    hello! awesome video, really appreciate the advice. just discovered that you aren't supposed to plant the rhizome.. now it all makes sense as to why my java ferns and anubias started looking so awful! haha as you can tell I'm a beginner. I was just wondering how you get your java fern to grow so beautifully in big bunches like those in your tank? in other words do you start with multiple plants or can I achieve this with just one and it will grow? also does the size or driftwood/rock it is attached to matter? thanks so much in advance! look forward to more awesome videos.

    tried gluing Vesicularia to rocks and they looked really good. When I went to bed, all of the plants looked fine. When I got up the next day all the plants had come off the rocks and had migrated all over the bottom of my tank. Still looked really pretty, but was not what I had wanted. What did I do wrong.

    I decided I absolutely can't stand tying plants to rocks, so I decided to use suction cups and fishing line to secure the plant and attach it to the black glass. I do not have the rhizome/roots buried in the gravel. But they're also not touching wood or rock either. They are kind of positioned with the roots hovering above the gravel. Is this fine?

    I have a tank with low light plants like these Java Fern, Amazon Swords etc and I wondered how I should set my 3.0 for low light. When it’s on 100% it is way too bright and I am trying to get the balance of the three whites, red and blue right for my plants. Any idea ?

  • @cococalm
    @cococalm 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello, I have just got rid of my JF 'cos it is just a messy plant - in my experience at least. Leaves constantly dying and sprouting babies which are unsightly. I love the leaves of this plant but never seem to have plants with them unless they are sprouting babies. What can I do to ensure I have good and dense leaf coverage and less "baby sprouting" ? Baby sprouting leaves are dying so the plant does not look nice. My set up is low tech and reasonable light. It is a planted tank of 120 lit.

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +i Digit what are you fertilizing with and is your java fern planted on wood or rock?

    • @cococalm
      @cococalm 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aquarium Co-Op Hey. I don't fertilise regularly because the tank is low tech. I yend to let the "waste" do the fertilising. every now and again I activate the UG filter to pass a current through the substrate, other than that this tank is largely left alone except for the water changes and top ups .... approx every 2 to 3 weeks. The tank is actually hassle free, almost "self sustaining". The ONLY plant that does not do well is th JF. I have no rock nor wood in the tank so the initial rhizome was planted in the gravel ( I have inert gravel not plant media ) to simply anchor it. the rest of the rhizome is exposed to the water - like my anubias, but the anubias are doing great.

    .i have some java ferns here. They were going good, giving birth to plantlets and etc. But suddenly, they got black. Leaves got rotten. If i act quickly, i can romove the rotten leaves and new ones grows. If i take time to act, i lose the plant. My questions are: how to avoid this? Java fern does not support heat? Or doesnt support strong lights (my light is not so strong)? Lacks of nutrients? Long photoperiods? How to avoid the so called java fern disease ? i read about on the internet but ppl say its lacks of nitrogen or lacks of potassium, but i dont see a real reason about it. I divided the tank in two zones: light zone and shadow zone (just indirect light), the ferns are on the shadow zone and yes the plant is not rottening anymore, but is not giving many plantlets as before..can you help me? thx

      A little late haha. But if you're still wondering, it's probably one of those fake moss balls that EzoTerra and other companies make. They're meant to resemble moss balls, but are only java ferns wrapped in balls. They can still be beneficial to your tank, just plop em in and they'll be grow. Not very fast, but they will.

    How long would it take for a Java Fern like your $4 sale piece to end up being bushy like the opening video shot?
    I've glued some onto driftwood and looking forward to seeing it get bushy but I can't see much growth.
    Most aquascaping videos seem to use "mature" Java Fern (all varieties) rather than a single rhizome with a few leaves so it's difficult to know how long it takes to get the final, "grown-in" bushy look.
    Thanks

      I had crazy glued some Wendelov fern to driftwood & rocks,.. same thing happened !! except w/rocks, they adhered to them & grew really well, only thing happened on driftwood was that it turned brown like it was dead and ends became lil plants themselves. Idk if that suppose to happen or was this normal process for plant to die, turning leaves brown but at ends of each leaf was a new small plant starting to develop. i leave alone and month later i had bunches upon bunches of tiny versions of that plant. Whenever it gets to be a certain size it does same thing. I can't get them to look bushy to save my life. ;)

    Java Fern is not an aquatic plant. All ferns are terrestrial plants.
    Java Fern is farmed on land in commercial nurseries.
    Commercial nurseries can grow java fern 100 times faster and better on land than underwater.
    Java Fern can survive underwater for a short period when periodically flooded during the rainy season.
    For most of the year they grow on the water’s edge, either with their roots in water or moist soil.
    Forcing Java Fern to live underwater all the time their leaves will be infested with algae.
    Terrestrial plant detests living under water all the time.
    In an aquarium setting Java Fern gets stunted with algae.
