Andhra chicken Curry - Murgh curry with rich gravy

  • Andhra Chicken curry is tasty and spicy recipe with rich gravy.the two main ingredients which makes this recipe special is coconut and poppy seeds...for this recipe i have used grated coconut but you can use coconut milk..... poppy seeds are not available in some countries so you may skip adding them....there would be no big difference in the taste.
    Few viewers asked me that why did you add the spices at the end not in the beginning?...if i add the coconut paste,maslas in the beginning the gravy will become thick and will the allow the chicken to get cooked properly..so i have added them in the end..but i have cooked for enough time till the raw flavor has gone.
    but you may add the ginger garlic paste while sauteing onions...
    This curry tastes good with pulao rice , plain rice,rotis,phulkas and naans....

    Today we made it and turned out really good, I just made 2 changes, 1.added Ginger garlic paste after onion turned brown, and then added 2 tomatoes before putting the chicken.

    Thanks for the recipe. It is very different than how I cook. I always fry all masalas and then add chicken or fry chicken in masalas. Never cooked with adding spices and paste in the end. I will really try this out.

    Hi Foodvedam. I tried this chicken curry recipe yesterday. Poppy seeds are illegal in my country (Singapore), so I had to substitute them with black sesame seeds. It was amazing!!! My boyfriend absolutely loved it! Thank you!

    Thanks. I would cook out the spices at the beginning before adding the chicken. But I love all types of Indian chicken curry. Every city and town have their own version, which makes Indian cuisine so diverse. I will try this over the weekend.

    I've made this yesterday. It was fantastic. Did a couple changes though. Ginger garlic paste, I've put it with the onions and ground cashew nuts with coconut and poppy seeds. This is true Andhra style recipe. Try.

    Tried it and absolutely love it!
    But one thing is I am on diet right now.
    Should I switch your coconut poppy seeds paste to low-fat milk to make the soup thick?
    And use just a bit of olive oil and chicken breast only for protein.

      Hi Akira!You can skip adding adding coconut and poppy seeds,but do not add milk. add low fat yogurt(1/3 cup) after the chicken is completely cooked.whip yogurt before adding it to the gravy.
      and a small suggestion--- you cannot cook 500 g of chciken/250 g of chicken with little oil.so its better to use pressure cooker..add 2 tsp of olive oil saute onions for a minute,add gingergarlic,chilli powder,turmeric salt ,chicken cook for 5 minutes on low flame ,add water up to the level of chicken and pressure cook upto 4 whistles.wait until all the pressure is gone ,open the lid,add masala,whipped yogurt and cook until the gravy thickens....
      when you using less oil you need to reduce the qty of all spices to half...:)

    After adding the masala at last, how long should we cook? The raw taste of masala was present and the gravy was a big flop because of poppy seeds. Also did u add water for grinding poppy seeds and coconut? If yes then why didnt u show in the video, for me the paste came as dry like coconut chutney, i did little bit water. Only the chef preparing this in the video can make this gravy perfectly.

    Nice recipe but won't the chicken get over cooked since you added almost all the spices after the chicken was all cooked? Anyways I shall try your cooking style to check it out the results.

    you show it works to put masala and ginger garlic at end.I like the look of it but does it really work?Like to try but don't want to ewaste my chicken in case it wont work.

      you can put the ginger garlic paste while sauteing onions in the beginning.but add the coconut paste and masala at the end.

    Thank you for a lovely recipe. However, I do have a question. In your video you state "2 tablespoons of poppy seeds," yet in your blog version of the recipe, it says "2 teaspoons." Judging by the video, it appears to be tablespoons. Please would you clarify?

    Nice Video + Nice music.
    This is almost similar to the chettinad chicken that I make.
    I usually cook by adding spices in the beginning. I willtry with adding the spices paste at the end as here..

      Hi Priya! Thank you...very much.....i followed the same method my grand mother used to cook. i too had the same doubt -"adding spices at the end". she told me ..The masala and coconut & ginger garlic paste when added together(in the beginning) makes the gravy thick and they do not allow chicken to get cooked properly. but you can add ginger garlic paste while sauteing onions. i added ginger garlic paste at the end but cooked it for sufficient time till all the raw flavor has gone.
