Pulled a cp4 out of 2013 Ford 6.7l with 300k miles. It was leaking at the seal between the left pump head and body. So I got it apart expecting to see scoring and debris and the rollers and cam looked new. The two little pistons looked new and this truck had atf added to the fuel not even on a regular basis.
I wonder if ATF is the cause of leaking seal on the pump. Diesel fuel mixed with ATF is not best chemical composition for keeping seal protected from deteriorating.
These are good lubricity additives. www.amsoil.com/c/diesel-additives/18/?zo=5257753 Work in progress testing this lubrication properties of this additive and other brands. Test results will be available next year or maybe even this year.
I have a Ford 6.7 (2019) with 20k miles used for rv towing. I’ve been using Stanadyne Lubricity Formula. I’ve seen independent reviews that rate it highly. It also provides (supposedly) a water deemulsification component to help the water separator. What is your opinion?
The company says it improves lubricity, however no data how much it improves vs untreated diesel fuel. I personally would not use it. Diesel injection system is to expensive to be cheap. Water separation is done by the filter, if filter fails this fluid is not going to help prevent fuel system from failing due to water.
I use 250 ml Liqui Molly 2 stroke oil in tank before filling it up. It has 350.000 km now and never changed the chain or pump. Its a 2009 modell 318d N47.
I drive 6 speed automatic diesel truck myself and would never trade in for 10 speed. Fords 6 speed transmission is one solid, reliable, easy to service transmission. 6 speed has dipstick and I can check fluid level and color anytime I want. 10 speed transmission is not reliable. 10 speed is very complex, not easily to service. 10 speed doesn't have dipstick and changing fluid is a challenge. For me reliability, ability to check fluid and easily to service is very important, 6 speed is just awesome. If I had money to replace truck every 3 years, I wouldn't care about reliability, quality, service and so on, I would buy 10 speed.
so something as good as the SPE disaster prevention kit + EXO filter with fuel additive + fuel lubrication and good fuel should help keep it safe? i do plan on going CP4.2 10mm with the internal filters as well, im sure thats enough to make sure i dont screw myself once i start voiding my warranty with a bigger turbo and tune.

I do hotshot and rack on the miles quick. Any suggestions??? And what is the best fuel additive for a Cummins?? I use EDT hotshot secrets.
Fuel additives with lubricity definitely will extend the life of the pump. Will it prevent pump from failing, good chance it will. I personally have not heard from anyone who was using Fuel additive every fuel tank with lubricity and their pump failed. There are different Fuel additives, not every Fuel additive has lubricity. Regular cp3 pump cannot supply enough pressure that cp4 provides from factory. Cp3 pump must be heavily modified beyond it's designed basis. Once it's modified it can provide high pressure, however it's no longer regular well known reliable cp3 pump, its hybrid cp3 pump with unknown reliability. Do cp3 pumps fail, of course they do when contamination enters fuel and not enough lubricity. Question for you about converting to cp3 hybrid. When the cp3 hybrid pump fails on the road and you have to be towed to have it fixed, what repair shop is going to have cp3 hybrid in stock or will be able to find one quickly? Not many, certainly not ram dealers and they will tell you that you have to use cp4 as replacement. Also, computer system might not even work properly with hybrid cp3. If it was my truck, I would use quality fuel additive with lubricity every fuel tank, no skipping. Always use quality fuel filters from reputable reseller or directly from distributor. Change fuel filter per factory intervals. What is the best fuel additive for diesel, stay subscribed I will make a video with data as a proof. If I have not answered your questions please let me know.
Keep using EDT. I use that in my Titan XD Cummins and have had zero issues. It cleans your fuel system and I think it has water emulsion properties too.
@repairvehicle good video and thanks for sharing information. Unfortunately i think the cp4 IS a bad design for US market. it is A good design for Europe but not for the US fuel quality. When they implement some design into a truck they should consider the real market conditions and if the pump is not designed for the US diesel then create something that people can rely on and not force them to use all kinds of additives and all other stuff
@@repairvehicle totally agree. But when we speak about pump designs, cp4 is a bad design for the North American market, prone to excessive failure under real world conditions

Use hotshot, it has lubricity in the additive. The fuel filters dont work best when brand new, brand new they can let more junk go thru. Great video and very good info. I have a 2016 Chevy 2500hd Duramax. With 109k miles. Currently my truck is at the dealer being fix. Unfortunately the CP4 Fuel Pump failed and sent metal shavings into my entire high pressure fuel system. Dealer is replacing all fuel system components. My concern is that they are putting this well known problematic CP4 again and that I will go through this very highly cost repair again. I'm the second owner and not sure if the original owner was using any fuel Additives, I wasn't, but after seeing this video, I will definitely start using them in every fill up. I'm considering converting it to a CP3 Pump since the reputation of the CP3 is very good. Would you recommend this? Or would you just recommend keeping the CP4 and add a lift Pump plus fuel Additives? Will the CP3 perform good on my 2016 Duramax? What are the pros and cons of going to a CP3? Thank you
I had the truck for 22 months before this happened. Since I bought it, I put in 9k miles. Previous owner had just replaced the fuel filter. So, I was waiting for the computer to tell me when to change it. I believe I still had like 45% left. Not sure how often the previous owner would change it. I'm assuming every time the computer would tell him
It's a number one mistake owners make following computer. I know guy who changes fuel filter every time he changes oil, it's expensive way. But it's worth every penny. His truck has cp4 original and 200k miles on the truck with everything original.
An old tried and true trick to add lubricity to fuel that works from what I understand can be used on an 06 or older diesel truck in the US of adding a bit of tcw3 rated conventional two-stroke motor oil to the fuel can work wonders. I have been using a 1/2 an ounce per gallon of diesel fuel in conjunction with a recommended amount of power service per gallon in my '06 5.9 Cummins since the day I purchased it in 2012. The injectors seem to appreciate it from what I can tell. As they are quieter the audible tick that they once had when I first purchased it is no longer there. The truck has also passed emissions with flying colors. I bought this truck a Dodge 3500 when it had 50,000 miles on it. It now has 110,000 and going strong no problems. Not saying you should do it but it works for me giving me the Peace of mind that my common rail high pressure fuel system is receiving some lubricant.
After researching for months and continue my research, I have came to conclusion that these are the best. www.amsoil.com/c/diesel-additives/18/?zo=5257753
Hotshot secret is awesome diesel additive, if lubricity is not your main aim. If you are looking for additive that provides maximum best lubrication for hp and injectors, Amsoil is your only option. Amsoil is the only company that has numbers for lubricity.
Factory air intake is the best to prevent water getting inside. Some aftermarket that are similar to Factory should do a good too. Plain air filter with piece of pipe is not going to stop water entering inside. My cousin had aftermarket air filter and drove through heavy rain on his way home, next morning when tried to start the engine it was seized. If you are in heavy rain or high water drive slowly, to prevent water entering engine.
I have 2012 with 150,000 and FASS fuel pump. Would you recommend installing fuel system saver that has a better screen. 2011-2016 Duramax Fuel System Saver (E05 10505
According to the company that makes this saver, it's not going work 100%. Up to 25 microns vs 80 microns factory. Also from their website "The new design will capture more debris, causing the truck to shut down sooner, creating less damage and downtime in the process." This part is not going to prevent damage from happening, read what it's says "creating less damage" what does it means? You would not have to replace injectors? My preference is to use additives to increase lubrication.
The CP4 is a poorly designed pump bar none! Bosch made one horrible mistake and that was not keying that piston with the roller in it's bore. You have to look at that piston as if it were a roller lifter which it basically is and all roller lifters are keyed or held in place by keepers to prevent them from rotating in the bore causing the roller to no longer roll over the cam. Bosch was planning on spring pressure holding it still but air can cause it to float around causing rotation as well as problems due to water and poor lubrication. I feel strongly that if Bosch had keyed that piston somehow, they would have possibly cut CP4 failures in half. The rest of the design is probably great and it is extremely modular and easy to adapt to many applications but I can't give it a pass due to that one major engineering failure. I definitely sleep better now that I converted my '19 Ram to run a CP3.
I have comments from cp4 owners that have 500k plus miles on their trucks and no cp4 problems. Secret to longevity is quality diesel fuel additives that adds lubricity.
@@repairvehicle I understand the lubricity issues, I ran Hot Shots EDT religiously every single tank and had success with both the CP4 in my Ram ecodiesel and the CP4 in my '19 Cummins. The point is, you shouldn't have to run these expensive additives to try to keep a pump alive. Which brings up another engineering failure of the CP4. It is using the same fuel that is lubricating it's bottom end to be sent up to the high pressure pumping components, so if the bottom end fails, metal shavings will be distributed to the fuel rail. CP3 sends bottom end fuel back to tank and high pressure pumping components recieve fuel that wasn't drawn from the bottom end therefore reducing the chances of shavings making its way to the rail.
@@repairvehicle CP4 is also capable of delivering up to 39,000psi which is great for emissions but what's the point when my Ram can only access up to 29,000psi which the modern CP3 is capable of delivering?
@@repairvehicle CP3s pump more volume at lower pressure due to them having 3 high pressure pumping elements vs CP4.2's 2 elements. Cummins had to overdrive the CP4 in order for it to deliver the volume needed and not necessarily the pressure. Now that they recalled them, they will keep the CP3s overdriven to keep the retrofit simple but it's no longer necessary. The 2021s and newer with factory installed CP3 (CP-ISB21) no longer have overdriven pump gears. 19s and 20s will possibly make good candidates for performance upgrades due to that 1.5 times faster spinning pump. You could install a stroker pump and have enough fuel for big injectors!
dumbest question someone could ask, we live in the land of the free because of the brave, statistics show failures on the CP4 are less than 5% and with 2 of the broken pumps one being submerged in water it isnt hard to believe that most are from negligence or not taking care of their truck. no one is getting the MPGs or the towing that yo can out of a 2020 SD and if you know how to do some preventative maintenance your shit can last a lot longer and youre gonna be a hell of alot more comfortable

So I got it apart expecting to see scoring and debris and the rollers and cam looked new. The two little pistons looked new and this truck had atf added to the fuel not even on a regular basis.
You have real proof it's not bad design it just needs lubrication
I wonder if ATF is the cause of leaking seal on the pump. Diesel fuel mixed with ATF is not best chemical composition for keeping seal protected from deteriorating.
@@repairvehicle yeah, just needs a different source of added lubricity that won't shrink and harden the rubber and it she might go another 300k

Stanadyne has been around for years and they have built pumps for years they have a great reputation
You need diesel fuel additives that adds good amount of lubricity without clogging up DPF.
I also use Better Diesel to cut down on soot. Also monitor DPF% with Banks IDash. DPF goes into regen ok.
Cetane is what cuts down on number of regens. Diesel fuel additives is the solution for cutting down regens and improving lubricity
the reason my fail was the use of eco diesel. worked well for while soon as I got eco diesel the pump fail that is because the lubrification!
Love the video man! CP4 just went out so I will be taking good cate of the new one. Hopefully they will upgrade to the 4.2.

Thanks for the info. What do you think of the 19' 6.7 6-speed vs 20' 10- speed transmission? Should i upgrade to 20+ 6.7??

Fuel additive with good lubricity definitely is going to help. Other stuff, I have not found any evidence.

Have you seen an increase in regen frequency, meaning truck is in regen more often or less often with lx4 lubricity?
2017 titan xd, deleted and tuned at 25k. Have 47k now, truck has been amazing but now you have me worried about this pump. I use Howes every other tank all year round, I'll keep my fingers crossed. Also, besides legal issues, is off road diesel safe to use?
Off road diesel fuel has no advantages over regular diesel, its different color because it's not taxed.
Just make sure to use diesel fuel additives with good amount of lubricity
@@repairvehicle thats a major advantage where I am. $1.80/gallon vs. $2.55/gallon for regular #2

@@repairvehicle Thanks for your help. Will subscribe
Additives must be used not just because of cp4. Additives lubricate injectors, clean injectors. Also, Additives help with dpf filter, less regens.
@@repairvehicle totally agree. But when we speak about pump designs, cp4 is a bad design for the North American market, prone to excessive failure under real world conditions

All in one Diesel fuel additive should be used every fuel tank to take advantage, of lubricity, cetane, and cleaner. Mystery oil does not work, it works opposite. There is no information of any kind before Mystery and after Mystery, it's because it doesn't work. I followed another TH-camr who was big into oil additives until he did oil analysis and he stopped using it.
Use hotshot, it has lubricity in the additive. The fuel filters dont work best when brand new, brand new they can let more junk go thru. I wouldnt overkill on the filter but i would definitely add a good additive like hotshot. Dont let your tank go under a half a tank.
Thank you
In this video I have answers to your questions th-cam.com/video/SXNOTZA-xFQ/w-d-xo.html
How often were you changing your fuel filters?
I had the truck for 22 months before this happened. Since I bought it, I put in 9k miles. Previous owner had just replaced the fuel filter. So, I was waiting for the computer to tell me when to change it. I believe I still had like 45% left. Not sure how often the previous owner would change it. I'm assuming every time the computer would tell him
It's a number one mistake owners make following computer. I know guy who changes fuel filter every time he changes oil, it's expensive way. But it's worth every penny. His truck has cp4 original and 200k miles on the truck with everything original.

@@repairvehicle now don't have any, just trying to undestand how to treat with a modern diesel))

So how can we prevent water going inside the air intake in a rainy day or flooded areas (New Subscriber)
What do you have?
@@repairvehicle I have my stock intake but I'm changing to a aftermarket No limit stage 2 cold air intake

According to the company that makes this saver, it's not going work 100%. Up to 25 microns vs 80 microns factory. Also from their website "The new design will capture more debris, causing the truck to shut down sooner, creating less damage and downtime in the process."
This part is not going to prevent damage from happening, read what it's says "creating less damage" what does it means? You would not have to replace injectors? My preference is to use additives to increase lubrication.

Does switching Fuel Additives affect anything in the fuel system?
No it doesn't. But to get full benefits of new additive, run fuel tank to lowest safe level and add new brand of additive.
Your modified cp3 delivers 39k psi. It's spinning at 1.5 times faster than none modified cp3.
Where's the video for the diff additives?

So many people wanna buy brand new trucks what was wrong with a couple year old truck or older
Nothing wrong with older trucks, no payments and no worries about making payments .
dumbest question someone could ask, we live in the land of the free because of the brave, statistics show failures on the CP4 are less than 5% and with 2 of the broken pumps one being submerged in water it isnt hard to believe that most are from negligence or not taking care of their truck. no one is getting the MPGs or the towing that yo can out of a 2020 SD and if you know how to do some preventative maintenance your shit can last a lot longer and youre gonna be a hell of alot more comfortable
