  • You'll realise why Im smiling when you see what I found hidden in the mud at my feet very recently. The question is - how old is it?! And why is it that the most non descript looking mudlarking finds can teach you so much! Watch this video to find out.
During this outing I met up with Kate Wiseman, the Author of The Mudlarking Mysteries. Kate is giving away 2 copies of her book "The Grinning Throat" so to find out how to win one, watch until the end.
The online launch for the Grinning Throat is on Monday 3rd July at 7pm and you can join by securing a free ticket at Eventbrite here (I'll be talking about some of my mudlarking finds at the launch):-
    www.eventbrite...
If you would like to attend the Society for Clay Pipe Research conference on 12th August then find details here:-
    scpr.co/Confere...
Thank you for watching. Dont forget that if you want to try mudlarking you have to have a permit from the Port of London Authority.
    See you soon.
    Love Nicola

I think that mystery ring may well be a souvenir replica Henry VIII ring made be a company called Westair and sold in some gift shops of historic sites like the Tower of London. It would've been gilded in it's time too.

I like how you have different things and have different people like Kate rather than finding the same things all the time. It helps me find other channels I have enjoyed watching. I also enjoy the history lessons you give considering I'm in Missouri and probably won't get to come over in person!

I just love your series,Nicola. I am trying to scratch around here in New Jersey, USA and have not had much luck in the past two years. I am handicapped now and I thought that may have been the reason, but it did not make sense because we live in the heart of our revolutionary war zone. Anyway, last week, low and behold, my husband opened my car door and I looked down to judge the height of the side walk, and there was a civil war gun pellet under my foot! I was shocked and so happy , you never know what you will find at any time! Thank you for you for giving me hope and to encourage me to keep a looking at all times.

Kate's book sounds like an entertaining read for all! According to Wikipedia; Mudlarks in the 18th & 19th century were mainly men, but girls & Women also participated. They went on to say how dirty & dangerous the occupation could be since London's raw sewage & corpses regularly washed into the Thames. There was often freezing water, broken glass, and the type of people that the area attracted could also be dangerous. Great video! & neat finds!😊#grinning throat

I loved you finding the shoe. I am a massive lover of historic fashion and dress history, which rarely overlaps with mudlarking because the fabrics couldn’t survive in the water, so it’s always a delight when you find a shoe. We get to see the beauty of the leatherwork and the skill of cobblers of the past and a humanizing reminder of the people who lived their lives on the shores of the Thames. Thank you for all you do, it brings such joy to so many of us ! #grinningthroat

Love today’s finds! What you said about how your discoveries prompt you to research topics you never even thought about before really rings with me. In doing my family genealogy, I keep stumbling across subjects and historical moments that I end up reading more about so I can put my family’s lives into context. I’ve researched military wars and battles such as Towton, Waterloo, King Philip’s War in 1670s New England, the War of 1812, and the Civil War siege of Petersburg, and topics such as Spiritualism, prison ships during the Revolutionary War, New Netherland history, Barbary Coast Corsairs, slave ships, the Salem Witch trials, the preservation of Indian Mounds, ferryboat captains in Sweden, and the Shakers.

Hi Nicola, with reference to your clay pipe, you are correct in thinking the horn design was used on cap badges of light infantry regiments of the British Army, Durham Light Infantry and the Somerset Light Infantry are two that spring to mind from a fair few others that technically no longer exist. Also that horn, known as a Post Horn I think was also used by the postal service in its very early days, usually on the side of stage coaches to denote a mail coach and possibly on postal uniform buttons before the GPO buttons. Of course i might be wrong on the postal side of things and if i am I'm sure someone will put us right 👍😅

I asked a question once about where certain buttons and jewellery came from and it came to me that unfortunately alot of people drowned and were never found because the resources to search weren't available 100 years ago so possibly and sadly some things could be from those lost. It's depressing I think but it's the way things were.

I believe the stone in the ring is NOT valuable. It has the look of a "craft gem" used for adding bling to items. The age of the ring could be any time. Is it a replica of an antique or is it an antique, hard to say. I loved the Victorian Shoe. Was it a man's shoe or a woman's shoe. I was left hoping you would display the bottom of your own shoe for comparison. I have been told, in the past, people had smaller feet. Is that true? I would love a copy of the Grinning Throat for my granddaughter Madelyn. She is 11 and reads constantly. This would be a great book for us to bond over, her love of reading, plus my love of mudlarking! BTW, I became aware of you, Nicola, thru actor Sam Heughan. He posted about some clay pipes you had gifted him. Since then, I have so enjoyed watching you and your discoveries on the Foreshore.

Great video Nicola. Looking forward to reading #grinningthroat and I’ve just watched you on the Torso Murders. Very interesting!

I was so happy when you talked about going down a rabbit hole all because of a little find on the foreshore - learning about things you never even knew you needed to know. I feel exactly the same way! #grinningthroat

I just really enjoy what you do and bringing me along for the adventure. Watching you and Si has taken me down many mud larking pages in the UK and here in the US who knew mud could be so interesting? #grinningthroat

I loved seeing the shoe. I don't know why, but I am glad that you kept it. #GrinningThroat

My favorite find this time was the little numbered tag and learning about the history of that company-such an old company and it’s hard to believe what they were inventing in the 18th century! I also like the pewter pot and the idea of it being a pounce pot (I’d never heard of such a thing either). Really interesting finds again today-comme d’habitude ❤ that book sounds like a great read for my treasure-hunting son #grinningthroat

I love thé little blue stone children’s ring, It could’ve been a prize won at a fair ground back in the 1800’s.

Love the nails in the shoe. One of my distant ancestors was a cobbler. Nice surprise for you to find that pipe next to the shoe. #GrinningThroat

I found an old shoe heel last year, loaded with nails.
I had it for a few days, but then had to sort out things to keep and not keep.
I tossed it in Greenwich,I regret it,as those nails were amazing.
    Hey Jockney! He’s great,as is Cockney mudlark😂
