    Many years ago I got the pawn-shop purchase price of my first Fluke meter, an 8800 cut down from $120 to $60 when I had it at the sales counter to plug in and check out. I draped one of the leads over the AC cord and set the range on the lowest VAC. Then I pointed out to the person at the counter that the numbers on the display were jumping around erratically even though the probes weren't connected to anything. So I told them I'd offer $60 for it and try to fix it myself. They sold it to me for that amount. I found the repair to be fairly easy. :)

      LOL, clearly they had no idea what they were selling, nice catch!.

      So you dishonestly took advantage of the seller, effectively stealing the purchase. And proud enough of it to actually publicly post the story!?!

    a new soft red pencil eraser works great to clean contacts on a pcb. It is just abrasive enough.
    You then need to blow it off and clean with ipa. Ipa alone does not remove the oxidation.

    I know, 3rd comment; The dim/faded display is most likely due to a worn polarizer. If you want to fix this, you will have to remove the silver back of the display and beneath that is the polarization layer that should also be removed. Then you will need new polarizer foil (can be bought on amazon for instance), cut it exactly to the right dimensions (also mind the orientation, this is VERY important) and use something like alumium foil as the silver back replacement.

    Hi Tony, bit of a Fluke fan too. I have a 10, 73, 75, 79, 83V and a 87v3 plus some side button ones somewhere. They are just so reliable. Cheers, Ast...

    It just occurred to me that I have 5 or 6 or 7 (or more,) Fluke meters, from small handhelds to bench meters, all of various colors. Plus I has a Fluke refrigerator magnet. :) The funny thing is that I'm not even a collector. I'm just an old tech who doesn't walk past a good Fluke at a good price.
    New Fluke motto: "If it works, it's a Fluke!"
    BTW, I don't know why I sit here watching you fix broken Flukes when I have broken Flukes of my own to fix. :)

      LOL.. thanks John.. yes can't let go a good deal. and it is usualy a save buy. have fun watching and fixing your own meters.

    If you have to drive screws in (older, damaged) plastic, I like to put a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the screws. That runs a lot smoother

    My 75 has no 10A fuse. One can see the cut in the capacitor for over voltage protection. Unit has been working fine since 1986 and stays on the table.

    Thanks! Just got a Fluke 73-III gifted to me by my BIL after helping him with some wiring and commenting on that I was jonesing for a FLUKE. His looked pretty awful having been used in a transportation garage and had grease on the yellow guard and probes. The guard cleaned up pretty well and the unit itself works and looks great, now new battery to replace 10 year old one. Overall the meter is like new apart from the LCD which has an oval burn in the LCD polarizer. I think from sun, perhaps left on dashboard of the service truck. I am planning to buy a new LCD and would prefer an OEM Hitachi one, but wonder if the Chinese ones are any good?

    Thanks Tony. If I'm not mistaken the 70 series and the smaller 20 series were intended to be "everyone's" Fluke. Something anyone could afford as they were offered at prices about 1/4 of the older 8000 series handhelds. kind of like the Chinese built 10 series of today. Would you agree?

      The 25 and 27 were indeed big and even militairy used, very very strong. The 7x, 21 and 23 are the smaller ones.

    Also, Fluke likes to make things confusing I guess, there are differences between the same model numbers; I have seen 75's or 77's that have UNFUSED and FUSED current inputs, at least on the front lettering.

    I have a yellow Fluke 21 with only 3 sockets and the amp is shown as 300mA. Does that mean I cannot measure over 300mA? I hooked it up to my 20 watt solar panel and it read close to 300mA at battery input. I was expecting approx 1 amp.. I have had it since the 80's

    • @TonyAlbus
      @TonyAlbus  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes the 21 can only do mA upto 300mA

    hello Tony. I'm trying to service my analog multimeters, but they're old and I'm not getting components to replace. can you tell me where you buy special components like diodes, resistors? thanks.

    • @TonyAlbus
      @TonyAlbus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jose, we have here companies like Farnell or Mouser that sell components, if it is real old, maybe look on ebay but becarefull for fakes, and if older, you need to find a second device for parts.

    where these multimeters have the buzzer, I don't see it, Maybe it's the one on the top left? In this case 73 also has it, no, I stand corrected, the one on the top left is the screw to adjust the precision, so where is the buzzer?

    • @TonyAlbus
      @TonyAlbus  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not all multimeters have a buzzer, but i dont remember, maybe i open them in de video and you can see.
