- “Once in a blue moon”.. “Every so often”.. “On occasion”.. Would all be ways to describe a dry fly hatch of this magnitude.. This Caddis hatch could be one for the books. Us weekend warriors do not get to see stuff like this much. The chances of seeing a day like we just had are greatly reduced by pesky work weeks, family obligations, and who knows how many other unimportant(ish) things life throws our way.. SO that is why a trout bum MUST soak up every single second of a prolific dry fly hatch. When the fish gods are looking down so favorably the entire day it is hard not to pedal down until the sun sets. We threw double dry fly rigs well into the evening and had luck in almost every run. Goddard, Elk-hair, Foam Stacker, and Hackle Stacker Caddis were ALL on the menu and were getting munched down hard. I noticed that there was a particular affinity for the smaller sized caddis, however we did get a couple big gulps on the mondo caddis. This is what my mind goes to when I think of spring fly fishing. The foggy memory gets solidified by video proof and no matter how dumb I look carrying around a big ol trpod.. The captured memories from a day like this are worth their weight in gold.

As always, good stuff, brother! At the very beginning you pieced together several hook-sets in succession, you should consider doing a greatest hits project with nothing but hook-sets down through the years!

Great video Mike! It's awesome that you got the opportunity to experience that hatch. I had never experienced anything like that before, however, I owe it all to you and your channel. This was the first TH-cam channel that I subscribed to and your passion and exploration of different streams has really influenced me to get out there and try areas I hadn't tried before, which resulted in me trying out Castle Rock Creek for the first time while an epic hatch was happening. I’m just wondering if you ever use barbless hooks ? I’m thinking of making the switch because I always practice C&R anyway. I’m just wondering if doing so will cause me to lose a lot more fish.

Howdy! I would be willing to bet that 90% of the flies I use are barbless. Either from the hooks I use to tie em or because I crimp it! You can see I catch some fish but I lose some as well! Just gotta make sure to keep solid pressure the whole time and you should be golden!

Not sure if you mentioned this in previous videos, but, what is you go to fly rod (wt and length) and leader for the driftless area?
It really just depends on the water!! Are you thinking about smaller streams or bigger rivers?
@@FLYALLSZN smaller streams. I fished the Driftless for the first time a week ago and I am hooked. Currently use a 5wt but it seems "too much" in some areas I fished.
