And here we discover just how perfect the clarinet and viola sound together. Amazing

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Indeed, The clarinet blends/compliments very well with string instruments, after all, That's ett they reolacr the string section in bands and wind orchestras

After the introduction, the main theme (from bars 17 to 28 or from 1:07 to 1:56) of the 1st movement, is more than just a paraphrase of Edvard Grieg's Solveig's Song from the Peer Gynt suite. Peer Gynt was composed in 1875 (and premiered the next year alongside Henrik Ibsen's play) and this beautiful double concerto was composed in 1911.

How patronising the comment by Paul Bunyan is. It's by no means a little piece, and in its own way, very original (not least on the choice of instruments). Stravinsky's own neoclassical period, which was very extended, is one piece of evidence to back up the point that Bartje makes.

Bruch was already outdated when he landed his only real hit: The 1st Violinconcerto.
He refused to go further than Mendelssohn did in harmony 20 years before him.
Not to say that his music isn't nicely crafted, it is just outdone by his contemporaries. Just consider: His last work, the Octett for Strings was written in the same year as Bartok wrote "The miraculous Mandarin".
They sound like they are 100 years apart.
