      You are not totally wrong about MD but when Tacie was host on the AE, she would also hog the call. I recall one in particular when John Iacoleti was cohosting and tried to get a word in edgewise on a call, more than once, only to have Tracie cut him off. When the call was over, she looked at John and said "John, you need to jump in and speak up more often". I did a mental face palm.
      Bless her heart.
      Still a TH fan.

    One time when i was really down on my luck, i emailed a handful of local churches to see if I could get even a very small amount of assistance. All i got was a "I'll pray for you", or no response at all. I wasnt asking for money. I was struggling very badly with depression, and I needed help. Nobody cared.

      Depression brought me to my knees. I even prayed twice to feel better. That was my lowest point.

      Keep it up. Andhope you don't get it again.

      Anti-depressants are my ace in the hole!
      I was afraid of them before, in part because my psychiatrist was such a crummy listener.
      I’ve read that it usually takes 4 to 8 weeks for the anti-depressant to work, and that it’s trial-and-error in a respectful, scientific way. Meaning, everyone’s biochem is a little different.
      I’ve also read that a doctor might need to tinker with the dosage, and at times prescribe a whole different anti-depressant for the patient to try.
      And most important, don’t go cold turkey. Even if the side effects really suck, taper off on your own.
      You can choose a psychiatrist, or for those like me who haven’t had the greatest experiences, you can choose a quote “regular” doctor like an internist or family practitioner. These doctors are also legally allowed to prescribe anti-depressants, and since depression is pretty damn common, many of them in fact will.
      And health care systems can of course have parts and aspects which royally suck - meaning you or I might not get to pick doctors like we really should. So yeah, I might need to stay flexible.
      That’s my game plan!
      If either of you two or anyone else can suggest some potential improvements, I’m all ears. Thanks. 😊 🚴🏽‍♂️

      I don't think it's that they don't care, I think it's more likely that they aren't equipped to respond outside the context of their religion. Tracie actually talked about this on the Atheist Experience one time. The context was that someone called in and talked about living a shameful and sinful life and everything got way better for them as soon as they returned to their church. She pointed out that religion doesn't give people the tools or framework to live in the world if they decide to leave the religion and so they end up going back to what makes sense to them. They can only say that they'll pray for you because they've been taught that everything should be handed over to god or prayed about.

    Interesting talk by Tracy about moralities. I've been saying for years that the way I respond to theists who ask me "where do morals come from?" when I'm arguing against objective morality is that morals come from people's sympathy, empathy, and compassion. That's it. That's why morals are obviously subjective, because they are completely dependant on a person's compassion for the person being acted on. If you don't see other races as equal, you don't care if they are marginalized or even brutalized. That's how a person who might act morally toward other people can act quite immorally against animals. It's pretty obvious when you think about it for just a few seconds.

      @John Gonzales _"Are you sure that human moral systems don't typically also have an objective, completely pragmatic dimension?"_ -- Absolutely.
      _"Fairness, for example, helps promote social harmony and enhance productive contributions to group flourishing by the largest proportion of individuals."_ -- How is "fairness" determined? It's that just an opinion? (Quick answer: yes, which makes it subjective.)
      _"Empathy and sympathy demonstrably help foster healthy human development and reduce mental and emotional disability and social dysfunctionalism."_ -- You are correct. But how is "empathy" or "sympathy" measured? Are they the opinion of a human (i.e. the "subject")? How is this _not_ subjective?
      _"We know quite a bit about group behavior at this point, and so-called "universal morals" are generally time-tested practices and prohibitions that contribute to conditions of individual and group security and have been codified in legal systems while being reinforced through culture-wide mores."_ -- Okay. But how does this argue for or against morals being subjective? Just because the majority can agree on what should or should not be an ethical activity, doesn't make those opinions objective. It just means that the _SUBJECTIVE OPINION_ of the majority (or of the leadership) is forced on other people.
      _"Christians pretend that morals are "written on our hearts," yet they still use secular child-rearing practices and nurture their children as though moral behavior does indeed need to be taught."_ -- Yes, and that is a person (i.e. the subject) teaching another person to have the particular set of subjective self-imposed rules that they have (or think the child should have). There is still a "subject" in play here, which makes these things subjective.
      All of these things require a subject (the person thinking about them and having opinions about them) to exist. They are, BY DEFINITION, subjective. These opinions can't exist without the people who have them.
      I don't understand how any of this refutes subjectivity. People (and I get the feeling you fall under this category) feel like if something is "subjective", that means that it's meaningless. I can't fathom how that tracks. Subjective things are what we have control over. Public opinion can be swayed. We can work for (what is "subjectively" because it's our opinion) a "better" future.
      If morals were "objective", as xians think, then it would still be perfectly moral to murder your children for talking back or murdering people for working on the wrong day of the week.
      We should be GLAD that morals are subjective, because that means we can improve upon them. We can drive society to be a better version of what it is. If morals were objective, we could never, ever improve them.
      We have no sway over the objective laws of the universe. We can't "decide" that pie should be 3 because it makes math so much easier. It is what it is regardless of people's opinions about it. It's objective.

    • @dienekes4364
      @dienekes4364 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @John Gonzales _"Whether a group is able to function at a high level and whether individuals within it are able to contribute productively while not succumbing to mental health issues on a wide scale are not subjective factors at all."_ -- You're wrong again. It must be weird to not be able to understand such simple concepts.
      First, "high level" is a subjective term. What YOU mean by "high level" and what someone else means by "high level" could be completely different things. This is a subjective term.
      Second, whether someone "succumbs to mental health issue" isn't morality. We're talking about morality. _MORALITY._ *_MORALITY!_* Why are you changing the subject? Oh, right! Because you want to inject some perceived "objective" twist to it.
      That's the only thing you people have. When the discussion starts about how MORALITY is subjective or objective, you can't just stick with MORALITY. You have to bring other things in to muddle the conversation.
      So, once again I ask you, what is the fucking problem with morality being subjective? What dog do you have in this fight? Why is it SO important that morality have an objective element that makes people like you lose their minds and refuse to understand basic established definitions for words?

    • @dienekes4364
      @dienekes4364 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @John Gonzales _"Empathy and sympathy are terms for a behaviors_ (of a SUBJECT) _Yet all of these can contribute to measurable outcomes with objective metrics."_ -- Yes, this is correct. So what? They don't DIRECTLY contribute, they INDIRECTLY contribute. These things can direct to an objective outcome, but it's still only the outcome that is objective.

    • @dienekes4364
      @dienekes4364 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @John Gonzales _"Some people throw around silly generalizations and fetishize terms that they misdefine or incorrectly define, and you are one such."_ -- Interesting that you make this accusation, but you can't actually point to where I'm wrong. It appears that you don't understand what the word "subjective" even means.
      _"Your feelings are indeed subjective, and we only have partial influence over, and absolutely no control over subjective beliefs or perspectives until we are able to program a human being like a software application and morally violate a human being by doing so."_ -- I'm curious why you think this matters in the conversation. Remember, the subject of this conversation is *_MORALITY._* How we _feel_ about something. Our _judgement_ of something. That makes them, once again, BY DEFINITION, subjective. You admit that "beliefs" are subjective and then argue that the belief of morality isn't. You really can't make up your mind, can you?

    Ahh, to walk hand in hand, bare footed, in shorts around the lagoon in Tahiti sipping some good wine under a full moon with Tracie and enjoying our time together. Flowers in her hair and the moon reflected in her eyes. Joy beyond words

    In response to the conversation about someone feeling more and more frustrated until something erupts, I'm reminded of what Marilyn Manson said on "Bowling For Columbine" when he was asked what he would have said to Harris and Klebold that might have changed what happened: "I wouldn't say a single word to them, I would listen to what they have to say and that's what no one did." The caller makes a good point, and Tracie unpacks it well. Thank you for that!

    For most people ID is the Driver's License. I spent a fair bit of my adult life being unable to drive due to a phobia and had to get a non-drivers license ID and it was tricky (i.e. you had to get to the DMV, despite note being able to drive).

    Maybe The inverse of listening is the ability to argue or present a case, perhaps a debate.
    It is obvious to me that a large % of the population has difficulty with critical thinking. Many believe they just know. This is the problem.

    I'm going to make a guess here that Tracie has been looking at expanding the things she "cares about"/"has influence in" for quite some time. This is the first time I have seen her since she was with the ACA and her knowledge; insight; and ways she can portray the things she cares about seems almost boundless. Awesome to see where you are going and what you are up to these days Tracie and your ability to effectively communicate new ways of looking at societal problems is just outstanding.
    I'm going to be shameless here: donated to the gofundme link. Hopefully others will too... BTW, watched this a day later so, not real time. (if this a foopar for youTube comments, let me know)
