A tip from northen Sweden. Always have shovel in the car and a carpet. Carpet is great if you get stuck, you can put the carpet beneath the tires, that will usually get you out.

Great advice. I always have a shovel and some survival kit with me, living in Montana in the US. But I didn’t think about carpet. That’s a good idea.

@@hker2581Thanks!. When we drive with a car in northen Sweden I always think of "what do I do if the car breaks and I need to walk". So if it is really cold it may be worth taking extra clothing with you. You cannot count on the phone network to be working in every area even though Sweden has very good coverage, as I understand Canada is much worse.

We'll always have the snow storm, my friend. Though I admit I was not looking for dangerous buried vegetables at the time!

Hey Tin Man! Fun to see our INSANE moment in YNP with Max during that micro storm. I was so blasted by the wind I couldn't keep up with you and Max but it was cool to see me as a lone figure with my tripod braced against the wind in that segment of the video. I have many moments in the Wild that were Close to the Edge but not any I care to share here! Cheers my friend!

While driving through Yellowstone I spotted a hawk battling a Northern Harrier in the air and I just happened to be near one of the pullouts. I pulled over, grabbed my camera and quickly jumped out. Unfortunately I did not shift completely into park and my truck started to reverse. I was able to jump back in and hit the brakes, just 6 feet from going 30 feet down into the meadow. That is now at the top of my list of mistakes to avoid when shooting.

I was in Yellowstone one January on a photo tour with NANPA. I decided to be the first one out of the SnowCoach. When I stepped out into fresh snow on the side of the road, my whole leg went down into the snow and I did a face-plant down an embankment carrying 2 cameras and a Tripod with gimbal. After I was helped up, I realized the lesson here was not to be the first one out!

I had a similar experience. Snowcoach can be deadly. I fell on the stairs and I hit my ear on the side rail which was painful. Hope you had fun that week other than the fall. But still I hope you continue to be the first to be out of the vehicle, it makes all the difference :)

As a general rule: prepare before entering unfamiliar territory. Read, watch vids like this and don’t confuse wild nature with Disneyland…

Great advice Tin Man! photographed in winter on Mount Washington New Hampshire for NOAH, the Army and Nasa. We were warned constantly about straying to far from the main structure, a wind would pick up and visibility went down to Zero and suddenly you were lost!

I was in the Tetons during the moose rut and was stalking two male moose that were fighting. I lost them in the woods and was moving along on a trail when all of a sudden one of the moose appeared about 20 feet in front of me. The moose made a step toward me and I calmy began slowly backing away and talking in a soft voice to the moose. The moose made one more step toward me, stopped and crossed a stream on the side of the trail to the other side. I stopped where I was and in less than a minute the other moose came out of the woods, crossed the trail, went across the stream and followed the other moose. I watched them on the other side of the stream in the woods for approximately 20 minutes before the larger moose crossed back across the stream in front of me. Got a few photos. A friend I was with saw what happened and told me he was very concerned when he saw the moose on the trail in front of me.

One also should take into account that risk is relative. You can hardly avoid risks, for example staying in the city is also risky because of traffic, crime and other hazards. So in the end you have to compare the risks in nature to the other options you have.

You are right about black bears being unpredictable. I live in an area in Central New York with an active amount of black bears. People are becoming to accustomed to them and loose their respect that they are not to be taken for granted that they will run away from you.

All animals should be treated with respect, but usually brown bears tend to be the ones that are more unpredictable than their black cousins.

A risk well worth taking. Just look at the results. You survived and that is is result of planing. Nice job Tin Man
