I noticed that the enemy ai in custom battle is trash if you gove them a singe unit, or even a single unit type. That is cuse they try to use formation templates even if they don't have the unit. For this reason, if you give them only archers, it will treat some as infantry. Also, I read all the units xml files and deep-dived into the game files for 100 or so hours when overhauling the factions for personal use. Wanted to make them more logical and historical accurate for their unit type inspiration. The Vlandian sergeant is a generalist infantry. The stugian spearman excells in holding the line in shieldwall or square and vs cavalry. If you want to balance the field sturgia needs to field sturgian spearman and sturgian heavy axeman. Set them to engage so they throw their axes, then to charge once they did a few throws and forced the enemy in a shield-wall. The battle can still go either way but, vs archers or cavalry, the 50/50 sturgian infantry mix does way better then 100% vlandian sergeants.
What would be interesting as a test too: how both groups act when one side is in shieldwall .
