Well you know right now its really just a media circus... If these drones cause any harm then the tone will change right away and you'll see a bunch of laws passed against it.
It seems that the activity in NJ (that which really is drone activity) is attributed to large drones and not ones people are complaining about being "security risk" prone such as hobby and public service sized drones. Someone is going to a lot of trouble to be noticed and make drone flying look bad at the same time. NJ drones are hardly "stealth" and hovering over a public area doesn't seem to be "information gathering" unless they are mapping the area at night. Lots of questions here......
@@glynnetolar4423 I had a thought that maybe pilot institute starts a new segment of FOIA requests/investigations and put the FAA's feet to the fire. Whatever those lights are, are well over 400 feet, operating over people, well beyond line of sight, and among many other violations(lets just pull them up on remote ID LOLOLOL). How about FAA moderates what is well within their authority....then report to the public why or why not these flights don't violate their rules. To me its beyond suspicious, and seems like par for the course of of the last several years.
It is interesting that the government is going after DJI, which has things like required Remote ID and no fly zones for safety. By comparison, the drones in New Jersey are most likely drones that people built themselves and deliberately did not include things like remote ID.
The biggest concern I have about the 2025 NDAA language is that our ability as a community to bring to bear lobbying pressure against a ban has been greatly diminished. We don’t have elected representatives in control of the agencies who are supposed to conduct the security assessment in the allotted time period, so we cannot lobby them directly. It appears to me that we have been set up for failure, and are at the mercy of whoever ends up at the helm of whatever agency is involved. Looking at the lineup of candidates, I am not optimistic.
We are not out of the woods yet! I expect there will be several months wasted trying to decide who will take on the project. Then (of course!) there will be funding issues causing further delay. Like Greg said, when did a government agency ever get anything done in one year?
While we certainly need to keep a close eye on the Section 1709 process, I respectfully disagree our engagement with Congress has been diminished. I actually believe the opposite. Here's why. This entire mess has unified this industry like no other event. Even RID NPRM didn't have that effect. We've been brought together, and now have the ability of produce change like we've never had before. We are not at the mercy of the Agency leadership. Congress knows we are now a force to be reckoned with, even if it is a smaller force than most industries. But we do exist now. We will keep an eye on this, and once again rally the troops as needed. And because of this ordeal, we now are able to identify Congressional members who sympathise with our plight. We can very likely engage with them to also exert Congressional pressure on the agency tasked with these tests. As @fez3606 states, we are not out of the woods yet. But I truly believe we have a clear path out and can see the meadow at the edge of the forest. We just need to watch and take care that no one comes in and falls trees that block that path. We are strong enough as an industry to now make a marked difference in D.C.
I feel like if DJI would release SDK’s for new drones they could alleviate a lot of concerns. There’s literally no reason to tether drones to their app only other than data collection that I can think of.
They have a lot of reasons to require the use of a DJI app. Reasons include making the drone replacement program feasible as well as preventing people from bypassing the no fly zone restrictions.
............we see in the news that there are all these government reports coming in that there are no national security risks from the activity.......something they aren't telling us??? It's possible that they know these are just out of control drone users and other than being irritating and a public safety question (not to mention violating FAA flight rules), they aren't doing any "spying" for other countries.
I think the current wording is way more problematic then if they just inlcuded the CCPDA language. The problem I see with the NDAA also is it does not mention just future models. It states they will need to inspect their equipment to determine if they are a risk and will make a determination based on the findings. They will have to use currently available equipment to do that. If they find an issue on current equipment, do you think they won't include those on the covered list? I think they will... why would they allow something they determine to have a risk be allowed to still operate. I think this current wording and rule may have a lot to do with many in the industry who opposed the CCPDA saying "if they are such a risk why ban only future models and not models alreadyout there".
We did the same thing in the 70s early 80s with Japanese car makers. What did they do? They built plants in the United States. I see DJI and probably other Chinese companies doing the same.
If this passes (big if), then it would only affect drones from DJI and Autel that need new FCC licenses. It would not affect drones that already have FCC licenses according to the way it's currently written.
Any updates, or at least a summary of what "is cooking" in regards to new Enterprise drones? Is the M4E coming anytime soon? Does the new Mavic 4 Pro will have mapping capabilities, includes SDKs perhaps? Anything to help planning the close future regarding tools needed?
I don't care about Lidar on a mini... All I want is a bigger sensor with a nice jump in dynamic range. I also wouldn't mind a variable aperture and/or a telephoto lens. Otherwise, I'll just keep flying my mini 3 pro.
When will the DJI drones being held in customs for 8 months be released. This is insane! No enterprise drones can be purchased. They are all in customs 😡
I am retired from government services DOD/DHS as a cybersecurity analyst (CISSP) involved with many risk assessments and accreditations. One year is a pretty aggressive schedule. Depending on what they are looking for it may or many not be doable in this time frame. If they are looking for OS/firmware vulnerabilities (they can be hacked) and DJI didn't build its software with security in mind, then many software/firmware changes will be required in a very short time to fix these issues, quick fixes will most likely be detrimental to its stability. If they are looking more for national security they might be simply looking for what information is stored and/or what information sent back to the manufacture a much faster. In either case DJI will most likely only want spend the investment on current models.
I contacted my rep and he’s more concerned with national security than businesses like mine. Unwarranted unverified fear is driving the decisions of reps and senators. They’re firing blindly and the target is DJI.
Thank you for the report. As far as the Mini 5 goes DJI can keep the lidar, as I'd prefer a 2nd lens with telephoto capabilities. Otherwise, they'll have to pry my cold hands off my Mini 4. 😂
mini 4 pro collision avoidance sensors only work when bright. where i live it's so hot i got to cycle the batteries indoors for much of the year to keep them fresh and if the house isn't super bright they don't work and it hit the ceiling potentially damaging the camera stabilization for far off pics. something must be done to get collision avoidance in dimmer light cause in super hot places it must be flown indoors which is risky
You need a part 107 are you serious? Just fly what you want in New Jersey government don't seem to care... If there's no concern about an automobile-sized drone flying night after night after night over New Jersey and sensitive areas I am not worrying about my little DJI camera drone at all anymore thank you United States government for making me not give a shitsky

Yes, is the unelected bureaucracy that's in control. Somehow this has to change.

Plenty of DJI drones have SDK. Their entire line of enterprise drones have it and some older consumer drones.
If the ban passes, I'm starting a drone company and targeting direct advertising against Skydio.
The NDAA question is, did it include funding to investigate DJI drones. Because without funding, nothing will happen.
This Eavision J100 spraying drone is the best on the market in its category, I am impressed with its performance, I certainly made the right choice
Guilty unless proven innocent.
I thought an agency did do the security check. Found nothing.
DOD has. But two weeks later that report was pulled from the public eye. Political pressure maybe?

As always, thanks so much Greg
Sorry if i missed it but have you mentioned the new Part 108 rule coming down the pike?
There is an expected notice of proposed rule making that's supposed to come out early next year. All we know so far.
Would the DJI drones be banned from purchase or from purchase and flight?
If this passes (big if), then it would only affect drones from DJI and Autel that need new FCC licenses. It would not affect drones that already have FCC licenses according to the way it's currently written.

Do you have any information about the New Jersey "drone" sightings?
Yes. They are manned aircraft.
Sounds like a 1 year grace period. Will they ban DJI's action cams, too?
If DJI receives an FCC ban, it will affect action cams, gimbals and anything they have that uses the airwaves.

Can you even dispense the whole payload in 6 minutes?
Probably so. (220lbs / 8.3lbs per gal(wt of h20)) / 6minutes = 4.4 gal/minute
The J100 is a 45 liter spray drone. Has an option for a 60 liter tank
That flight time is pretty common with large drones.
Yes total flight times for a Agras T40 are in the 5-7 minute range. Landing- refill - battery swap- takeoff is typically less than 2 minutes.
Have you heard about the “drones” flying over NJ? Have an opinion? 😉
We talked about it last week. Most of the footage we have seen is manned aircraft.
