Finishing is a confusing subject for me. There are so many options; it can be overwhelming. In this 3 part series, I sit down with finishing expert, Craig Arnold, from Woodcraft who does a great job explaining the steps and options.
In part 2, Surface Preparation, Craig teaches me how to use a card scraper and orbital sander.

Did you ever have the fortune to sit with a teacher and have him/her connect with you in such a manner as to make every little thing that they taught you actually sink into your mind with absolute clarity? This gentleman is just that person to me. The way he describes the tools he used and WHY made all the difference for me. I recently got into milling my own lumber and was fortunate to have a tree of black walnut which was saved from being turned into firewood. I can't enough here - it's all about the tools you use, the quality of tool and most importantly HOW you use them. That simple card scrapper was a thing of art and I can see why his grandfather walked around with one! Excellent video and I learned a few things which are now stuck in my mind forever :)

Great info! I had no idea that using alcohol would expose flaws in wood, nice to know before applying the stain! Glad you asked Craig about how to know when you are finished sanding, it's something I have not understood until now. Loved the video!
