This song is gushing Barry Manilow from everywhere. Ant's style, voice, dramatic minor chords, lyrics... all of it. It's sad and beautiful. Dickens would be proud.
A truly wonderful talent who is recognised by all that appreciate good music from the heart. There's so much substance to his music in so many varied compositions...........something for everyone. A unique musician indeed!
For me, the style of this song is more in keeping with the pastorally majestic Wind and Wuthering than Nursery Cryme. It could have sat very comfortably on that superb album, had Ant still been a Genesis member in 1976. Yes this is the finest song on his Sides album.
In as much as Kate Bush's amazing song Wuthering Heights evokes, in only a few minutes of music and lyric, a pivotal plot line of Emily Brontë's classic novel of the same name, this monumental work by Ant exquisitely distills, in a little over six minutes, much of the central plot of one of Charles Dickens' greatest novels. This song (and Kate's) should be played on day one of every English Lit class, and if I were a professor, it would be.
Alex, a fine idea to play this piece as introduction to a Dicken's "Bleak house" lesson - can't you propose it to an English literature professor? As retired professor here in Leipzig, Germany, i know that this kind of motivation support can be most helpful for students to really dig themselves in into - in this case - Dicken's fantastic world!!
Stupenda! Ispirata alla "Casa desolata" di Dickens, in realta' e' probabile che il brano sia una trasfigurazione autobiografica. Comunque, Phillips era il piu' "compositore" dei Genesis.
Amazing how universal Ant's music is, isn't it? Can't you just hear Phil doing the vocal track on this excellent song? Not that it matters. This being said; what difference does it make? In retrospect; since "Genesis" essentially means "from the origin," it only stands to reason that Ant's compilations are linear to the "Gabriel/Collins/Banks/Rutherford" tracks that we all relish so much. In my opinion, it's all damn good "Genesis" material.

BLEAK HOUSE...IT IS WHAT IT IS.....SIMPLY BRILLIANT..WHAT AN ARTIST THIS GUY IS..LOVE IT..THANKS ANT..
Very romantic.
I like this, it made me think of Peter Jones from Toger Moth Tales and Camel.
In the canon of songs by Ant, this is one of his best.
А beautiful song in the romantic spirit of early Genesis
A perfectly crafted beautiful song . Ive loved it since I first heard it..... and always will

Wonderful ancient style ballad by Ant, with perfume of the seventies freedom. My favourite from "Sides". Thanks

Truly a STUNNINGLY Beautiful song, Ant is a Modern-Day Bach/Chopin/Segovia/Van Cliburn Combo !!

You've omitted the name Hackett from your list of famous Genesis band members.
But yes this song is just beautiful
