I changed the shaft seal with pump still in. Remove old one with a wood screw helps if you drill a hole first then pull. Install with a deep socket. Pack garter spring with grease you don't want it to come off.
The Chevy LS1 in my car went the other way,I changed the oil pan gasket which is an o - ring type gasket which also seals off the main oil supply for the engine, this flattened gasket flattened out so was leaking oil therefore the engine may have not been getting full oil pressure but a lifter became noisy when the engine was warm, adding liqui-moly tappet noise stop has minimized the noise and I believe the lifters, etc may not have been operating fully and the fresh oil has disturbed something.
I bought my1993 Subaru Loyale Stnwgn EA82 with 151,000 mi on it.. first thing I did was replace the oil pump because I thought the lifters were starving...sooo after installing my reman oil pump I still had the Tick of Death...Sometimes it would be there and sometimes not, One boring day waiting around I got out the owners Manual and I does say that there will be a period that it will tick until the lifter pumps up. And when it does I hear more of my Broken Exhaust pipe... So yeeearss rolled by @ 261,162 mi ...funny how that is..I still have the Tick of Death and I really enjoy it most when I'm doing 70 mph and I crusin along the highway barrier and I hear it... And I should buy the next one on Craigslist for $400.00 because the owner doesn't understand the whole line up rotate and line up, and fire it up!!
does the same apply to a 93 legacy? the car`s got only 100k miles and is in very good condition but sometimes I can hear one, just one, valve ticking. I thought maybe the lifter was clogged. So, in this case, low oil pressure, all lifters tick right?
probably hasn't had proper frequent oil changes during its life, EJ22 lifters rarely give issues.... and the oil pump is a different setup on those anyways.
My tick of death is BAD. It's louder than the straight pipe out the back at times. Hoping this fixes it, because like you , I have no patience to rebuild a head in my tiny garage.
you have to pull the engine out of these to get the heads off. theres some steel lined o rings in the cam carriers that go bad as well that can cause this tick. hopefully its the oil pump though. that's the most common problem
i pulled my clutch fan.. the elec fan kicks in whith temp gauge at 1/4 runs for about a minute cools it down an shuts off. mostly when not moving in traffic. speaking about hp look behind the air cleaner box, inside the fender that black plastic piece off crap remove that to. or cut a hole in the side of the box below the filter.
I'm not sure why they decided a traditional gear pump wasn't good enough. Does this take less energy to drive or something? I want to get a nice electric fan for my truck. being direct drive without a clutch, I'm sure that thing wastes a lot of power at 5k RPM.
go back in my videos and watch the one i have of cold lifter tick, thats when its at its worst. mine only went away very rarely, it ticked most of the time nonstop. if it as the same oil pump driven by a timing belt, which, from what i've read it does, then yea it'll fix it.
Vehicle weight has a pretty big impact on how a vehicle gets up and goes, I like being able to crawl up in the engine bay of my truck and be able to sit there with the engine and work on it. With this new shit they make now days you can't hardly put a piece of paper in there and close the hood. I find it funny, around here there's tons 40 year old + trucks still running the original engines and transmissions. Now days most cars can't go 10 years without an engine or transmission rebuild. Pitiful
scottykilmer would recomend the use of at205, which from what i've read softens seals and allows them to work again :O! unsure of its reliability tho. D:
Do you really need to take of the timingbelts to take out the oilpump? Why im asking is because i switched my timingbelts less than a week ago, since they ripped apart... Would be good to just to take it out and get new seals.
Oh I am, I love carbureted rich running V8's with no catalytic converters. How much does that little subaru weigh? mine weighs 4,360 at the scales! douchebag.
It's a Japanese Mazda, not a undercover ranger. Most everything under the hood is in Japanese lol. I hate driving that thing, and I absolutely REFUSE to drive my mom's 97 626,(partly a Ford) piece of shit that car is.
Stupidity to replace the engine fan with electric. The engine fan is a viscous coupling. It engages when the heat coming through the radiator gets high enough to lock the fan in. It is not engaged unless it's needed. The other electric fan comes on at temperature when there is not enough air flow to cool the engine
they both do the same thing. engage at such a temperature when necessary. the electric fan places less mechanical drag on the engine. its actually not stupidity.
My 1990 loyale wagon 4wd has been running an electric fan for years and I've never had one issue. Going to be doing the seals though here soon to try and fix the tick. May just buy new lifters for the hell of it though. I'm pushing the original ones still at about 180,000 miles. lol
Garrett Wheeler the oil pump seals will very likely solve it. you dont wanna get into putting lifters in unless you have a lot of patience, which i do not. lol
I just don't know how long the tick has been going on. Since I've owned the subie I've only put 200 miles on it with the tick. Bought it with the tick too, but that will be my first step :) thanks! adb140275

Where did you get the seal kit for the oil pump? I have the same exact tick and I think it's due to the oil pump shaft seal.

Do you remember where you got the full gasket set? Rock Auto only seems to have the shaft one. I'm looking for a EJ22...
TIA
How did you get the shaft out
Do you have the links for where you purchased all the parts in this video?
Did you have to empty the engine of its oil? i didnt hear you say anything about it.
Where did you get the gasket set?
Did it stop the tick, mine does the tick

thanks! I think it's nothing serious because the noise rarely appears anyway
isnt dad's mazda a ranger anyhow? or is it one of those prehistoric mazdas
rock auto is where i got mine, if you can't find parts go to the dealer. they have access to everything

What kit is that? and where did you get it from?
$60 is a bargain
Wow man, Good to see you make a video again!

I want to get a nice electric fan for my truck. being direct drive without a clutch, I'm sure that thing wastes a lot of power at 5k RPM.
maybe it was a space thing. modern american engines have similar designs to this as well. no idea
it seems excessive and unnecessary to me, but I'm not an engineer.

Sorry, but it's just a little funny how in part one you say you're not going to take it apart and then here you are. Also the oil pump was the issue?
I fixed mine with 6 onces of lucus hyd booster 2 years ago and still no noise at all.
that would never bring back a 21 year old rock hard shaft seal.
Do you really need to take of the timingbelts to take out the oilpump?
Why im asking is because i switched my timingbelts less than a week ago, since they ripped apart...
Would be good to just to take it out and get new seals.
yeah the oil pump is driven by the driver side timing belt.
I've never seen such a stupid design for an oil pump in my life, an oil seal on the oil pump? never dealt with anything like that before.
2600 curb weight but who honestly cares what a vehicle weighs. for the record the my wagon doesnt have cats either
@ontherun987 rockauto
have fun in the past
no you don't

mine came with electric from factory, has never had problems, since 1988
