Clever idea, Kristina. Love the ‘calmer,’ more muted look the watercoloring lent with the dies. Each one of those cards is a winner. The small imperfections give them an artsy quality. TFS. 💜
These are so lovely. I'm not much of a watercolorist, but I sure enjoy it. I can't wait to try this. I imagine it'll make me look better than I really am. Thank you for taking the time to show us how it's done!
I remember doing this in High School back in 73, it was really fun. We had to draw our "Design" on paper as a rift wrath draft lol as he called it! So our Art Teacher could look at it.! to see if it past the building code. Than we drew our plans (Blue Prints) on the contact paper, we handed in our papers again for the second day, So he graded us again! Than the next day, who ever past he called out our names and we went up to the front of the class room and he handed us a toy hammer and a little hard hat and than we built our design. I told him he did that all wrong, but I forgave him lol cuz he was only a Art Teacher. I drew a Peace Sign and painted it with Water colors, I kinda threw my water color paints at it to make it looked like tie-dyed! So, I know what you mean about it felt like it took you for ever because the next day at school we walked in class and he hung our paintings up and I got a A+ Purple Ribbon! YAY! It was a lot of fun! I had forgot all about that until watching your tutorial : ) Thanks for sharing that and bring back a good memory that I had forgotten ; )
Great idea, K! I haven't used that contact paper for years! I remember covering all my school books with it (or my Mom doing it-lol!) and I'm 67 now!!!! Definitely going to try this technique!!! Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this technique. I think it's impressive. I also appreciate that you shared your lessons learned. Finally, it is really helpful to see the list of supplies that your used!! Best!
Hi Kristina 👋 All your hard work really has paid off over the last few months you are an absolute genius useing contact paper all the cards wear so pretty and delicate looking thank you for sharing such an amazing and very interesting tutorial also thank you for sharing all your very helpful tips this is one I will definitely be giving a go my personal favorite was the small hello really loved the colours .....Have a nice week Lin in South Wales uk 🦋 💞
WOW! Love this idea. Going to have to get some of that paper and try this out. I have so many dies I could use and try out with this technique. Thanks so much for sharing!
I always use my teflon bone folder when using frisket just to be sure all the edges are stuck down. This would be a HUGE cost savings! Thanks Kristina!
I have been using contact paper for ages for masking, etc. I not only use my dies, I use my cutting machines (Cameo, Cricut Maker & Brother Scan N Cut) to cut the images I want to use on my project. Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great masking technique using contact paper. I like the results you got, even though it leaked a little, it still gave a great look to your watercolor cards. Thanks for sharing this wonderful tutorial! God bless!!
I’m a little behind but super happy I found this video. I have the contact paper because I’ve used it to make stencils on my Silhouette. I’m definitely doing this today. I love all of the cards but especially the one you turned on it’s side. Thank you for all of the wonderful ideas!!
So pretty & delicate looking. You have the patience of a quilter...cut a big piece out & put it back together! LOL. I’m not sure I could do it but thanks for sharing!
Kristina, You could get a similar effect by cutting out the die cut in white paper and adhering it over a watercolor background. Not quite as intricate looking, but still cool. Especially for the larger die cuts. Love your videos! 💕 Thank you! Susan K
Thanks for the tip on the Contact Paper! I have it in my drawer but never thought to use it for this. I was using Stick-It Adhesive sheets. This is so much more economical! I also used Nuvo Shimmer Powders for a shimmery look. Very WOW!
WHAT A COOL TECHNIQUE, Kristina! Just different n’ fun way to do watercoloring n’ create some really COOL cards! Your tips to get better results from YOUR TRIAL n’ ERROR are so helpful~~i.e. pressing contact paper down around edges n’ over whole die piece, taping pieces to a board, etc. so thank you for those! I LOVE ALL OF THE CARDS and think the Diamond background/HELLO card is really neat! Definitely think the stacked layers of the sentiments are a must, even tho’ more time consuming! :-)). Thinking perhaps that using a co-ordinating color cardstock for sentiments might add a “pop”, too! You’ve inspired me to ‘PLAY” with this technique, too, so thank you for that! :-)). ALWAYS enjoy your videos! HAPPY STAMPIN’ n’ CREATIN’! Have a lovely day! :-)
Hey, I was thinking that once you applied the contact paper die cut that you could run then through the die cutting machine to flatten or press the materials together better...maybe? Also I believe Wal-Mart carries it too.
I would like to know how sending through the die press machine works. I worried that it may get so stuck that the paper would tear when you try removing it.
@@cathymorris8072if you look in TH-cam there are tutorials that show the process. Paper doesn't get stuck in die because there are holes to break the pressure or you can poke them out with a tool.
The die cutting machine sounds like a good idea. I also thought maybe running a teflon bone folder over the die die cut would help adhere it. I'm wondering if the water from watercoloring will help the contact paper release from the watercolor paper when you've finished the painting, maybe remove the contact paper before the watercolor dries completely. But first I think it might be a good idea to blot any pooled color from the contact paper die cut. It may not have have entirely been bleeding that spotted the floral cover die cut. It may have dripped off when the contact paper was removed.
I think they turned out wonderful! By far, this is best masking I've seen when using moderate to heavy water/watercolor. Thanks for sharing your masking experiment. I'm going to give it a try! 💜
I LIKE it! Thanks for the idea. It opens up a lot of possibilities for me. I'm going to try laying a piece of paper on top of the contact paper, and burnish over top., before I start water coloring. I think that will make the contact paper adhere better.
This is a great idea for people like me that would really like to watercolor and 1. Have no talent and 2. For those of us whose hands are too shaky to do anything neat and nice. Lol. Tfs
If you have shaky hands I’ll give you the name of my medication and you can talk with your doctor and see if he thinks it’s something you can try. My tabs are 10 mg but I usually try 5 mg first and if that doesn’t work then I take the other 1/2 tab for the full 10 mg. It works so good. I’ll take it and within 10 - 15 min. my hands are as calm as can be. It also works good to relax you at night before bed. It a med for high blood pressure that’s also used for shaky hands. I have low blood pressure and it doesn’t seem to lower it at all.
@@barbaracilley8200 I take a med for it already. Primidone. I still shake but not as bad but we can’t go any higher than the dose I’m already on. Thank you. What do you take?
To ensure that the contact paper is stuck everywhere, you could use a brayer or even the back of a large metal spoon, with a piece of thin protective paper over the card piece. Also, if a small area of the design happens to get paint seeping into where you want it to be white, just take your x-acto knife and VERY CAREFULLY (using the tip, at an angle) slowly scrape the colour from the white area. Just slowly take off a very thin layer at a time and try to feather it out towards the rest of the white area so that there is no hard edge left. I use this technique in my watercolour paintings and it works quite well. I have also used a smaller-type craft knife, using the little flat bit at the end of the blade (the pointed end of the blade). It is a couple of millimeters wide and makes a great “scraper”. Sometimes using the point of an x-acto can be too sharp and narrow. Hope that is clear enough, :). I loved your technique. Will keep it in mind when I am doing paper art. I especially liked your multi-layered calligraphy messages. What attention to detail, to be able to get them all lined up so neatly! Thank-you for sharing these tips. 👵🏻🐾💕🇨🇦 P.S. - if you correct the seepage areas by scraping, remember that if you, for some reason, go to paint over that scraped area; that the scraped area will absorb the colour of the paint a lot more than the surrounding paper. Therefore, don’t do the scraping until everything else is done, :).
Hi Kristina, as a watercolor artist I have used this technique before but if you want a really crisp edge you can run liquid frisket along the edges of the contact paper to seal out the watercolor. You CAN’T use a heat tool on the liquid frisket but I prefer a natural dry anyway. I love all your cards and have learned a lot from watching you.
I’ve been using clear contact paper with die cuts for years now, especially when I ink blend. I buy my contact paper (smaller roll) from the Dollar store. I also cut it to manageable pieces and place them under something heavy to help combat the curling. Will have to try using water colors.
Thanks Kristina. You always bring us a variety of ideas to try and I really appreciate you, what you do, and your demonstrations! However, I'll stick with the Pixie spray this time. Your cards turned out nice.
I actually have Contact Paper and although I've never tried using it with watercolor, it works great as a mask for ink blending. Just beYOUtiful, Kristina, with great results. TFS
I don't have many large die cuts, but I can see myself using my cricut to cut out some pretty cool things with the contact paper!! I love to watercolor so what a cool fun way to change it up!
I buy clear contact vinyl at the dollar store. I double up 2 pieces for both die cutting and for my cricut cutting. It’s still way cheaper than frisket and makes a stiffer mask that is easier to handle. After I lay the mask loosely on the paper, I place a scrap piece of pc paper on top to adhere the mask (stencil) with a bone folder. The paper insures I don’t damage the mask while smoothing it out. I usually use inks or chalks, but I love your water coloring technique and am going to give it a try!
This is awesome, I will be getting this contact paper and give this new awesome technique a try. Thanks for showing us how to do this water color technique!
I would NEVER have guessed you could peel off the contact paper from paper - never in my wildest dreams. I thought they all turned out well - love the intricate ones a lot. I'm danged impressed! Thanks, Kristina! Think the last card is my favorite. (and I bet you spent four months stacking all those words, LOL!)
Great! Thank you Ms. K another wonderful technique I am anxious to try! You gave me a thought to try with my alcohol inks also! So excited. Truly sharing your gift, time and energy very much appreciate in our craft arena! Brushes & Paint, S.B.
Great tutorial.. Using a burnishing tool might help with the seepage. I’ve used contact paper on strathmore boards and burnishing is key to getting a crisp line.
I can't wait to try this for water coloring and for brushing on ink as well. Thanks for giving us a frugal option because my $ is limited. You're a doll Kristina, and I'm so thankful for you in my life.💞
Kristina, you're the watercolouring queen! Love all you make and love watching you paint!!
Love the "Thinking of You" card. So soft and pretty. All four of your cards have a simple elegance that is really appealing
Clever idea, Kristina. Love the ‘calmer,’ more muted look the watercoloring lent with the dies. Each one of those cards is a winner. The small imperfections give them an artsy quality. TFS. 💜

Those cards look amazing. More WaterColour ideas.❤️
Those turned out really beautiful! Never thought to use Contact paper before, but why not? What a fantastic idea!
What a great idea, these are beautiful Kristina. My fave is the SSS leafy frame card as well, so beautiful!
Thanks for sharing this technique. I think it's impressive. I also appreciate that you shared your lessons learned. Finally, it is really helpful to see the list of supplies that your used!! Best!
Love love this inexpensive masking technique. A great way to use up my stash of contact paper. Beautiful cards.
It's incredible how knowledgeable you are!! So inspiring! Even though I'll probably never make a card, I love watching your videos
They are all lovely,,,,lovely soft colours,,,,.xxxx 💕💕
Cool technique.

We used to use contract paper to line cupboard shelfs, it sure has been around a long time you sure have a beautiful gift
So pretty & delicate looking. You have the patience of a quilter...cut a big piece out & put it back together! LOL. I’m not sure I could do it but thanks for sharing!
I need to try this technique. I love watercoloring but I’m not that good. But after watching your video, I think I can do it! Thanks, Kristina!
Super cool idea! I loved them all!👏
Great cards Kristina! Thanks for the idea!
Really this produced a nice result overall, I like the lemon & green one the best
How very interesting...
I'm always amazed at these creative people that come up with these ideas
Very cool technique and really beautiful cards. Tfs

You could get a similar effect by cutting out the die cut in white paper and adhering it over a watercolor background. Not quite as intricate looking, but still cool. Especially for the larger die cuts.

This is amazing and makes good use of dies . I think it is great and thanks for sharing it with us Kristina.
These cards are GORGEOUS! Thx for testing the contact paper method.
Very different kind of cards Really like them Thank you
Great technique! Thanks for sharing.
You are talented and an inspiration. Purchased my first watercolor set from watching you. I’m not any good but with practice.... maybe. 🌸
Very cool 😎
Awesome technique!

Or a brayer, maybe.
I've recently purchased contact brand paper at the dollar store. It not a giant roll but it's a couple yards i think. Pretty good for a dollar.

It is magnificent to discover this fantastic tenchique for a beautfiul cards. THANKS! Kristina for sharing
Beautiful cards. Glad to hear it took you "10 years" to glue the die cuts together. Then I don't feel bad when mine don't work like the videos.
I love watercolor too! Such a neat and helpful idea! Beautiful!
This is sooooo cool. I thing pressing down around the edges with your fingers or a bone folder might prevent as much seeping. TYFS 💕
This is a great idea for people like me that would really like to watercolor and 1. Have no talent and 2. For those of us whose hands are too shaky to do anything neat and nice. Lol. Tfs
Yeah, shaky hands are a big problem!!
You need to skip over to another channel called, 'Lets Make Art'. Sarah is awesome and if i can paint anyone can!
