2 reasons for the emphasis on light moisturizers: First, many Asian countries are in very warm and humid climates. Also, biggest group of new customers to skin care now is young people. They have acne problems, oil control problems. You can see the trend with Sulwasoo. Even they have a line of lighter products and their newest spokesperson is Rose from Blackpink. I think that’s where a huge demand is coming from.
The climate was my first thought too.
I can see that playing into it, although I believe the winters are rather cold in S. Korea. And of course, any skin type can exist in any climate. Another theory would be that K-beauty really encourages layering skincare so a moisturizer doesn't have to be as heavy-hitting if you're also using essences, emulsions etc.
I was in Seoul 10 days ago and there was still snow and the air was extremely dry.

I love Cosrx snail mucin essence. This is such a reliable product for my skin. I use it as a buffer product or whenever my skin is irritated and I need something that I know will work for sure. I also use it as a first step before applying tretinoin. I feel like it helps with having less irritation from tretinoin.

I liked the cream and essence from the Torriden DIVE-IN line, but the Torriden DIVE-IN Watery Moisture Sun Cream is the best product from that line for me. It's great for dry skin and works perfectly under makeup.

The round lab birch juice sunscreen is my favorite Asian sunscreen!! I like it a lot more than BOJ rice relief sunscreen. That one burns my skin no matter how well my skin barrier is doing. The BOJ propolis serum is incredible though. Started using this last year after you talked about it. Just ordered the Iunik propolis and skinfood propolis as well to try! You definitely influenced me and it’s my new favorite ingredient.

I love illyoon, both the cream and the lotion. Both are perfect depending on what my skin needs in the moment.
I have gone through at least 5 bottles of the Nambuzin 5 , plus in the last month I bought the pads to use at night as a double whammy.
I have definitely noticed brightness skin and clearing of spots. And the sensory satisfaction when I apply it in the morning is amazing. In the morning I follow it with a the Purito centella unscented serum, which you have recommended. The effect is like it fills up all the cracks in my 55 years skins, makes it smoother and plumper.
I’m 61yo Asian and the 100 VtReedle works so well for me. My skin is soft, luminous and even toned. I always had good skin but after 2 weeks of use my skin is looking the best
I think the skin1004 centella ampoule isn’t ranked higher because in Korea, the beplain cicaterol ampoule is more popular as it has more supportive soothing and hydrating ingredients like Allantoin, caprylol salicylic acid, and beta-glucan (to name a few). They also include the 4 active compounds in centella asiatica itself for added oomf (something the creator of the INCI decoder mentioned as being an indicator of greater efficacy in one of your interviews if I remember correctly?)
Been loving the P.Calm sunscreen, such a good one for dry skin😊
I use tretinoin for the last 17 years or so but tend to keep it from my eyes so I’ve been using the beauty of Joseon ginseng eye cream for 2 years now and truly saw results at around the 6 month mark. I’ve been using a retinaldahyde eye cream for years and this one has been my favorite.

1) YES! I was just looking at the no. 5 toner last night on Olive Young and would LOVE a review! My concern is the ascorbic acid as I know I’m sensitive to it.
2) I’d be curious to see a similar video to this, where you go through, say, the top 10 in each category and give your thoughts if you’ve tried it or the ingredients if you haven’t, just so we can see what actually IS top ranking and how that differs!
3) I’d also love to see a video where you make a Hwahae app account (a more informal, light-hearted video of your whole experience translating the Korean would be funny but also helpful to those who also want to navigate the app). It lets you look at rankings by skin type/concern, so I’d be curious your thoughts on the dehydrated/dry skin product rankings! 😊

I actually like almost all of these except the Reedle shot and the BoJ sunstick as I don’t like sticks and needles. I love the Skin1004 sunscreen and the Numbuzin 5 serum. I want to get the toner which was newly released
Tjanks for sharing, this was enjoyable. I would have to add the Torriden lip essence to be in my top 10. I used to exfoliate my lip with elf brown sugar lip regularly. Now, I haven't reached for it once since I started using Torriden. Wow! Cheers Bella!

BOJ sun serum would be my jam if it didn’t have the essential oils. I really love the p. Calm sunscreen. My daughter is veryyyy dark and it doesn’t leave a gross cast on her skin. Def one of the better next gen Korean sunscreens along with the numbuzin spf in the green/blueish bottle. Perfection
That RoundLab sunscreen is in my top 3, right under Skin1004 and Scinic! Didn't knkw it had essential oils 😱 wonder why my skin never reacted to it 😮

Hmmmm maybe skinfix triple lipid peptide cream? It's kind of extra but I sometimes mix it with illyoon or cerve to oomph up the moisture. If you haven't already, adding in facial oil can go a long way to helping dry, dehydrated skin!

Numbuzin no5 products are game changer for me. I finished 3 serums already. It literally calms my sensitive skin. I am waiting for my purchase which is the toner. I also finished 10 tubes of roundlab sunscreen. The only sunscreen that works for my seborrheic dermatitis. Anua toner doesn't works for me.

South Koreans are into white eggshell like skin. Ingredients that lightens skin such as ascorbic acid, niacinamide, retinol, pentanol are more popular than simpler formula.
Kelly, have you tried the Real Barrier Extreme Cream (original)? Many of my Korean friends with dry skin use that one during the winter. Another popular moisturizer for extremely dry skin in Korea is bioderma cicabio pommade (not sure if this is available in the States). It’s a must have when I board planes! If you have already tried these two, I’m curious how you would compare them to the illyoon ato cream :)

On a different note, have you ever tried SKINRx LAB's Madecera Cream? Not sure if this will be moisturizing enough for your skin, but my friend (who has combo on a dryer side to me) stuck with it for years and years, even after i suggest her try other creams that influencers talked about, pcalm cato cream, even the illiyoon one you mentioned (i love that one when my skin barrier's struggling), and she always goes "eh, its not as moisturizing as the madecera" and it always made me curious. But i also never rly seen anyone outside of thailand talk about this cream 😅 but maybe you'll like it?
My skin is the same way with the Biodance mask! After 3 hours I was done bc my face felt dryer. I have Mediheal make that give me such a better hydration and all day glow. I think it’s okay, just not worth paying 5 dollars a mask

Numbuzin no 5 toner - does it have a scent? I bought no 3 toner essence and oh boy did it have a strong scent - it made my eyes water and caused migraine. I could not use it. It would be great if you could mention the scent for each product. For me it is the deciding factor for a product, if I can use it or not.
No it's not scented! It's super hard for me to cover 20+ products and mention each detail of the products. I do deep dives with lots of in-depth information and ingredient lists in my videos where I am not handling this many products!

skin1004 sunscreen is great indeed, but the pump adds some unnecessary inconvenience with measuring. is there a shortcut I don’t know? like, say, 8 pumps or smth?

I think it was Dr drey who did a video or a short in the needle reedle stuff and it scared me off. Apparently the “needles” aren’t formed as a straight needle they’re jagged?

Yes you can either apply toner and essence before the mask or use on top of a full routine as a sleeping mask!
Can you look into the Numbuzin No 1 serum? It seems to have great ingredients and benefits but it’s getting no attention.
The reviews on YesStyle are glowing! Many of them mention it to be on the same tier as the no. 3 serum in terms of being “worth (re)purchasing.” It seems to be a good antioxidant serum? I’ve had it sitting in my cart for some time hoping it will go on sale 😅 it just looks so yummy!!

The aestura cream did not wow me at all. I have the old version. Also according to regimenlab's barrier creams test, it performed kinda bad compared to other creams. It was 2nd last in the ranking. Cerave cream & iliyoon cream performed better, cerave being the best out of the 3. And bcs of that, I've stuck with cerave. I have oily dehydrated skin and it works very well for me

I think older women and eczema patients can tolerate creams. If you have any oil in your skin, they're hard to incorporate. I just started taking testosterone and holy cow, had to set aside all my creams and oils and dig out my hyaluronic acid toners and gel moisturizers again cuz my face is an oil slick. That's probably the demographic that shops online! Not the super dry skin crowd!
