Dont forget that the French soldiers were there too. The most famous and iconic soccer game in history. The truce lasted for two days,some s ay into the new year. When their higher ranking officers discoveret this,they werent pleased. Some soldiers deserted rather than go on fighting,others were transfered out of there. Then there were those who refused orders to begin the battle again,and were shot right then and there. RIP to all those in that horrible war.

An amazing piece of art. Sabaton perfectly captures the connection that all who serve have with one another (retired Navy aviator here). Such an emotional piece of music for me. Makes me think of friends and shipmates who died in service to their country (one in the Pentagon on 9/11). I saw a number of comments in the live chat about how war is never the answer. Unfortunately true evil exists in this world and sometimes war is necessary to eliminate that evil. Part of what makes service so noble, not glamorous, is because it does require immense sacrifice by those who choose to serve. We should work to reduce the amount of violence in the world and not every war that has happened was necessary, but let's not pretend that evil people do not exist. Ukraine is proof of that.
They didn't just transfer soldiers away after they refused to continue the fight. They executed them as well. The soldiers at this point were mostly volunteers as well, not conscripts.
