    Wont the canned food go bad with the heat in the garage during the summer?

  • @gaylebeck5869
    @gaylebeck5869 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Looked like you are storing your extra cans in the garage. Just a FYI the USDA recommends you don't keep can goods in a garage if the temperature gets hotter than 85 degrees. You increase the risk of the can goods getting spoiled.

    • @mrsfazzone9590

      Ur right!
      Food is absolutely not supposed to be stored in the garage!

    Melissa, it may be a good idea to clear out the area under the stairs and get some metal shelves to put in there to store your extra food. Garages in Texas can get so hot and that can drastically reduce the life of food stored there.

    I love having a kale scramble for breakfast/lunch. Sauté some onions (mushrooms if you like them) and then add the kale. Add egg/egg whites to scramble in for some protein and sometimes I’ll add a bit a feta. It’s so good and filling

    I’d love to see your overflow coupon area and how you organize it. I’m seriously thinking of doing that. I just have a feeling this virus isn’t going anywhere soon plus we are in hurricane season. Not sure where you live but we are in Florida...

    Those dates are NOT expiration dates. They are Best Buy dates. As long as the can is not bulging, severely dented, Igor rusted, the food inside is still good.

    • @Randilynn66
      @Randilynn66 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tell people this all the time. I opened some tomatoes that were a year "expired". Still fine.

    • @anitatamez8837
      @anitatamez8837 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the Best Buy date is for the stores to make sure after that date, they have to remove from store. Expiration date on perishables is what you have to worry about. And yes, no food at all in garage, Texas is too hot for that.

  • @Randilynn66

    If you make a Kale salad or Kale slaw, make sure you massage it with a bit of olive oil. The massaging breaks down the fiber and makes a huge difference.

    How weird, I bought bologna the other day because I was craving it in a sandwich with mustard, lettuce, tomato, avocado. It was so dang good! I had them for two days of lunches!! I have always stock shopped and ended up buying a shelf for my extra. It works out so good, we just make sure we rotate food. Great haul, I love grocery shopping just hate putting it away.

    I try to eat Kale salad everyday. My Costco sales the Taylor Farms brand Kale Salad mix which I love. The dressing is Poppy Seed. Most of the time I make my own using Trader Joes Cruciferous Crunch collection. I add 1/3c of dried cranberries, handful of dry roasted sunflower seeds (Trader Joes-good price) and 1/3 cup of Poppyseed Dressing. I buy the dressing from my local grocery store (Ken's Steak House - Poppy Seed dressing) Kale is bitter so it needs a sweet dressing.

    KALE CHIPS ...mix about 1/2 bag (washed) in a large bowl with 1/4 olive oil, 1tsp garlic powder, 1tsp. Each salt and pepper. Place in 1 layer on baking sheet. Bake at 450° for 10 minutes or until crispie. All times and seasonings can be adjusted to taste.

    I buy Kale Salad kits. They have chopped kale, brussel sprout chips, red cabbage, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries and a poppyseed dressing. Girl, that stuff is so good. You could totally make something similar with the stuff you have on hand. The sweet dressing should be easy enough to make.

    looks like an amazing haul, it does seem though that food in the US is so expensive, i'm in the UK and it would have come to a lot less, i have an Aldi just up the road from me and went there yesterday and forgot how cheap it is compared to Tesco or Sainsburys here in the UK, are your Aldi prices cheaper again? Hope you're all doing ok? Love your videos, they have been a real Godsend in lockdown but will continue to watch when i go back to work in September, thank you for doing what you do :)

    • @Randilynn66

      Food in Texas is a lot cheaper than California. Aldi is inexpensive here. I don't know if there is an Aldi in San Antonio, but if there is, Melissa should check it out.

      I always watch your videos but how can you not buy milk for 2 weeks. Im sure growig children still need milk. Im 70 and i go thru a gallon of milk a week. When my sons were younger we went thru at lease 4 or morre gallons of milk a week. Im sure you or Andres could have picked up milk at gas station or grocery store. Im so surprised at you. Its not like you cant afford milk..

    Hey Melissa...for the kale (since you guys like chorizo), you may want to try making kale chorizo hash with sweet potatoes. I found a recipe last week and tried it....i thought it was really good! It just had some onions, cumin, garlic, and lime juice I think, super easy. If I remember, the recipe said you could make it low carb with cauliflower instead of sweet potato.

    I liked to save the pre package baby food I use to buy for when we were on the go like if I had to go to a appointment close to a meal time that it would be okay to stop at a park to feed my son when he was a baby or when we went to other people's houses and or on a road trip.

      I don't agree with everything Melissa does (and I'm sure she wouldn't agree with everything I do) but her children eat a better and more balanced diet than many, MANY kids in this country. They eat a ton of food with calcium which would be the only argument for milk. I very rarely see her buy juice or sodas for them, they drink a lot of water which is EXTREMELY rare for most kids in this country. Children don't "need" to drink milk as long as they are getting those nutrients from other sources, which hers do.

With this pandemic I don’t get to shop very often so I have learned to make due with what we have until I’m able to shop again.
