    9-10-2020: It's been a month since I released a TH-cam video, so sorry! I've been busy with work, and vehicle projects!
    This video has been a long time in the making, I finally got the chance to trail with a 3 year overlanding friend, Marc from the TH-cam channel @the.rooted. progress ! We both use to drive SJ Forester XTs, both had our CVTs die on us and we both had different ideas for our replacement "Adventure Mobiles".
    **Please keep that in mind when you watch this video. These are our adventure mobiles, aka destination overlanders. Although we're trying to tackle rougher than usual terrain, we did not purchase our vehicles to primarily "WHEEL". Case in point, I have 56K miles on my 2019 Passport and it has been only 22 months since I've owned it. living in So Cal, USA, I have to travel great distances to get away from civilization and onroad handling, comfort and efficiency is very important to me. With that said... if you want an offroad vehicle, please note that these vehicles probably aren't the best choice. Purchase a vehicle according to what you need it to do! That's the best advice I can give**

    Great video Jon! Glad I dropped first cuz your video is killer! Such a wealth of information and good videos on providing more background behind the lockers, awd vs 4wd etc. Wheeling is just part of the adventure with overlanding so it's good to always hit a trail to learn and figure out your vehicles capabilities in case your ever out in the middle of no where and just have to send it. Glad the bolt was a broken subframe spacers bolt. Definitely could have been worse, friends makes it better, more fun and safer! Thanks for this video and opportunity to make a video together. Tons of fun and more adventures to come. As long as the stars in our schedules are all aligned... It's happening ☺️ f*ck 2020 for sure! See ya in 2022 Jon!

HOLY SH!T It’s pretty apparent that this was by no means, an easy trail. Compared to Funnel Lake (4WD moderate/Difficult), Laurel lakes (4WD moderate), this trail was much much more difficult. My wheels only slipped once going through the rock gardens to Funnel lake and Here at Otay I’m spinning wheels almost the entire way up 🤣🤣🤣. Good 💩 Brother! I look forward to future collabs!!!

    The line picking skills you get from driving with a car without lockers, limited amount of flex and ground clearance - that is a skill set us "propper 4x4" drivers get lazy about. Keep developing those skills, it will help you even when you upgrade the car.

    We put a Lock-Rite locker ( Detroit style ) in the rear solid axle ( it also had a 2" OME lift&shocks, 31" tires, full underside armor, sliders ) in our '06 Liberty CRD and it made an amazing difference. Much of the time, we found that with the torque of the diesel, the Libby was just suddenly able to climb almost everything without even bothering with 4WD. You didn't even really know it was there most of the time other than the noise when turning, the Libby just suddenly had 2x the traction all the time.
    Lockers can put an extra strain on the rest of the drivetrain, though. We were advised not to put one on the front ( it's part time 4WD, so you wouldn't feel it with the front axle unpowered ) due to the aluminum diff case. The rear axle on the Libby was solid, a Chrysler8 8.25, a diff figured to be roughly as tough as a D44.
    For various other reasons, we've sold that Liberty and are now driving a JKUR after a short detour through a ZR2.
    It's nice to see someone making lockers for Subies.
    Keep up the good dirt work!

      Thanks for sharing! I wondered about the extra stress on the drive train. I watch this TH-cam channel called “dirtnation offroad” and and the main guy drives a 3rd Gen Tacoma offroad. He put in an aftermarket front locker and if I remember correctly, he grenaded his front diff.

    Yep you called out the Cherokee Trailhawk ;-) . It's just different. It's the halfway point between a Subaru and a Wrangler.
    The Trailhawk, especially with the 2 inch lift that I have , has WAY more capability than I have guts to use I think. I've done a turn around on a shelf road before , backing up the hill to gain room to turn around. Locked , low , rock mode... I was blown away. With NO issue , it backed right up the hill , probably 40 degrees or better climb in reverse, and let me turn around and I got right outta there. It was a nerve-wracking moment. I was nervous but my Jeep was not nervous at all. Absolutely incredible stuff.

Since you value suspension travel so much, check out my most recent video where I test the new long travel 2” Ironman suspension on my 19’ forester. Instead is a spacer lift, the shocks and springs are longer so you get the 2” lift AND more travel! I tested the suspension and got a ramp travel index (RTI) of 525. That’s super good for fully independent suspension.

    I recently got the rare dual-range AWD gearbox installed on my Subaru XV Crosstrek. Based on some misinformed opinions, I now have a 4WD vehicle. (I am aware that JonDZ probably knows this notion is incorrect, but I'd like to outline the specific differences here.)
    That notion that anything with a low-range reduction on a gearbox makes it 4WD is incorrect, as an AWD and 4WD are differentiated by the way they distribute power front-to-rear. A 4WD always distrubutes power to front and rear axles when 4WD is engaged and is not designed to have 4WD used in high-traction situations. A 4WD does NOT allow a speed difference between the front and rear axles, which is why it should only be engaged in low-traction situations to allow sufficient tire slip to prevent unnecessary driveline damage and wear/tear.
    An AWD vehicle, depending upon setup, will have a viscous coupler, clutch-pack, or other device that allows operation of AWD in high-traction situations that would not be permissible in a 4WD. "Full-time 4WD" is a glorified AWD system, usually with an available locking center clutch-pack/differential.
    Unfortunately, even with my newfound low-range gearing, my Subaru dual-range AWD gearbox has a mild 1.447:1 reduction ratio, combining for a relatively-mild crawl ratio of approximately 22:1, which is marginally-better than the crawl ratio of vehicles equipped with the ZF 9HP automatic transaxle. I don't have the advantage of torque-multiplication which torque-converter automatics have, but it is better than my XV's 5MT standard 15:1 crawl ratio.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome comment @AWDfreak!!! The word "Lock" or "Locker" is getting used really loosely nowadays. In any AWD vehicle that has a so called "center lock" is not really a lock, and a lot of people are confused by that! Just read some of the comments for this video, haha! To add to your comment, even TH-cam Channels like TFL and SUV Battle are mis-using the word. For example, my Passport has a twin "clutch" rear differential which is technically a high biased mechanical limited slip differential, this is the same thing that's put into the Bronco Sport and the BMW Msport X6, but check out these videos below, they call these things "REAR LOCKERS". Clutch packs are NOT a locker, and you can see the rear wheels spinning at different rates. Same thing applies to AWD with a so called "center lock".

    • @AWDfreak
      @AWDfreak 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring Yup, the manufacturers label them with "LOCK" on the buttons, but the majority of such differentials really are just strong electronically-controlled clutch-type LSD's.
      Modern manufacturer mislabeling gets even more confusing when some vehicles like the Jeep Renegade Trailhawk and Jeep Compass Trailhawk have "4WD Lock" buttons that turn the AWD system into an active one from its default passive setup, and even have a "4WD Low" button that actually places the ZF 9HP into 1st gear rather than using a real dual-range reduction.

      Cooper AT3 4S was an amazing on-road light trail tire. I noticed the shoulders are more squared off, and that probably attributed to turning ability and highway driving confidence. MPG’s we’re definitely better. My coopers were even 10mm wider, but still got about 1-2 mpg better.
      Falken wildpeaks are undoubtedly, a better offroad tire. The shoulders are more rounded, but they have an aggressive shoulder that will help with offroad traction. The tread blocks are also designed more claw-like. On-road just wasnt as good the Coopers. I felt that these tires were noticeably better in snow and ice,
      which is saying a lot, because the coopers are known to be a great snow tire!
      Now, one thing you have to choose is if you’ll go with the P-rated or LT version. I always go with the P-rated version. To get the LT perspective, you’ll have to ask someone else. I’m not sure if the LT version of the coopers is more comparable to the wildpeaks. Good luck on your decision.
      Falken wild peak

    Also having a 4x4/AWD vehicle does not make anyone an experience off-road/all terrain driver.

      This is an old video, so I don’t exactly remember what I said in this video, but knowing myself, there’s no way I’d say my AWD compares to a 4WD. By the way 4x4 means four wheels and four wheels driven. Just like on spec sheets, a car will be described as having a 4x2 drive train.
      I do remember saying that my Jeep friend taught me how to left foot brake. Old school technique that many people don’t know about.

    I really like the ivtm4/shawd, but they missed opportunity by not having at least center clutch close selector or even keep rear locker like vtm4 had just close both rear clutches for limited speed and be done :), I was hopping Passport will have some extra stuff over Pilot

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Make no mistake, iVTM4 is an improvement vs VTM4 in every way. It’s faster acting and is much more effective at lower RPMs. 1st and 2nd Gen Pilot have an 11.6:1 crawl ratio. 2016+ Pilots with the ZF9 speed have a 20.4:1 crawl ratio. That’s almost twice as better gearing! That’s a tremendous advantage and at the higher spectrum of single speed transfer case vehicles.
      Another disadvantage of VTM4 equipped vehicles is that You cant air down the tires and turn off traction control (VSA). By the way, I hope you aren’t taking this all the wrong way, but I love talking about this stuff and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to educate. “VTM4 lock” is not a real locker. With AWDs and anything using clutch packs can’t physically lock. It’s only applied pressure that will break under enough stress. The only “real lock” is an actual mechanical lock. VTM4 lock is the equivalent of engaging sand mode. It simulates a high biased LSD on the rear diff left and right and does nothing to mimic a lock the center diff. I hope you find this information useful! Have a good one ☺️

      @@tallll70 no worries, I’m all about helping people understand how things work. I’m by no means a professional or expert, but I’ll share what I know, ... and there’s a lot to know.
      So, back in the day, the only “full time AWD system was in a Subaru”. While everything is open diff, power is sent thorough all differentials, all the time. The iVTM4 system, is also a Full time AWD system, but power isn’t sent to all differentials all the time. It is considered to react so fast, that it doesn’t matter, it’s a bonafide AWD system. If you’re familiar with the better AWD systems, then you may have heard of the Mitsubishi Evolution 10. Even by today’s standards, that vehicles is bad ass mofo! Unlike a Subaru, it achieves full time awd status because it reacts fast enough to where it makes no difference. Actually, it ran circles around its competition the STI. The Evo 10 has two Twin clutch LSD’s, one in the front and one in the back. iVTM4 only has this type of differential in the rear. So, this brings us back to using the two foot technique and overheated AWD systems. THIS IS EXACTLY 😃 why I use the “ two foot technique”, To avoid overheating the differentials! Spinning tires and helplessly waiting for an AWD system to “react” shows inexperience and will stress out an AWD system. I personally got an AWD temp warning 3 times. Each of those times I let TH-cam know. It no longer happens, I learned how to drive my Passport (with the help from a 4WD Jeep friend). Some vehicles give us temp warnings and some vehicles don’t even have the sensors to do so. In an older Subaru the diffs will cook until they weld together.

      @@tallll70 here’s some info on how iVTM4 works.
      news.pickuptrucks.com/2020/06/updated-2020-honda-ridgeline-goes-off-roading.html
      This is a newer article, and he mentions that the mechanic rear differential can clamp down on both clutch packs to “simulate” a locker. As said in my video, going off my personal experiences, and as shown in this video: “a LSD can only do so much, and if it’s not mechanically locked, it’s not good enough”. The Subaru in this video has an aftermarket rear differential locker a “real one”.
      So here’s how the two systems work together. IVTM4 also utilizes “traction control” otherwise known as a “brake based” AWD/4WD system. ABS is used to brake an opposite wheel to divert wheel torque to the opposite wheel. In iVTM4, it only works at lower RPMs. It’s optimal between 1200 - 1600 RPMs. This means that you have to “crawl” the passport like a 4WD vehicle... something like a Toyota 4Runner. The other part of the system is the Twin clutch rear differential. There’s two clutch packs. One of the left, and one of the right. When wheel torque is to be distributed, it clamps down on that clutch pack. At 16:35 I slow the footage down. I go from a mid hill stop and use the 2 foot technique to get the passport going. I’m content on the throttle and in sand mode. This is the mode that simulates a rear locker. Both clutch packs are clamped down on and both wheels are spinning. It’s violent! Any open diff AWD system would not have forward progress, but because of iVTM4’s mechanical LSD and simulated locker, it was able to power through. It sure wasn’t pretty, and a real mechanical locker like in the modified Subaru climbed the rough part of the trail more graceful. Another thing I talk about in this video is “wheel articulation”. If I had enough “flex”, this climb would be much more graceful.
