I used to work with a guy that was in the U.S. air force in Spain. He said that the Blackbird mission time frame was secret. But they would know when it was going to happen when a 130 tanker would take off, 45 minutes later another tanker would take off, then about a half hour later another tanker would take off. They knew the Blackbird was soon to follow since it had to fuel up shortly after it lifted off. Him and his crew would drive security nuts by having to "work" on the 130's radar in the middle of the night and focus the beam at full strength at the dark buildings in area where the Blackbirds were located. This would cause the florescent lights to illuminate so security would go tearing off into that side of the building so while security was going room to room in that side of the darkened building, they would illuminate the lights in another section and watch them tear off into that side of the building or another building. They apparently did this several times before they were caught. I was told that the command staff was not amused.

The tanker refueling immediately after takeoff is the perfect and most accurate touch. Oil execs loved the SR71. She drained her tanks by the time she got to 10000 ft. Cool video.
The closest service jet that could come close to matching the SR-71 in speed was the MIG 25 Foxbat. Even if you attempted it the engines were pretty much toast after a few minutes of use. This was one of the approaches that was thought up in a thought tank known as the "golden bb". Basically a head on attack with a missile at combined speeds exceeding Mach 3. Worked out about as well.

The problem is ultimately that the missiles' small control surfaces just cannot have any appreciable effect at the thin air of that altitude, but the SR-71's proportionally larger ones allow it to perform greater course alterations. At lower altitudes, the missiles would absolutely win, but without thrust vectoring they just cannot really steer themselves that high up.

It's Amazing to see that legendary plane in DCS. However... That scenario was not realistic. Usually, this type of action would have happened high up. The SR-71 would have already be at Angel 70+ (Mach 3+) and the Mig-31 would have had to rocket upward to meet it.
The British claimed that they zoom-climbed an English Electric Lightning up to an SR-71's flight path once. Not a chance in hell they could have intercepted one that way, though.
@@stcredzero Records show that Hale also climbed to 88,000 ft (27,000 m) in his Lightning F.3 XR749. This was not sustained level flight but a ballistic climb, in which the pilot takes the aircraft to top speed and then puts the aircraft into a climb, exchanging speed for altitude.

@@agsystems8220 Yeah, much like anti ballistic intercepts, you want to catch them in a net from the front, guded by high power ground radar, and use your fast planes to boost even faster missiles to favourable launch positions. Blackbirds, and MIRVs for that matter cant dodge worth shit, and a dozen missiles coming from every angle of its front hemisphear will make short work of either. But people as ever are all too eager to think in terms of 1v1s with contrived initial setups. In reality, any spyplane, no matter how performant is utterly useless at penetrating an IADS network, especially one as stupidly overbuilt as that of the soviets.
Yeah, as much as anything else, this is a great example of why they didn't take the chance with the SR-71 doing this in real life, but the story for this video was great entertainment.

Mig-31 Service ceiling 65,000 feet Top speed 1850 MPH Cannot sustain speeds of over Mach 2.83 without engine damage. Uses afterburning turbofan engines SR-71 uses afterburning turbojet axial-flow turbojet engines. SR-71 Service ceiling 85,000 feet. Still, the fastest plane ever built in the world today. Sustained supersonic flight speed at Mach 3 for 90 minutes. Not one has ever been shot down. Reduced radar cross-sectioning invisible to the Mig-31 Carries no weapons. Speed is its only weapon. Can outrun any type of missiles. 5500 missiles have been fired at it not one hit If the SR-71 did carry weapons the Mig-31 wouldn't stand a chance.
I was thinking with how much he turns he must be bleeding a ton of speed and be more vulnerable to followup shots, but no. He reached mach 3 and was gone xD
But you are aware of the rocket fired at you - with information about it's approximate distance, and heading, as it is tracking you via various sensors..
@@indyawichofficial1346 for that maneuver to work it has to be performed with correct timing so the missiles do not have enough energy nor time for corrections. You need to know exactly where the missiles are. Not even 4.5th gen fighters from the 1990s and 2000s have sensors to know exactly where missiles are, that came only with 5th gen (i.e. F-35). The Blackbird with 1960s and 1970s technology, only can know that a radar is locking it (i.e., the MiGs, not how many missiles are in the air nor where, let alone "tracking" them) and the approximate direction of the radar, not the exact position. So no, the pilot cannot do that.

He told me when you're used to flying a 2,000 mph, you needed to drive a fast car. Also, I believe when the SR71 took off it had a couple of Ford Mustangs supporting the wings.
Again this shit with missiles flying past the target, which just dodges them like in a Hollywood action movie. In reality, rockets do not need a direct hit. They hit the target with a cloud of directed fragments, exploding upon approach. Therefore, such avoidance is not possible in real life. DCS needs to improve the missile model.
I'd like to know how the pilot notices that the missile is just below and behind him, in time to dodge The missile is coming up on the pilots blindspot, so unless the sr71 has some advanced laser sensor system that detects the missile i have no idea how to do this without 3rd perdon view
most missiles in DCS do have a prox fuse / splash damage. . each of those missiles were approx 50ft away? Kind of a reach here but maybe while traveling at mach 3 the range of the prox fuse had to be smaller because at those speeds and at normal prox fuse distances the shrapnel cloud would not make it to the jet before the jet was already past it? (air resistance etc)
@@arkadious9320 - the thinner air at 80,000 feet would impede the shrapnel less, not more, than at lower altitude. So if anything, the shrapnel damage radius would be greater and the fragments faster.
I’ve seen breakdowns on the math involved with shooting down an SR-71. Basically, if it’s not a simulation where you know exactly where the Blackbird is and the crew isn’t trying to evade, it’s impossible. That aircraft flies at 33 MILES per minute... that’s an entire mile every couple of seconds. One change in acceleration or heading, and the SR-71 is now miles away in a completely different location, meaning the intercept now has to change dramatically. This isn’t like an F-18 going full throttle but still being within the same general area. We’re talking miles. The math on it is insane. They tried to shoot it down hundreds of times, scoring a grand total of zero hits. The story about the Swedes (I believe) knew where it was and where it was going. I can hit an SR-71 with a baseball if I knew exactly where it was going to be and when...
That's the thing. The Swedes knew when and were it would be when they did the intercept. What I have always wondered is what kind of counter measures the SR-71 employed.
None, the Swedes intercepted it while it had suffered an engine malfunction. It was unable to climb back to a safe altitude so it was limping along to a NATO airbase. The Swedes intercepted it and escorted it out of their airspace and away from several Russian interceptors that were on its tail. Sometime either after or late in the Cold War both Swedish pilots were awarded medals by the US air-force.
The swedes knew cos blackbird had engine problems that's why it entered Swedish airspace other wise no way could viggen get lock on on Internet found it by pilot think
Certainly not in any officially listed capacity; in fact, I believe the majority of the fleet was destroyed specifically to ensure that Iran couldn't get any parts for their Tomcats.
I don't know, I call a bit of BS on all of this, I am not sure that the blackbird could handle even 1/2 of the stresses on its airframe portrayed in this video the way it moves about. If this was truly the case, we would have seen a plethora of SR-71's variants out there in the real world. There is a reason, bar the cost of the project, that these planes and the overall 'tactic' had been scrapped - with MIG 31's introduction to say the least and far better SAM capabilities. Every single video I have seen so far makes these systems and aircraft COMPLETELY and UTTERLY useless against the SR-71. My god, c'mon people - a person with 1/4 of a brain would be pressing the 'build more' button if all of this were true.
An other video of yours made me sweat... Those R-33 missiles had dummy fuse and warhead? :D They got really close to the Blackbird but no detonation... :D

Got to put my hands on one at the old SAC air strip in Omaha. It was so sad all those cool planes and jets sitting out in the elements all those years.
I was stationed at Kadena AFB and we kept our SR-71's underground. They traveled up a grade onto the runway and took off.

I really dig those cinematic clips. More SR-71 Blackbird, it's such a beautiful, powerful and fascinating piece of machinery.

@@victoroduarte Not with 2, certainly, and without either a computer guided intercept or a shit hot operator not at all, but in reality the mig would be effectively the first stage of the missile, guided entirely by the ground and aiming to be in front of the bird. @@agsystems8220 Yeah, much like anti ballistic intercepts, you want to catch them in a net from the front, guded by high power ground radar, and use your fast planes to boost even faster missiles to favourable launch positions. It certainly does not have. You don't even see the guy behind you.
If it were that simple, the USAF would not have retired the SR-71. I'm sure that, from the trajectory, the PVO would destroy the aircraft.
I live in LWW, CA very close Beale AF base. At one time a number of SR71 pilots lived here. One drove an Aston Martin DB 9.
DCS needs to improve the missile model.

most missiles in DCS do have a prox fuse / splash damage. . each of those missiles were approx 50ft away?
