Great post👍 Loved how quickly the play restarted after a goal back in these days. Gee Paul Callery was a good footballer for his size, great speed and foot skills. Saru was very mobile and George Young was a stand out.
Ha ha. Indeed he does. I started watching the footy the next season and think he was retired by time I was watching, but it is incredible to see how unfit he looks. Would give Mick Nolan a run for his money in terms of that look. Mind you, the kick out he did looked like a really good kick so maybe he could get away with being that unfit in a poor side and doing the kick out after behinds.
This match was John Pitura's 3rd last match for Richmond & in the VFL/AFL. Pitura played in Richmond's 2 1977 Finals games, then he quit Richmond to take up a lucrative Captain-Coach position plus a full-time job outside football with Sydney Football League club North Shore in 1978, where he Captain-Coached them to the premiership that year. In 1981 he went to the Queensland Football League playing for Coorparoo & later coaching Mount Gravatt from the mid to late 1980s. While playing for North Shore, John Pitura represented the NSW State Team. In 1981 when playing for Coorparoo in the QAFL, John Pitura finished runner-up in the QAFL Grogan Medal behind a former Richmond player from 1970-1972 Greg Hollick. Overall John Pitura played OK at Richmond, despite the criticisms of his 3 years there. He still averaged 20-21 possessions in his 40 senior games with Richmond. He scored multiple goals in a number of games with Richmond & even got 35 possessions in a match for Richmond in 1976, which might have been his personal best in possessions in a VFL/AFL match. John Pitura's 3 years at Richmond was better than the critics suggest.
@kurtflahavin5994 Thanks for this info. He was hard done by, and no wonder he quit at the end of '77. I remember Pitura and think the level of criticism forced him out of the VFL.. Sad, as he was a better player than some think.
@johnkudyba1655 Exactly spot on John. John Pitura was still playing good footy for Richmond, but the difficulties dealing with the criticisms of his situation at Richmond probably wore him down. I think that was the reason why he left. He was a very good player in his 10 years playing in the VFL/AFL, even at Richmond too.
@savvastzionis9112 Excellent point mate. David Thorpe was lucky that his move to Richmond resulted in a premiership, despite playing almost 15 less games for Richmond than John Pitura. Pitura went to Richmond at the wrong time unfortunately.
I think this was the last year before they changed the Holding the Ball or Man rule. You can tell how confusing it was here. Although in many respects the interpretation of the new rule is STILL the most contentious issue with umpiring even up to now!

Just wished Neville Roberts had of stayed at Richmond, would have been a bona fide star.
Went home at 22.
Unbelievable.
Great post again Rhett 👍
Brilliant upload - thanks so much for doing this and further preserving the history of our great game.
This is amazing stuff. Kudos to all for salvaging the footage & bringing it back to life for us to watch nearly 50 years on
Thanks for uploading - fantastic footage, so clear for 1977. Being a saints fan I only skimmed the 2nd half but still a real blast!
Fantastic quality and beautiful colour! Thank you!

George made a FC Century for WA v SA in 1973....only played 1 more FC match.
Thanks for the upload Rhett you son of gun, go tigers!
Great stuff Rhett!! 👍👍
The action from the 37:00 min mark for the next 30 seconds is great!
Cowboy Neale looks like he is 59 years old working at the timber department of Bunnings. 😂

Bloody legend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Neville Roberts executes a drop kick at 48:18!! In fact, he did it twice!!
John Pitura is playing very well here. But this was his last season at the age of 26

@@kurtflahavin5994 it was similar to David Thorpe's move to Richmond a year earlier. But he at least managed to play in the premiership.

Glenn James first year umpiring in VFL
Reading the description .... I get the feeling there may be OTHER matches from this period?
Apologies if this is just me,but there appears to be a bit of a trend that we're only being shown Richmond matches that they actually win (?)
Apology accepted

Quick one
One of the commentators sounds like Doug Wade ?
Who’s the other ?
Doug called him 'John'
The other commentator was John Waters (not the actor of course). This was the only year he commentated for Channel 7.
@@tassportslover2013 Was Peter Landy not commentating the footy in 1977?

It's a mystery why Richmond let Neville Roberts leave the club at the end of this season.
I think he decided to go back to SA
He went to Norwood and was followed by other Tigers, Neil Balme and Peter Laughlin.
@@johns126 He went back to West Torrens initially, but Richmond didn't make much of an effort to keep him.
