I spoke to Kapil Kumar in 2012 when I was working on my book, 40 Retakes: Bollywood classics You May Have Missed. One of the films in the list was Aavishkar and he gave me a couple of interesting nuggets to write on. Kumar was travelling by bus to Bandra when he wrote the poem, Hansne ki chaah ne, on the back of bus tickets strewn all around. When he recited it to Basu Bhattacharya, the director told him that it was a good poem and one should record it. The poem was used as a background track and went on to become a classic. Kumar also told me that he had received Rs 8,000 as royalty in the previous year (2011, in this case.). He took my address after the conversation and sent me a copy of Haldi Lipte Haath, a collection of his verse. Kapil Kumar passed away in 2016. But his poems will continue to be loved and listened.

Even till date there's no actor like Rajesh Kanna, whose acting, charisma and screen presence that's as fine, relatable and mesmerizing. All his films were really wonderful, sensitive. Amitabh was good only in Abhimaan, Zanjeer and a few. But popular taste can't be expected to be classy only massy.

No doubt Kishore Kumar was a great singer with exceptional vocal quality and voice throw but being a trained singer, Manna Dey had better control over voice and could render intricate compositions with ease. Even Kishore Kumar himself commented that he used to request SD Burman to make the composition little easy for him if it appeared to be too intricate to render. And who doesn't know that all the Music Directors turned to Manna Dey whenever there was any intricate or off beat composition to render. Comparisons are unfair but you started it by wishing you had a version of Kishore Kumar, which is an absurd thought.

It is by no means to demean Kishore Kumar, because he was an extraordinary singer in his own right. But to say that he could fit in all types of compositions is simply an overstatement.
