stock. Since that fish could be a hybrid, we can't use it for breeding P. elongatus.

      @goliadfarms7029  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a Texas Convict, F1 hybrid of Texas Cichlid and Convict Cichlid. One of our granddaughters kept a juvenile Texas cichlid when we were collecting at nearby Coleto Creek. It grew up to be a lonely male, so I gave it a nice female Convict. They had two large spawns before she went to fishy heaven. I moved the offspring into vats and some escaped. So far, I haven't been able to get F2s so I suspect the F1s are sterile.

      @Goliad Farms They look really similar to a male Con that I got ~8 years ago when working at Petco. He grew up to be, what I consider, LARGE by Con standards. All fins had a beautiful blue bordering. He was also the first Con I really saw get a nuchal hump. After a few years he passed, but I gave all his remaining offspring to a buddy to go with his Vieja, Firemouth, JD's...and those offspring got even larger than dad. Wish I had the space for more right now, but I slimmed down to FL gulf native fish. (Elassoma sp, Fundulus chrysotus, Lucania goodei, Etheostoma sp)

      I'm thinking of how we can do that. One thought is that I scoop out a net of fish, remove any I want to keep as breeders, sort through the remainders, pick a half dozen of the best (probably all males), and offer that "random" scoop. I've also thought of how we might house and offer individual fish. That requires a lot more marketing than we've done in the past. My preference would be to have a couple of farm fish festivals a year during which we'd harvest the sumps and offer the fish to the attendees. Is anyone interested in traveling to South Texas for a festival. We could also do some collection trips to local waterways.

    @michaelshaw8370 ปีที่แล้ว

    The list of “YES” is both long and varied. Numbers. Diversity. Quality. Some of those fish could easily return into the numbers of brood stock. It is pretty obvious what is keeping the numbers of livebearers at a reasonable level. The sump dwellers both add slightly to the mulm. Their presence also stirs it up assisting in breaking it down and preventing areas of build up/ blockage of the sumps. Act as a part of a multi layer check and balance controlling the numbers of insect larvae in the sumps also keeps down the adult pests. Mosquitos Gnats ect. Helps to maintain herd immunity to many combinations of minor health issues. Any predator be they snakes rats whatever would most likely target the low hanging fruit in the sump rather than make the extra effort of attacking valuable breeding stock in the vats. With the added bonus of the boys running around the fish rooms will deter and distract most vermin by chasing out and probably chewing on any rat, raccoon, possum, looking for free food before they do too much damage. They provide entertainment and distraction for yourself and other staff. With that extra huge bonus of the good work from the sump dwellers saves the extra time and work that otherwise would have been spent on a percentage of the hours maintaining the sumps. Rather than working on the breeding, raising, selling and shipping fish to customer base. Time is as always a resource you cannot squander. The actions of all types of fish in the sumps from livebearers to the big plecos. All play their part. After the storms that caused such massive damage and losses the survivors in the sumps helped to restart some of your lost brood stock.

      They are feral in the sense that we no longer have control over their breeding and survival. The greenhouses constitute their own ecosystems. There are many species in the systems that we didn't introduce, such as Diamondback Water Snakes, Texas Ribbon Snakes, Bullfrogs, four species of Tree Frogs, Texas toads, etc. And, that's not mentioning all the plants, insects, arachnids, , mollusks, and annelids that have colonized the greenhouses.
