  • We take the kids to Glacier National Park and we may have jumped the gun going in the beginning of June before the Summer Season starts. The number 1 thing to do in Glacier National Park is Going-to-the-Sun Road a 50 mile picturesque road that cuts through the park through glacier carved lakes and valleys. But is it worth going before the Road to the Sun opens? The answer is YES!!!! Glacier National park is beautiful and Majestic all the time, even in the off season. In fact we would find out later when we were home is that the snow on the Going to the Sun Road was not melted or totally removed until July 13. But we still give you the Glacier National Park Must see and must do. The complete tour.
We start exploring the park on the West side of the Park. We like to start at the visitors center and discuss the different hiking options with kids. We are also staying at the Lake McDonald Lodge, a historic Swiss Chalet Style lodge located on the shore of beautiful Lake McDonald.
WE suggest dedicated a whole day or more to each side of the park. After hiking to a hidden lake and playing with the colorful rocks in the lakes we say goodbye to the West side of the park and then we start bright and early the next morning and drive 2 hours to the East side of Glacier National Park. We love this side of the park for the movie filming locations. Glacier National Park was part of the Forrest Gump running montage and also Wild Goose Island a small island in one of the Glacier lakes is the opening shot to The Shinning!
We travel to many National Parks and this was one of our favorites, even without Going-to-the-Sun Road being open. So we can totally recommend spending time at this park, even in the off season with kids

That’s a part of South Dakota I would love to see, lol! Hard to believe it was June: looked more like an early spring day in the Midwest, snow still around and lots of wind and drizzly rain. I’ve not yet been to Glacier, but someday I will

I have not made it to Glacier National Park yet. Our friends Live Out Loud Family just went there also. They are doing 50 states in 50 weeks. You should check them out. Congrats to Marko getting his 50th State. Mine is Alaska. Great Forest Gump reference. Crazy there was still snow in June.

as a 35+ year resident of nearby Whitefish, off-season ventures were common.
you choose a good one. bring a bike next time.
my parents ashes are at the far end of Avalanche Lake, looking out toward Heaven's Peak. I've hiked into Avalanche every mother's day (and father's day) for years, most often alone in the early morning. i've encountered griz, mountain lions, and wolves in my trips. Never an issue.
in my years, i've hiked over 5000 trail miles and summitted peaks over well 100 times. never had to deploy spray despite dozens and dozens of grizzly encounters, half a dozen mountain lion encounters and a handful of wolf encounters - most while alone.
i could recommend a number of other options for late April and early May, most notably Apgar Lookout near West Glacier. biking the East Side (St. Mary) is the most undiscovered, uncrowded bike ride you'll ever have. 99% of bikers stay on the west side. in most of my half dozen April/May St. Mary bike rides i've encountered no other bikers all day.
If Many Glacier or Two Medicine entrances are open (iffy in late April), check them out too.
    good job on the video....
