  • Welcome back to SV basik! This week's episode, we are tackling our AIS antenna after noticing our AIS tracking path was intermittent by our trusty viewers and SVB Crew. The Captain flies up the mast and the girls take care of things on deck. We also finish up the last of our install of our new hydraulic ram after getting the last of our parts. Thank you AMAZON! Come back next week to see if we make it around Cape Mendocino to our next port. See you then!

    Hi Teal, There is various ways of sealing those PL259 antenna connectors against water ingress, the plugs themselves are not waterproof. PVC Insulation tape is not worth considering and self amalgamating rubber tape is only a little better but I tend to use the underground heat shrink and use two or three layers of it for waterproofing and UV protection. The commercial heat shrink has a glue incorporated into the heat shrink so has been tested for direct bury in wet ground. Regarding the hydraulic steering, Lynh may find it more user friendly if a helm indicator or even just installing something like a turks head at the straight ahead position on the wheel. Like others have said a cordless
    impact drive preferably with the impact function able to be turned off would be a cheap fix to Lynhs winch issue.

    On her one shoulder an angel says : let him down.

    Really good fixes!
    Yes the cable steering is good ! But go with ya got.

    As a ham radio operator for over 30 years I should suggest that you wrap that antenna connector (PL-259) at the top of the mast with something like CoaxSeal to keep the water out. Hams are used to doing this just to keep the rain out but in a salt water environment this is even more important. CoaxSeal is like a heavy electrical tape like goo that you put around the exposed threads to block any water getting in.

    • @linhgobenyt
      @linhgobenyt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He applied dielectric grease to the connection, but we may find CoaxSeal for extra measure. Thanks for the tip!

    I like to use a paint pen to mark the nut in relation to the bolt so that I can tell at a glance if the fastener is backing off. Nylocks are great, but with a paint mark you can do a tool-less preflight inspection on critical fasteners like your steering ram heim joint bolt with just your eyeballs. I do that on my Jeep's suspension so a quick crawl under I can tell that everything is tight. Just a quick tip!

    Loved the explanation on hydraulic vs cable, i've only sailed cable and tiller steered boats, I've heard many say they didn't like hydraulic but with no clear explanation, you've convinced me to avoid it. Rig up the emergency tiller and tell Teal you'll use that until he figures out cable steer for you 🤣

      Teal Goben The Winchrite is easy to use, but has limited torque and is not recommended for hoisting folks aloft. The Milwaukee has no limits but its big and heavy. Milwaukee also functions as a tool....So I’d go with the Milwaukee if I was you....V28 1/2” right angle drill CAT# 0721-20 with a 2 speed right angle drive CAT# 48-06-2871.....Bobby on sailing doodles uses one all the time if you check out his channel too!

    By the way GREAT VIDEO! Teal, UHF (PL-259) connectors are NOT WATERPROOF. You need to apply waterproofing tape over the whole connector and the first inch of cable or it will not last long. Also, you should not depend on the connector to support the cable. Add some strain relief. (The old connector (TYPE-N) is a waterproof connector but even with those you should use waterproofing tape.) Also, people should realize that shore-based AIS coverage is spotty. You can see the volunteer shore-based stations and VTS sites on marinetraffic.com. Most of those stations only have 15-mile range. A few located at high elevations can cover much larger areas. The only way to get continuous AIS coverage is to pay (an arm or leg) for satellite service. Please take the time to fix up the AIS antenna connection. Things fail at the worst time. Good luck! P.S. One more thing. When pushing the PL-259 UHF connectors together make sure the little V pins are aligned exactly. Otherwise the connector can work loose.

    • @timdick825
      @timdick825 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    • @kkpdk
      @kkpdk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep. I've had water enter the PL-259 connector, come down the inside of the cable, and drip out of the radio. That was not much fun - it killed the cable too.
      Also, if you don't get the little nubs on the plug aligned with the cuts in the socket, I've had them work loose (see above!) - it looks like they weren't aligned here. I much prefer N.

    As a Ham radio operator I would suggest that you put some weather proof sealant on that connector so that you can reduce future issues with the AIS. Any other antennas that you have up there should also be maintenanced and the connectors weather proofed also.

    Galley and nav down on the Seawind. Very spacious in the cabin, Massive airflow opening windows / Doors and views.
    I think it has two swingable outboards as propulsion (easy repair/storage, less drag)
    Basik very beamy, head, galley and nav up top. Custom build extensively renovated, personalised.

It never binds up, the cable never frays, and I could easily find the problem and correct it. Yes, it does not have the "feel" of cable and I was thankful of that. However, I have never skippered a sail boat, but I have been up one of those masts when it was leaning over the sea!!!

    In this Episode Capt. Teal once again fixes it like a boss; Linh "My arms feel like Jell-O. I can barely pick up my beer." Ha ha. Emma laughs and explains AIS with big glasses & Compass gets a belly rub.. TOO cute. Thanks for the update...enjoyed. Have a safe passage with smooth seas and favorable winds.

    The bleed points for the hydraulics should be as high as possible relative to the cylinder as the air in the cylinder and bleeders will rise up. Ideally for a horizontal cylinder situation like you have, the fittings should be at the upper surface of the cylinder rather than midline, and the bleeders above the cylinder. I accept that the installation used probably prevents that cylinder orientation in this case, but the bleeders would be more effective if the faced up rather than down. There is an issue with the installation of the PL259 for the AIS as well, the cable grip should screw right up to the body of the connector, and I believe I was seeing cable braid in the threads at the end of the body. This suggests that the core insullation in the connector body is too long, the braid should be locked in the cavity between the main body and the cable grip, and remain clear of the threads joining them.

    Wow! Was I worried about my sea buds, when there wasn’t a posting on Friday morning. Glad you guys are safe and sound. Teal, knowing your cautionary tactics, I’ll bet you wish you would have used a bit of plumbing tape sealer on that fitting of your new Antenna, especially after you looked at the old one ☝️ and saw the water damage caused by the water getting inside the fitting. No problem, you can do that the next time you go up the mast. Great job on the steering! Smart fix on the like sizes fittings, real smart! Did Emma get my book “The Chosen Ones” yet? I just finished book 4 rewrite and book 3 will be live on Amazon this coming week. May Wakantanka bless you all. 🐻

    The “caned air” is great for freezing parts, turn the can upside down and the liquid comes out and freezes whatever you spray it on.

    Really surprised that they don't have you shrink wrap, or wrap something around that cable mount antenna fitting. I don't know, plumbers tape on the threds maybe! Just not crazy about that raw exposed fitting.
    Enjoy your drive south. A stop in Fort Bragg would be a nice rest.

    It's probably been mentioned already, but that PL-259 connector for your AIS antenna is made to be soldered on. Plus the PL-259 connector is not even close to being waterproof.

    I would put a little vasoline or silicone gel on the ais coax fitting threads. or wrap the coax fitting with rubberized tape to keep moisture out of the fitting... also I would coat the top of the booster with a uv protectant. I would support the coax cable to keep tension off the connectors.
