    guys please try to remember this series is to show not only bts story/come up but how their label works differently from other kpop labels.
    the weight quota, and control the girls were talking about did not happen to bts. they had rules but very little and bts has creative freedom while a lot of other groups do not and did not at the time. so no he wasnt lying at 28:52 bang pd is bts CEO and he was telling the truth. he was explaining how he works different from other labels.

    In this chapter it really showed the contrast between the Kpop industry and BTS' label Bighit. At 29:00 Bang PD said he didn't force mandatory training hours and gave them certain freedoms; he wasn't lying. If you notice they were even eating in the practice room and during breaks they would go to eat at the restaurant downstairs. I'm sure they had strict rules too but it was no where as strict as other labels. Bang PD main focus was on the music itself.

    • @Kookiepookie2025

      Bang PD had seen what other young people go through at other agencies bc he worked for YJP. He was very much about ensuring that they were mentally okay- even though they struggled with these things they also had a very supportive CEO.

      yall have this tunnel vision when it comes to bighit tbh. but u r correct. But recently since the company change and stuff, I feel like this could be quite different now

    • @nuhkyah23
      @nuhkyah23 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@hellotoeveryone658 No no, don't get me wrong, my comment only points out that this particular video shows the difference between bighit and the industry's methods regarding hours of practice and dieting. That's all. I have no idea what happens between BTS and the label but I'm sure they would have had disagreements or felt they were treated unfairly at one point or the other. Every artist has issues with their label.
      This is my personal opinion: I think that BTS members have more freedom now than before they re-signed their contract. What company would want their grammy nominated, guinness world record hall of famers at the very peak of their careers and fame to take a break from releasing group albums and doing world tours?

    This is a great series! Aneesa (the creator of The Rise of Bangtan) shared that she has been working on this series (her labor of love) for over 3 years! She is taking viewer on a journey step-by-step from BTS' perspective not looking back on their days but living through them (with them). She edits their content to allow BTS to speak their thoughts, through their experiences at the time because BTS has been documenting themselves since BEFORE their debut, so there is A LOT of material to edit down to tell their story! She also gives an overview of the KPop history for those who are not familiar with the industry. She uses clips from different video clips of other idols/ journalists interviews to try to give a broader perspective of the industry. Her skill as a professional video editor really shines through. Amazing work! I think many ARMY really like this series (besides it being extremely well made), she doesn't try to interpret what "she thinks" BTS is trying to say, she just shows the viewers exactly what they said and shared about what their thoughts were at the time. She is an "OG" KPop fan and BTS fan since pre-debut! She also shared that BTS has been the light in her darkness for many years now. *(Cr: "FY" on yt)*
    I think it's important to notice the differences between BTS' worries and the other trainees worries. BTS' were worried about their own personal skills (not dancing well enough, song worries, etc), about not getting attention when they debut due to their small company, not having money, etc. While the other trainees seem to be living in fear of being cut from the company at any moment if they make one mistake, worrying about weight quotas, etc. BTS stayed until late hours because they WANTED to, while the other trainees HAD to. Obviously BTS had things they had to do too, they could've not made it to debut as Jimin almost did due to short training, but instead of using that as a fear to hold over them Bighit seemed to use it to encourage them to work harder and improve themselves. BTS were allowed to make mistakes without worrying they'd be thrown out of the company.
    I'm very glad that they all signed with Bighit, and that Bighit has caused a shift in the Kpop industry, lots of newer companies are giving their groups more freedom and treating them better due to BTS' success. These companies see that idols don't need to be punished and forced to do things in order to succeed, BTS are proof that freedom and happiness should be the most important thing. *(Cr: "Shannon" on yt)*
    Now plz understand this 1st episode shows two sides, one is typical k-pop system and how the labels/industry work, whereas subtle hints of BTS and bighit being contradictory different is shown, BTS is different from other K-pop groups and BigHit is different from other idol music companies. These first few episodes can be misleading because it makes you think BTS management follows these guidelines the other idol members from other companies are talking about, but BTS and BigHit don't do those things. Notice how when it is said idols don't have a lot of creative freedom, you see Namjoon and Yoongi writing lyrics, or when it says idols have phone bans or something, you see the BTS members on their phones, or how when idols say they aren't allowed to go outside the dorm, you see Yoongi walking around freely. It can be a confusing thing for new ARMY to make note of, but PLEASE notice these differences. It is vital to how BigHit runs differently, and therefore why BTS is so different from other idol groups from the very start. *(Cr: "Kayla Kulik" on yt)*

    I enjoy your reactions! I don't know if anyone commented yet on the K-Pop contracts. Contracts are not signed until artists debut. Contracts are for a maximum of 7 years and favor the agency strongly since they have to recoup all of the money they have spent training, feeding and housing the group members during their trainee time. The fact that less than 1% of K-Pop groups last longer than 1 year means the contracts are rather lopsided - usually the artist/group gets 10 - 15% and the agency gets 85 - 90%. On top of that, at the time of BTS' debut the K-Pop music industry was controlled by what was referred to as the Big 3 - the 3 largest agencies. BTS' agency was very small having almost gone bankrupt in 2008. Because of this it was difficult for them to get performance time on TV shows, since the networks were controlled by the Big 3. To say that BTS beat the odds would be an understatement! And now their agency, Big Hit/Hybe, is bigger than the Big 3 combined!

    • @toni5431
      @toni5431 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I saw a percentage chart once tho I can't remember where. BigHit actually paid their artists a higher percentage than almost all of the agencies at the time. I was shocked when I saw how little the artists actually earned from the major agencies tbh.

    • @ruthfischer7615
      @ruthfischer7615 ปีที่แล้ว

      The contracts where once a lot longer. Three members of TVXQ suing SM Entertainment (among other things also for how little they actually earned) changed the industry and lead to new laws. It is speculated that Exo is the last group with a 13 year contract or something.
      By now - I think - at least the other 2 companies - pay the artist somewhere from 40 - 60% of what is earned with a question of what it is earned with defining it.
      Training contracts exist, too. No idea how that is with payment. But the label can ask back the training money. I'm under the impression that none of the Big 4 now do that (anymore in some cases).

    The rise of Bangtan is a great serie, the best to discover BTS history. This 1st episode shows the typical k-pop system and how the labels/industry work, but also, how DIFFERENT is BTS and Big Hit. Some hints are really subtile, so non Army or new Army fail to noticed them : when it is said idols don't have a lot of creative freedom, you see RM and Suga writing lyrics/ when it says idols have phone bans , you see the BTS members on their phones/when idols say they aren't allowed to go outside the dorm, you see Sugai walking around freely. The série also show the differences between BTS' worries and the other trainees worries. BTS' were worried about their own personal skills (not dancing well enough, song worries, etc), about not getting attention when they debut due to their small company, not having money, while the other trainees seem to be living in fear of being cut from the company at any moment if they make one mistake, worrying about weight quotas, etc. (NB: BTS don't have weight quota, but you often see them doing a diet, before every come-back, to be thiner. It seems to be a very important standard not only for Idols, but for all Korean people, and in a lot of asian culture. ) BTS and Big Hit was différent since the pre début. Bang Si-Hyuk , when he created Big Hit, openly stated he didn't like the system that the Idol industry had created and he wanted to do better. So he choose the boys for their talents and raw potential, not for their face (except Jin, none of them fit the very strict "k pop male beauty standards" , that's why anti attack them so badly for being "ugly (!) or "not a idol face"), and let the boys have control over music, express their opinions, allowed them to talk about issues that many in SK society wouldn't, like mental health, school pressure, disparity in societal classes and so on. This mindset, added to the lack of fund and connections, made them an anomaly in the Kpop Industry. They succeed without any help , and against the system witch try to destroy them. They created another way to be successfull, and the most unusual codependant relationship between a group, a compagny and a fandom that had ever exist : Bangtan, Big Hit and Army, like a family. A incredible underdog success story. (and that the purpose of Rise of Bangtan)
    Nota: for the ages, don't forget Korean ages are not international ages. So in january 2013, they have respectively : JK 15 years old, V and Jimin 17, RM and J Hope 18 (turn 19 in February) , Suga 19 (turn 20 in march) and Jin 20
    Nota 2 : please, don't cut part of the video.

    guys pls I hope you don't misunderstand or generalize because some of these clips are taken out of context to showcase the extreme methods used by other kpop companies. But not all of these are applied to all kpop groups. It was used to show a contrast of other kpop company's and BIG HIT entertainment (now known as HYBE). At the time, BTS and Lee Hyun (a soloist), were a few, if not, the only artists bighit could support at the time (they were close to bankruptcy) so bts truly had no superiors that they could use to lean or fall back on, plus their company was financially unstable. They had to take their craft seriously but not through that expolitavtive system that was implemented by others. They tried different means and had some regulations in place in order to build discipline. Over time the rules were changed as they became more progressive and successful. Bighit was different with their system and because of that bts reached the excellence that they have now. They didn't have to go through a majority of all of those drastic and harsh methods. shortly after, other companies in the industry started partaking in the same system bighit implemented, instead of the outdated methods, trying to replicate the same success bts did. BTS WERE TRANSFORMATIVE. If you guys these training periods are extreme, just think about sports training and recruiting in America, it's not that different, I promise you.

  • @YoongisAurora
    @YoongisAurora ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The way a lot of the contracts work for entertainment companies. You sign up to become a trainee. They company will handle all your expenses while training. Once you debut and start earning most of what you earn starts going to the company to repay them from the trainee expenses. So the artist would be paying back the company for years after they officially debut, not really making any money. Also the companies where really strict about what the groups “image” was going to be so a lot the the times groups were singing music they don’t even personally like. Getting handed lyrics and songs and just recording them without any input.

  • @anitaherbert1037
    @anitaherbert1037 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It's important to note that Jin was at the bottom of the rankings continuously for singing and dancing as he did not have any interest in either before training. He was not sent home. In BIG HIT the rankings were a measure not the be all to end all. He thought he signed up to be an actor. RM also found dancing really hard to pick up. Suga and RM taught J Hope to Rap at the end of each long busy training day, as he was under threat of bring sent home. His vocals were not considered good enough and they felt he had great potential as a rapper. They also taught the younger members about Hip Hop instructing them to watch and listen to the music. It was jokingly called RMs school of Hip Hop likening him to Jack Black in the School Of Rock film. Members have said Bang P D judged on song quality. Members have said that there were songs that were allowed to be put out that Bang PD said its a good song but if you release it you got to know you are going to get some hate. Unlike other Kpop companies they were given a tremendous amount of artistic freedom. That's why they were allowed so many solo projects. Even their images were never uniform they all had aspects to reflect individuality. This encouragement of individuality has resulted in them having the freedom to develope very diverse styles of music for their solo projects.

It is cut throat and pretty harsh- so you can see how incredibly hard the ones that make it work. BTS came from a struggling company so just imagine what they went through to get to where they are.

    I’m 53, French but living in New Zealand. BTS arrived in my life 4 years ago. I have loved many artists throughout my life, though never really been into pop before, more grunge and rock, but have never been a fan of any because I have never before liked a *whole* album from any of them. BTS is different; they have many genres and keep surprising me.
    You cut the part where someone mentioned the KPop trainee period being similar to training an athlete; the athletes in that training are not guaranteed a win either, just like the trainees are not guaranteed a debut. And the training of sport athletes also take years and is often harsh and with many controversies.
    BTS was lucky with their label: Bang PD respect his artists.
    They trained to become the best musical ‘athletes’ there is. They sacrificed their 20’s to master and hone their craft. They are, to continue the metaphor, gold medalists all around, at each performance. They are artists absolutely genuine in their passion for their craft. And because they are genuine, they attracted the most passionate fandom there is and made it a real community. I have the utmost respect for these men and their team.

    Guys, these members also own shares in the company; they write and produce the majority of their music, so their contract payment structure is much different from those in other KPop companies who write and produce for their idols. Big Hit is/was an anomaly in the KPop business; so, likewise, is BTS. They have always dictated their own work ethic with very few guidelines. But the pressures they had on them were their own team and individual pressures. They (and their younger brother groups in Big Hit) were/are fortunate.

Whenever KPop is mentioned here it is to give background and contrast to BTS' journey. I'll stick around for this! 😁 Remember to do the deleted scenes and bonus scenes for the giggles.💜

    Okay lemme give y'all some short context on contracts and training. Around the 28th minute when y'all said Bang PD (CEO of BTS' label) was lying about bot setting specific training schedules, you can make of that as you wish. I'm sure he didn't have to say it out loud, BTS knew how hard they'd have to work to even be good enough to debut in an industry where groups debut and disband every single day. The members spent anywhere from 10 to 15 hours a day practicing because they knew that's what it took for them to be perfect in an industry that demands total perfection.
    About the contracts, we have this nickname for them. We call them slave contracts cause you're essentially indebting your life to them. While you haven't debuted, you don't pay for the training. But as soon as you debut, it comes out of your pay, to the point that a lot of artists barely get enough left over after each check. Most artists spend years in the industry just to pay it back, and when your group disbands or you leave the industry, you're still required to pay back what they spent on you and they can take you to court over it.
    Also in passing, we have this notion called the 7 Year Curse where most groups don't make it to 7 years. That's part of why BTS is such an outlier. Not only have they been around almost 10 years and been highly relevant since at least 2016, they've also renewed their contracts for another 7 years. Their contracts are different now cause they're famous, and because they came from a small company, the company grew because of them. As a result, they have quite a bit of say in their label and even own stock in it. In fact, their label is known for having some of the best percentage splits for their artists

    • @MarinaEariel
      @MarinaEariel ปีที่แล้ว

      Since a few years ago is illegal for the companies to charge for training. I guess they can still find some loophole like giving them a smaller percentage the first years, but they can't go below the legal requirements

    • @AceQueen711
      @AceQueen711 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarinaEariel Of course it's "illegal" to charge for training, I'm aware. But that's why I said "it comes out of your pay". These are giant companies who have teams of high powered attorneys so finding some loophole like you said wouldn't be a problem. I can almost guarantee they're making the artists pay for it one way or another because these companies will never make an investment without expecting a return, and they'll do whatever is barely legal enough to get that return

    The side to side comparison on how the industry works and how bts was managed was just amazing. I hope you realize that some rules they did intend to follow but most importantly they're managed well and completely different from the industry. Most especially having the creative freedom to do thejr music, of course still with the label's approval but still at least they're proud to say that their music are really theirs. Them being from a small label was also a factor, small labela tend to give their trainees more freedom, less controlled. So it's just amazing they did organocallt grow because of this.

    The K-pop industry can be very dangerous for the mental health of trainees. Some female idols who left would talk about how being severely underweight, eating only apples and drinking water would cause them to lose their periods, and after leaving and gaining healthy weight they got their periods back. Some idols were told they were over weight even when weighing 95-100 pounds (female idols). Jimin was called fat a lot which he put him self on a 1 meal every 10 days diet, until jin caught him and begged him to eat, however this was not because of Bighit it was because of hate comments. K-pop idols face a lot, so it's debatable if its worth it sometimes. You can even look up videos of idols fainting mid performance.

    there is such a thing as trainee debt in kpop. for small agencies that lack resources they can't cover the costs of the trainees, so the system is that trainees will pay their debts to the agency after they debut little by little. but for the big agencies they don't do this anymore, they cover most things. at first maybe BTS did that but now that their agency has grown to become the biggest agency in Korea HYBE doesn't do it anymore.

  • @dulseokbangtan
    @dulseokbangtan ปีที่แล้ว

    You don't pay for your training period up front but some companies make you pay that back. Big Hit and BTS didn't have money to begin with so they had to do alot of it themselves as a team so once they made it, they didn't owe like other groups would.

But BigHit entertainments' trainees don't have to pay for that. They can quit when they have to, want to or need to as well. BigHit and BTS in general is very different from the general kpop which is why they're like this. Kpop is a part of them but they're not in the box called Kpop.

    its totally the cheat code. i love bts but its no secret the entire k-pop industry owes its whole bag to black boy bands, specifically boyz ii men. as soon as boyz ii men hit it off, america and korea both went to work trying to steal the sauce, cool moves, cool outfits, rap/quartet, rnb blending rap, new jack swing neo-pop, harmonizing and equal parts instead of a lead with backups. cool thing about bts is they 10000% know about that and make a big effort to shout out their influences + pay big for samples or copyrights. but the whole kpop thing is a direct result of groups like boyz ii men.. so was nysnc and stuff, but korea took it a different route and built a whole system and a niche in the idol industry that's big in japan and china.

    The question, "Do trainees pay for their training period?"
    - Yes. If you end up making it, most of your profit in the first three to five years will go to the company, because that's you paying back everything they spent on you (classes, food, clothes, appearance stuff like correcting your teeth or plastic surgery). If you don't end up debuting, that depends on how long they trained you and how big the company is. If you trained for a short time, you most likely will be in debt to them, especially if it's a small company. If you were there for so long (some trainees spend 10 years) but you don't debut, you can get away with little to no debt because that's the company's fault for keeping you there for so long and yet failing to put you in a group. Of course there's exceptions like when you get into a scandal as a trainee or you quit for personal reasons. That's why most idols come from rich families, because they can afford to risk their future like that. BTS are one of the few groups where most members were from poor backgrounds.

    There's good things & bad things in this Kpop idol training system.. Kpop stars trained hard to sharpen their crafts in order to create an art & giving us a excellent musics & performances.. for example, BTS & their management didn't really have money & influence when they first started but eventually, thankfully, people 'saw' them.. while Western bands have the budget but not the art.. that's the different..

  • @notmeowbutmeow5269

    I mean 5 years of training with opportunity to make mad money who doesn't want that. Some of kpop idols don't even need to work anymore at the age of 30 with the money they get being kpop artist at young age. Is it worth it? If they do make it, it's VERY MUCH WORTH IT. We all have to work anyway. 😂 They just work harder than us at young age and that's what make them deserving of that money. Its the same like sport academy. The kids trained for soccer at young age right? It's the same with kpop too. As for the weight and eating restriction, I don't like that too. But when I look at it back, atleast they live in a active lifestyle without the uses of substances. We might think that they are not healthy but health are even worse with western artist, most of them are addicted to drugs and alcoholic.

      @crystalsnow1138 ปีที่แล้ว

      But imagine training that long in an industry where only a small percentage actually make it and you are basically sacrificing your youth to do it. I mean even debuting isn't a guarantee you will have a long term career and make a lot of money. Not to mention when you debut you have to pay back the debt you created while training. And depending on your success and your company they might screw you out of your fair share. Also being in bigger groups the money has to be divided amongst all members evenly.

    • @notmeowbutmeow5269
      @notmeowbutmeow5269 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@crystalsnow1138 But we do whatever it takes to succeed in our dream. Me myself having a degree in biology working hard not sleeping but still, I was rejected again and again and again and failed miserably too. So not debuting is normal. To us, it might seem useless but to them, it's their dream. Especially in asia, every single field of career is hard. It's the same at the end of the day. As for the money, same goes to scholarships and education loans. I had to pay 30k back too from my education loan. It's the same thing. They didn't go to college or university but instead they take risk to enter a sort of kpop academy. That's what different between them and us. We feel like it's a big risk, they think of it as a dream that might seem impossible now but whatever they'll work hard knowing it's their dream and what they like doing.
