By far the best video about this subject on YT. Your diagrams make everything so clear and explain not only the WHAT and HOW but the WHY. So crucial to a proper understanding for beginners. Great job!
I just reached here by chance, maybe thanks to TH-cam algorithms, but tell you what. This video is treasure for someone who’s just beginning to learn to photography ! Can’t thank you enough for this video. This is pure gold ! ✨
I'm a photo newbie, and have been struggling with all of this. Your explanation nailed it!! Thank you so much. Your diagrams, and simple explanations drove the point home for me. I know this is an old video, but timeless! Thank you sir.
100's of videos and sites over the internet and only explains what the aperture does.. this is the only video that explains how the aperture works !!! BRILLIANT !!! Thanks a ton !!
Hands down the best explanation of these concepts, i understood all of them in some capacity but was missing the real grasp on the entire subject matter. Your video brought it all home instantly and very clearly. Thanks!
I think I have watched over 100 videos on the subject of DOF, but none of them have fully (keyword: fully) driven home how DOF works. Now I finally understand how DOF works, thanks to you. Well done; great video, great explanations.
I have been a photographer for more than 70yrs and this is by far the best video tutorial on how to apply toothpaste successfully that I have ever witnessed, I also learned a great deal more about DOF values. Sometimes I have a slight problem with my tongue, it often gets stuck inside my 'Cheek", do you have a video that covers this subject,. All jokes aside your tutorial is spot on and very informative and I will definitely recommend this video to people who ask me to explain DOF. Thank you and keep up the good work about understanding the art of photography, regards John C
First time on this channel, Im a newbie just got my 1st fujicam few weeks ago. Of all the videos I have watch this video nailed all the those lengthy tutorial videos. Its like by watching this I have watch everything. Glad that I have found this channel. Thanks alot 🎉
I've been trying to understand this for a few years. This is the first time I believe I have grasped the concept. I was trying to figure out why my 35mm F2.8 didn't look the same as my 200mm F2.8. Very helpful.
I've watching tons of video of f-stop, aperture, focal length and dof but still wonder how f number literally affect dof. Until I watch this video. Everything is crystal clear now. Thanks so much sir.
Before I watched this video, I had a very basic understanding of DoF but I now have a much more fuller understanding because I know HOW this all works. Thank you so much!
I'm currently helping someone get into the world of photography and straight away after watching this video nearly a year ago, I knew I had to find it and share it with them. This video helped me so much!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Finally, I found the video that would explain how the depth of field / sharpness changes when you get closer eventho you have a certain f stop.
I’m sharing this with a bunch of young photographers. Great foundational concepts with digestible teaching… basically super simple and easy to follow and understand. Great Job Teacher!
The toothpaste analogy was the perfect way to explain DOF. I hope this youtube site explains some popular digital video/camera camera concepts like super 35 vs full frame 35...and cropping from using different lenses.
Thank you. Not too many people cover the DOF widening the further back you are from your subject. This is exactly what I was looking for and the reason for my low F-stop portraits being blurry.
"THE" best video I have watched on DoF. I finally understand why letting less light in (small aperture) gets more things in focus as it is little counter intuitive. Can't thank enough :). Subscribed.
This is so helpful! I’ve always just felt that I need to just memorize the right settings to use for what I wanted and I struggle to remember everything. Now that I understand what is happening, I can reason my way though each situation!!
The best explanation i have ever seen.. great job.. usually seen others explaining only about DOF with respect to focus distance.. first time seeing related to camera lens and focal length and reason why the DOF varies.
I was too confused thinking a large aperture always takes in lots of light and why it's not covering larger area(dof) on film.....now i completely understand the whole logic. Really a great explanation 👍
hi, I expected more photography videos from you, Unfortunately, you did not make more. Your way is deep with the science behind it. I hope you would make more teaching videos about photography. best.
Good video and way to explain....Next thing, hyper-focal distance and where to focus for maximum DOF. This would be brilliantly explained with your diagrams.
Loved how well you did this. Amazing explanation. Great teacher. Could you explain how the the curvature of the spherical glass effects the square sensor, causing a vignette. And how that effects the focus? Almost a version of this same video but from looking through the viewfinder.
I have a 50mm f/1.8 to f/22 lens. DOF has become an area that I understand pretty good. Your video is very interesting. I learned about setting my lens at f/1.8 or f/2 and getting very close to my subject. Then finding my background very far. Using my AF point on my subject with my back button focus and press the shutter.
Interesting video. Thanks a lot. I think that when you talk about changing focal length u mean changing the distance between the same lens and the sensor. This modifies the focus distance and do not change the focal length which is a physical characteristic of the lens it self. So, by simple terms. Changing the focus distance comes back to changing the distance of the object to lens. Hence the two first ways are the same. If you want to investigate the effect of focal length on dfov, u need to change the lens. Considering this is the case, and now u have a wider angle lens. At the same focus distance, this will decrease the dfov since the reflection of rays is wider. Optics are challenging, so maybe I'm missing something. Feel free to comment it out 🙂.
Thank you so much for these videos, understanding the physics involved is a much more intuitive way to understand these different settings. The scales seem so arbitrary, but I understand it so much more now.
By far the best video about this subject on YT. Your diagrams make everything so clear and explain not only the WHAT and HOW but the WHY. So crucial to a proper understanding for beginners. Great job!
I've been doing photography for over 15 years now, and this is the best explanation of DOF I've ever seen.
I just reached here by chance, maybe thanks to TH-cam algorithms, but tell you what. This video is treasure for someone who’s just beginning to learn to photography !
Can’t thank you enough for this video. This is pure gold ! ✨
If you are looking for nerdy mathematical explanation, you are at right place.
Thanks a lot Dylan .
out of more than 20 videos I've followed so far this is the best explanation clear off all my doubts.thanks!
One of the best videos i've ever seen in my life. Tnx a lot
true
SAW THIS VIDEO APPROXIMATELY 3 YEARS AGO. ONE OF THE BEST AT EXPLANATIONS
This is the best visual explanation of how qualitatively DoF relates to focal length, distance to the subject, and aperture.
I'm a photo newbie, and have been struggling with all of this. Your explanation nailed it!! Thank you so much. Your diagrams, and simple explanations drove the point home for me. I know this is an old video, but timeless! Thank you sir.
Excellent, excellent video. I was about to sleep but this kept me awake the whole 16 minutes and an extra hour to think about it. Thank you.
This explains every single question I had about depth of field. Thank you so much.
Exactly! Wow!
100's of videos and sites over the internet and only explains what the aperture does.. this is the only video that explains how the aperture works !!! BRILLIANT !!! Thanks a ton !!
Great video. Your the first place I found that explained WHY less light leads to more in focus. Cheers
Hands down the best explanation of these concepts, i understood all of them in some capacity but was missing the real grasp on the entire subject matter. Your video brought it all home instantly and very clearly. Thanks!
Sir, there is no better explanation than yours! Thank you verymuch! Awesome! You really are a teacher.

This is the only video you need to understand how DOF and Hyperfocus works.
This is the best explanation of how DOF actually works that I've EVER SEEN. Thank you :)
You are ophtometrist?
This was so perfectly explained. I understood that it worked, but now I understand WHY it works. Bravo!
This is the clearest explanation of anything ever
Underrated tutorial which should be inculded in the text books.
This is by far the best video explaining how to control depth of field.
Had an exam today and 10 years later this video saved me. thanks!
Dude this video is more than 8 years old and it's one of the best explanations that actually stuck with me. Thank you!
Best presentation on DOF on TH-cam or any course I've done. Now I truly understand. Big THANKS Dylan.
That is the Best explanation I have seen. Though I am a beginner, I understood everything. Thanks.
That toothpaste analogy was simply- fantastic! DoF concept is now cemented!
I have watched lots of videos for this topic.
but this one is the best one!

Very informative video, rare to find such an analytical explanation. Thanks for making and sharing this video
I'm currently helping someone get into the world of photography and straight away after watching this video nearly a year ago, I knew I had to find it and share it with them. This video helped me so much!!
Best and complete explanation of what DOF is. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for going a little bit more in depth than other youtubers I found. Now I learned the thing I wanted to know (the effect of focal length).
REALLY HE IS A GENIUS, HAVE AWESOME KNOWLEDGE ON PHOTOGRAPHY AND RELATED TO THIS FIELD.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Finally, I found the video that would explain how the depth of field / sharpness changes when you get closer eventho you have a certain f stop.

Great ! More intuitive explanation than almost every other video on the subject.
Awesome explanation 👍Really easy to understand now how DOF works and how to control it.
Loud and clear, best video on the subject
Gosh ... Genius teaching here. So grateful for this. What I just can't understand is if the Dept of field is a flat line, or, is it a curve?
Amazing explanation! Simplified the concept down to the core... I'll recommend this to even ophthalmology students, it's that great!
Best explanation so far on the subject. Thanks a ton!!
The best explanation i have ever seen.. great job.. usually seen others explaining only about DOF with respect to focus distance.. first time seeing related to camera lens and focal length and reason why the DOF varies.

I am having the moment of enlightenment 😍
me too! ... finally
Great video! Many thanks for making a key topic crystal clear.
Beautiful video. Wish all subjects could be taught like this!
Thanks so much. I wanted to understand why a larger aperture means a narrower DOF. Very clearly explained.
Best explanation on depth of field
OMG this is insane ! i was struggling with these topics no other video is as clear as yours thankyou so much !
Thanks a lot Dylan. Really appreciate. Finally I understood logic behind depth of field.
