When I started school I was made to take speech classes. I still remember the sentence well, "Wobewt had a wed woostew". Kathryn Tucker Windham was another with this vanishing accent.
David - I find this very interesting - I am from Pa and my family was Pennsylvania Dutch (German) and had a specific accent, word usage and sentence structure that is slowly disappearing - "Throw mama from the train a kiss" - I know in the early 1900s Brooklyn it has been said you could tell what specific neighborhood someone was from by their Jewish accent - I also find it interesting when I watch Scotish programs on British TV - I know they are speaking English but I can't understand what they are saying - Language is amazing and precious - It is all we have to express our thoughts, ideas, and feelings - Young people have lost the use of descriptive adjectives and rely on just a few to express themselves - Jeff does sound like a caricature of a southerner good-old-boy - He is a colorful speaker
