Hey Eddie, I'm your neighbor down the street. We are in Oklahoma right now and our new Ram Rebel with only 8k miles on it just had the CP4 explode on us. The 2021 and 2022 ecodiesels do not have the recall on them yet. However the warranty is covering the repair. Just an FYI to everyone with this fuel pump, you will hear the pump making clicking sounds if it's failing. It will sound just like a ac condenser clicking on and off.

Spring tension is supposed to keep piston rollers from spinning that’s why lubrication is crucial. Water, bad fuel priming or aeration in fuel pump can damage all pump components.

To ease the anxiety a little, it is not easy for the piston and roller to rotate!
Imagine the roller half way up the cam contour then, in order to rotate, one side of the roller will have to roll higher up the contour and it is not free to do this because of the spring pressure holding it firmly against the cam. Only, and momentarily, when the roller is precisely at the top or the bottom of the cam will it be technically free to rotate - providing a force exists and it happens instantaneously before the roller starts its next ascent or descent. This is not a realistic scenario. I would guess that if a pump ends up with its roller skewed by 90 degrees it's because other failures have preceded it, such as debris jamming or giving rise to friction in the piston walls and the piston therefore losing engagement with the cam. The problems many of you guys are experiencing in the USA I believe have been caused to a great extent by fuel quality issues. I drive a Macan S Diesel in the UK and there are very few problems reported with these pumps. They are also widely used in many vehicles worldwide in CP4.1 and 4.2 form and, again very few failures reported. However, I can totally understand the concerns, even misery, of many of your viewers trying to resolve matters which ought to be resolved by manufacturers.
Nice video with good clear pictures of internal parts. Thanks

Great explanation of the piston and roller dynamics in relation to the cam. I had been trying to visualize the engineering dynamics in my mind and knew it had to be something like as you described. For the most part all I kept running across were videos of individuals expressing the incredulity of an engineered part that functions against the logical mind. It makes total sence now. It is unfortunate there has been so much grief caused due to an engineering that has zero tolerance for subtle anomalies.

  • @scottdowney4318

Bucket can rotate in the bore, it does not do that very often. The reason I think, is the spring keeps pressure on the bucket. And the roller as it interfaces with the shaft cam wants to naturally align as it comes together to push the bucket up. What happens is score or wear forms on the roller-cam, one side or the other. That produces a side vector force and one side of the bucket roller drags compared to other side and it twists out of alignment. Of course then, it can wear a flat spot in the roller and cam and it never goes back aligned right again, and it disintegrates. It is a very poor design for sure.

It's not true that there is nothing that prevents the roller from spinning:
Maybe difficult to understand, but as long as the roller is pressed down to the cam, the cam itself prevents the roller from spinnng. For sake of accurancy: there are two positions of the cam where spinning isn't prevented:these are the most "upper" position of the cam and the lowest position. But these are very short periods compared to the whole revolution of the camshaft.

    • @fs0088

@@EddieLife3500 yes, i've seen such cases too, but that can't be the primary fault, because the roller cannot spin, as long it is in contact with the cam. So i assume this: the (cylindrical) "roller housing" gets stuck somewhere near the head and THEN it can spin.
