    Hey John! My name is Ben from Ct. My hat is off to you, for all the GREAT videos on my favorite car! My 1997 XK8 Coupe is giving me window problems after I replaced the Alternator. The window goes down on entry. Drivers side Left. I tried to reset it. No go! Any ideas you may have my man are sure welcome! Been driving an XK8 Coupe about 18 years. Very complex machine. Can be quite fickle at times, (like now.) . I try to keep my chin up, people tell me SELL it. I like the car, and the styling is timeless! Damian has also been trying to help me. He is a good lad like yourself! LOVE that JAG!!! Nice color! Thanks Again for your dedication to the brand. Great job! Regards, Ben

    Great video again John. Keep them coming. Although not part of the actual five, I was intrigued by the cost of tax and insurance in the UK. Being a Pom myself, I was quite surprised by how expensive it is to tax and insure cars in Australia. I currently pay pretty well double what you do for my Registration and comprehensive insurance. Despite paying a lot for my own insurance, I have to pay an additional compulsory third party insurance (known as the green slip) in order to register my car. Mind you, our fuel is considerably cheaper in Oz, so I suppose that does compensate somewhat. Consumables like oil, filters and tyres seem to be about the same as the UK prices.

    Hey John! Great video as always. Just a note on tires. Some people say well I am never going to drive my Jaguar over 80-90 mph,so I am not going to buy H or V rated tires. However, you as an owner have the responsibility to buy tires that match the OEM specs, because they match the Jaguar’s performance capability.
    Let’s say you buy new tires that are inferior in performance than the OEM spec tires and you sell the car. Let’s say the tires are good for 100 mph. So the new owner takes the car and drives the Jaguar up to 110-120 mph, which may be legal in some European countries. What happens if the inferior tire breaks a belt or blows out, because of the speed, and the occupants gets injured or worse. The previous owner would have responsibility in this matter. Of course someone would say the buyer should have checked the tires speed rating, and he should have, but it doesn’t always happen.

    Those costs sound about right to me. I avoid the P zero tyres though, they are outdated technogy now. Had them on my XK8 when bought and it tramlined somewhat, ditched them for the latest Hankooks and its another world! And a lot cheaper at 120 quid a piece or thereabouts. The Hankooks get good reviews in the most recent autoexpress tests too so worth a look.

    7:00 From what I've learned about Nikisil engines, it tended to be the lower mileage cars that suffered due to the unleaded fuels of the time. Nothing to do with the oil. These days, the quality of unleaded fuel is better and so the Nikisil problems of the past should no longer occur.

  • @severnsea
    @severnsea ปีที่แล้ว

    Good video but I don't agree with your advice on batteries. There is absolutely no need whatsoever to change the battery every 5 years and a good battery will have a 5 year warranty anyway, so is likely to last longer. If they do start to fail then you can generally get a battery test done free at many garages, but there is another way. For under a tenner you can get a USB port that plugs into your 12v socket, and many of them have an LED readout that shows the car's battery voltage. I found this very useful as I was able to tell straight away when my battery started to go - 9 years after it had been fitted.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have done well @severnsea👍
      Im certainly not trying to spend anyone else's money unnecessarily. But I would still say you should budget for batteries if an X100 is your goal. I have about 8 or 9 emails a day telling me about how all manner of problems disappeared immediately after a new battery (or earth lead) was fitted.
      I imagine that genuinely quibble free battery warranties are quite rare. Or everyone would deep cycle their batteries half a dozen times near its 5th birthday and pick up a free replacement.
      I may look into that in fact🤔

    • @-A-lm5xb
      @-A-lm5xb ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ToTheGarage Fair comment, I certainly would agree with budgeting for a replacement but not necessarily changing it unless it's needed. Electrical problems are generally an issue on most cars now if the battery drops below a certain level (watch out for dashcams that have a "wake" function when they get vibration from passing traffic, that killed my last battery), but the X100, 150, 250 seem to be particularly sensitive to quick voltage drops. But unless you start to have those issues I would leave it alone - "if it ain't broke don't fix it".
      Good point about deep cycling, never thought of it to be honest. I've always used Bosch where possible and never had a problem. Bosch advertise a 3 year warranty so whether they have changed it or not, or whether mine was some sort of premium option I'm not sure, but it was fitted by the AA just a few months ago and they definitely specified a 5 year warranty. I know I could have bought a little cheaper but it was quick and convenient, I'd had to call them anyway because of the dashcam battery drain issue.

    So nice to see your beautiful cat again.
    For us, the poor Jag-lovers in So. Cali, there is another big dilemma that you didn't include and as a person who faces it again, right now, may actually part me from my beloved vehicle. So you may ask "What"? and that is what our nice (Not really so) lawmakers have in addition to regular registration as you have there. That is Smog Test, every other year. That is to ensure old cars are not a polluter or air (Tell me if someone on this side of the lake is not fooled enough, say the tricks VW has proven to create upon our Emission control genius!!! (Sad but shameful history that even hurt the not-so-much tender heart of our lawmakers!). The problem is Jaguar engineers then didn't realize that they have incorporated a code in OBD II called P1000 that simply says "Not Ready" and actually does not have any significance in terms of a true problem or an error. Well as you said, the car is very sensitive electronically and mine does reset very often when she is in part for too long. Now... once P1000 appears, it simply won't wipe out, as in my all other (Mostly American) cars do and I want to believe! it has a very precise procedure to get rid of that code which by default turns the "Check Engine" light on and is an instantaneous cause of Smog Test Failure in California, USA, even without running the test, in an otherwise perfect set car engine that is by no means even close to being a polluter...
    I'm due for the test and if this is not going to pass easily this time, sadly but my pussy cat will become a donation to one of the charities! A hurt-breaking end for someone who loves his car but the company's mechanisms aren't smart enough to understand the market or why the hell Jaguar should have a code that means nothing but does the worst damage.
    Well, Time will tell and if you have good advice to get rid of P1000, please share it with me before too late.

    I'm confused about the coolant. I have a 2001 xkr with red coolant in it at the moment it might be WSS M97 B44D . Any advice. Also is there any advise on how to drain all the old coolant?
    As for engine oil I've been using fuchs titan xtr 5w30 synthetic which is very reasonably priced.

    • @Technotranceism
      @Technotranceism ปีที่แล้ว

      Humidity is problematic in almost every vehicle, since they're not perfectly sealed environments. Typical way to help eliminate this problem, is being in a temperature controlled environment like an air conditioned garage, or storage unit. Other ways is to place some damp rid moisture absorber in the vehicle, to help eliminate the moisture associated with humidity.

      If there is no proof that the timing chain tensioners have been replaced, use it as a bargaining chip.
      Its Circa £1500 for an independant garage to do. Good service history and body condition are your main interest. and make sure everything electrical works as some electrical gremlins are hard to trace and expensive to resolve.

    • @h7pubg

      John would know more on this than I do, but it could be your transmission fluid, or A drum failure due to pressure regulator valve. to troubleshoot or prevent, i might recommend getting your fluid flushed and installing an updated pressure regulator valve. pressure slippages on our pre 2002 xk8s can be problematic

      If its purely the noise with no other detrimental effects then it could be as simple as a loose heat shield resonating on or near the exhaust Zane
