  • Several opinions have been formed recently concerning the title of the Abobaku and their role in the transition of the Alaafin of Oyo.
We went to Oyo, where we spoke to Baba Amuda, an indigene who shared his unique perspective

A little sad 😔 that such an insightful piece has no translation, translator or annotations.

All the man is saying is that: In times past, upon the transition of an Oba - a Yoruba King; in this instance the Alaafin of Oyo, to the great beyond, a person designated as the "Abobaku" "die with King" person to die along side the Alafin for the purpose to serve him on the side will be killed just before the burial rites for the King begins.
The Abobaku knows himself and would have been close to the dead King, serving and enjoying a lot of privileges prior when the King was alive. However upon announcement of the passing of the King, the Abobaku will be adorned in rich regalia he will joyously start sing and dancing around town visiting all the elders in their compounds the last being the Balogun or Bashorun. The Abobaku will retire to the palace where upon entry will be killed. There after the burial rites for the late King will be commence.
In present day modernization and advent of Western civilization has stalled such practices in the Oyo Kingdom. So on this occasion no Abobaku was killed along side this Alaafin of Oyo. Abobaku of Oyo Kingdom is still alive eating Eba aka congealed Garri, cassava pellets.

      Your translation is well articulated.
Please can you explained how an abobaku is selected or designated ?
Or are they(abobaku)people with special needs that the society do not really cares for anyway then?
Or could a good example be this baba kekere been talked about and profiled @ the alafin palace now ?
      Thanks

Abobaku is a title that can be designated to particular family lineage. Or may be voluntary in some places where there is no designated family. A person who so loves the King can volunteer to become his Abobaku. Abobaku while alive enjoys all the privileges and respect accorded to the King.

The first Abobaku that was speared occurred during Ladigbolu: who I think was the dead Alaafin then. They had to do some sacrifices to Oro to appease the Gods to avert any repercussions since a grave was already dug for the Abobaku, the "Lodu Oro" was buried instead of the Abobaku who had taken refuge in Bashoruns house due to the intervention of a European administrator.

What cruel culture? That was whatsapp then and who ever the Abobaku knew exactly what he's getting himself into and signing a death warrant. I think greed is the evil behind it. I am glad that it has been eradicated, but don't blame the culture .
