- More fun with lost wax casting! This time I tried brass.
Actually it's my first try ever at melting brass. I like a lot the feel and weight that has! The lady came out pretty well too. :D
If you want to know more about my lost wax process here is my first video where I go through the details:

Hey bro what kind of furnace did you use to melt the brass
It was looking pretty bad at on point, but you rescued it nicely. How long had you been doing lost wax casting when you made this video?
I m starting a GoFundMe to get you a hot glue gun.
Haha!!! I have one! It's just to slow to heat up so I use the torch :')
Once again, very impressive. This work will live through the centuries and become an heirloom to whom ever it belongs.
Thanks a lot man :) Let's hope so :)
really cool! I might suggest a few things though having done lost wax casting myself. one would be to change your casting medium for the investment mold. I've used a mixture of sand and plaster and I find that to work best, its soft but will still hold up to the heat with minimal cracks. the second would be to use chicken wire surrounding your piece (mainly on larger pieces) as this helps to add structure to the investment. the second would be a longer pour spout this should be a good deal thicker than your vents but it doesn't need to be the size of the piece of foam, though something the size of a dixie cup provides plenty of pour weight to even larger pieces. on the topic of vent sizes, the vents you used were a tad on the small side. and finally adding a mass of bronze at the end will help to remove any slag and provide a cleaner casting.
Thanks for your suggestion Alex! :) Actually I already use a mixture of sand and plaster! I'll see what I can improve next time :)
*Expects marvelous pen at the end. Laughs at the bic* awesome
Haha! Thanks mate
She is gorgeous! Definitely worthy of a Montblanc fountain pen, for sure. Loving it!
The coolest DIY project I've seen in a long time, absolutely fabulous
Thank you!!! :)
Getting those tiny thumbs to fill in was really good work. I figured they would'nt fill. And taking it from meltout to casting immediately was intelligent as well. Great work.
Thank you sir! :) I was worried about those thumbs too
It's amazing how whole process seemed messy, and you managet to achieve such high quality product! Good job!
Whatever they did in the recent update of Cura, all of those thin webbing pieces completely disappeared on my prints. I so want to get into casting!
Yeah man! :) Casting in fun! I had to leave retraction off because this wax filament is kinda flexible I guess that's why all those webbing showed up
You might need to change your retraction settings in your printer if it allows you, that usually gets rid of strings.
Thank you for casting my Sorceress wonderful job.
Maybe put a link to her in the info?
Hi Louise! Thank you!! I'm very sorry I forgot to link your model, just added your Pinshape page, let me know if you want me to link another site :) How did you found this by the way?! I was going to add a "made it" of your model to let you know but you have been faster :')
I was told via the Twitter:)
Whoops... and I assumed he did the art work. :-/
Nope - she's mine. However, casting my work in metal has been on my to-do - so cool that someone had to motivation to actually do it and make such a fine job.
Too kind Louise! The hard work is yours, I knida understand what goes into making something like this since I'm a 3D artist for an indie game (it's all hard surface very little organic) and I can't imagine how much time went into making a model this beautiful. When I first saw her (on some 3d printing channel probably) I istantly knew it would have been the first complex model that I would have tried to cast. Thank you and have a good day :)
I like how you can turn a few old brass bits of scrap into something really nice, great work.
Thank you! :)
Looks like a museum piece!
Thank you sir :) Too kind!
You can try using baking soda in water as a solvent to clean off the plaster of Paris on more delicate castings has worked well for me in the past
Good to know! :) Thank you alot for the suggestion man :)
Love the reveal seeing her face show up first in the casting.
Thanks man :) I was so happy to see her!
Even though the cast came out rough, the end product is amazing! I love the blemishes and "scars" of a custom project, gives it heart and soul that a manufactured piece would not have. Amazing, man!!! Love the videos and your talent!
Thank you a lot Christopher! A really nice way to see it :)
Such a high level of detail captured there. I didn't realise you could do that. Thanks for sharing
Wow, a diy casting video where they use actual sprews, and vents, and a proportional cooling reservoir?? This is a day to remember!
Haha! Thanks Dori
Cool very nice but a bic pen?? Really??? LOL
Thumbs Up! Keep up the good work!!
Haha! :) Thanks man, the pen has been chosen carefully!
hey, bics and paper napkins are the best idea's friends tho
i guess you have to cast a pen too. so they match.
all hail the king of pens lol
Turned out awesome! Good job as always. Your editing skills make it a bliss to watch and music choice make it pleasant to hear.
Thanks alot! :) Very glad to hear that
Wax filament for 3D? Huh....that's a very good idea.
Yeah that's such a cool product! :)
Great work, excellent skill.
I’ve learned something today.
Thank you
i like the imperfections, it makes it look like its been around for a while
Thanks Toby! :D Very kind!
Oh buddy... It's grate! I haven't seen how lost wax casting works in real life. I knew only the theory. That's very cool!
Thank you brother :)
Absolutely brilliant, my friend. Beautiful and useful, as always! Well done, and thank you. Have a great weekend.
Thank you my dear :) always too kind!
Oh man really, I want to do this as well... I am saving for all the things needed to do metal casting and in a few weeks I am going to buy the things needed.
Thans for the clear video's on how you do this.
Great man!! :) Metal casting is always fun! You'll love it :) Thank you for watching
Mr. Black Beard, are you really going to tell me, that out of all the bad-ass, incredible, and ah inspiring things you make...
YOU DONT HAVE A VACUUM CHAMBER TO GET THE AIR OUT OF THAT CASTING CEMENT!?!?
THE NERVE OF SOME PEOPLE!!!
Just messin with you sir. Very beautiful
Keep up the great work!
Haha!! Thanks man! I'll make one asap :) I already have the fridge compressor!
I think you can use plaster instead of concrete. It will be easier to remove your metal part.
After some minutes, when the metal become solid (but still very hot), you put your part in water and you shake it. The mold will explode in the water.
I'm using plaster :) It looks grey because I mix it with fine sand, it doesn't crack much that way!
Ok, thanks :)
I approve of your use of a Clipper. They are objectively superior to any other type of lighter xD
Learn something new everyday... in high school I was taught that the wax was left in the mold when the metal was poured. TIL: it get s melted out before the pour. I always thought the Lost Wax Process was dumb due to the impurities imparted into the metal. But removing the wax first makes a lot more sense.
Yeah! There's another tecnique called lost foam that works the same (and can be done in sand) but as you said there is no need to burn the foam out, it evaporates istantaneusly leaving place to the molten metal! I've used that method a lot in the past :)
Very cool. I would be tempted to do nothing but neat little statues like this if I had a 3D printer.
Beautiful work mate
Thanks man! :)
Great video BB i have some wax casting videos comming up in the start of the year, im so glad i can learn somthing from your videos, how long did you have the mold in the grill?? Some hours or shorter😁
Thank you brother! :) I left it in there for 4-5hr and probably needed a bit more since I saw some fire while pouring!
AlumiTube
I had no idea wax filament was a thing. This is awesome!
such a cool process, And a very nice result for such a complex model.
Thank you!! I'm really enjoying this lost wax :)
Beautiful work! I have been meaning to make some nice pen holders for my custom pens. I was thinking of a making a wizard holding it out like it's a magical gift.
So the only thing I was disappointed in was the pen you used, LOL!
Very cool - I learned a couple of things - one that there is wax 3d printing filament !!! (Who Knew???) You may want to try putting your mold in a vacuum chamber to remove the bubbles - may save you some clean up at the end. Keep up the great work!!!
Yeah I need to make a vacuum chamber :) Thank you!
Sempre qualcosa di nuovo , sempre qualcosa di bello .
Grazie :) :)
Wonderful design
Nice finish🤠💛😎👍
I always over heat my brass. Good job!
I thought it was cool with the metal in the shape of the cup too. It looked like golden waves splashing up around her.
absolutely wonderful
Awesome work dude
I'm not sure what 'wax filiment' is like, but chasing regular wax is much easier if you freeze it first. Frozen wax can be burnished like silver and cut cleanly with woodworking tools. Of course it warms up as you work, so depending on the piece it might take some time. I learned this when I lived in Australia and it was 40C in the shade.
Thanks! Good to know. I'll try that :)
I think machinable wax has a polymer mixed into it. its like 2 parts wax 1 part LDPE or something like that, so it has wax like properties but its harder and less melty
It looks very well done! I can't help but think that your casting would be much easier if you used all plaster, however.
Thank you! :) I've tried plan plaster and I had problems with breaking mold! You can see some of my other attempts in this video:
th-cam.com/video/FeTprFG__1M/w-d-xo.html
You never disappoint my dude.... amazing video!
Thank you mate!
If you want to make it better you can try to fix the small holes in her legs by using some brass soldering and apply it until it covers the holes, then you just file the excess out and repolish until it looks smooth, works best on alluminum because its the same color., but still better than the holes imho.
The bic pen killed me.
Also, I didn't even know wax filament was a thing. Good work though. It turned out pretty cool.
I know I'm very late to the "what I have to say is important," area albeit, here I go.... Loved the video. I just don't understand why you wasted so much time and money just to make that sorry holder.for that fantastic pen!
Wow that turned out amazing. Great job
Very cool, even the over fill looked arty 😉
Thank you :)
I offer the gods this pen!!
Beautiful. I learnt a lot from your video. 👌
This is an awsome idea :D when I get my 3d printer I will try this to
Sir, Which Camera DSLR Gimbal You are using for shooting this video, Please Reply
came out pretty nice man! keep it up
Thank you!! :)
You had me right up until she is presenting a Bic stick pen. Ha ha ha. Beautiful piece.
Haha! :) Thanks Thomas. The bic has been chosen carefully :'D
Hey that's really cool,, time to make your own play button jajaja
Hehe :) Thank you mate
Freakin' gorgeous work!
Really good result, thank's for sharing!
Did not know there was wax 3d filament. Have been putting prints in plaster and hoping they'd burn out in the furnace
Awesome work! 👍👊
Great work, why didnt he directly cast molten brass into the mold, but he used additional smaller cylindirical thing? And what is the material on which the pen holder girl is standing? Last question, why did he melt thin filaments and connected them, the molten metal would reach everywhere anyway
Please enlighten me
Totally cool. I don't have the basics for any of that.
skim the top of the molten brass just before removing it from the forge and you will have a cleaner casting.
I've done that! but apparently there was a lot of dross on the side of my little crucible :(
Loving the alternative hot glue gun ;)
Hehe.. Thanks Austin :')
Thats really well done.
crazy question: if you make a degassed silicone mould of this, then added the wax and put that in a pressure pot, then put the investment in the pressure pot, would that help there not be as much pitting/clean-up?
Did you find much in the way of shrink marks as the metal cooled? Sometimes this is a problem with bronze and probably brass as well. Interesting surface details can be lost. With lost wax you can make an interior side that would not be seen but would keep the material thin enough to minimize shrinkage issues. I want to try this.
Amazing.. very nice job!
Thank you! :)
Cool work bro!
F****n’ impressive man.
Damn, literally started videoing this same cast this last weekend. Oh well, great minds think alike! Looks like it turned out great! :)
Haha! Right! :) Thank you brother. Can't wait to see your try :) Have a good one!
Amazing love the vid keep up the good work
Thanks!! :)
Beautiful job my friend turned out great!
Thank you brother :)
Amazing job well done!
Thanks!
👏🏽 Awesome!
Thanks!
Thats so beautiful😍
Thanks man :) :)
That's super nice dude
Thanks Victor! :D
Very nice job!
Thank you! :)
Wunderschön! Great Work!
Thanks!! :)
woh! awesome result!
Thanks again!! :) Lost wax
Serious question, and I am a laymen here, why don’t you make a silicon mold from the 3D printed model and then make castings from wax from that?
Edit, a silicon negative
OH MY GOD! Please please please tell me which 3d printer you used that can print in wax?
Gran bel lavoro vecchio!
Grazie caro :D
Still looking for the collapsible friction lock baton! Can you make it or not? It doesn't even need to be damascus. I just want to see your thought process behind the build. And yes, my spelling sucks.
Haha! Don't worry man, mine sucks too!! I don't know when I'll find time to try that man :') I'm sorry, just have so many other projects that are more interesting to me.. But I have it on my list!
Nice work! Merry x-mass
Thank you mate!
Just awesome!!!
Thank you!!
You use type mixture, first you use plaster of paris whom you use by brush but second time which mixture you use for fill flax jar
Any particular reason why you didn't remove the dross from top of brass before casting?
I should have done it better, I wasn't able to pick all dross up that time unfortunatley!
Bellissimo lavoro
Grazie :)
Subscribed!
Thanks hans! :D
very nice
I would have cleaned up the wax a little better so I didn't have as much clean up buffing the casting. But that's my tedious self.
.My only comment sense I have also done lost wax. Thanks for sharing!
If bronze is heated by fire enough, will it give shocks or sparks if touch.
Once again you have done a piece of art...the rotary tool is dremel?
Thanks man :) Too kind! Yeah it's like a dremel. I have a Foredom that works the same as a dremel!
well done, is the molding mass is cement? tell me its composition pls.
Awesome! Would you make brass version upon request to sell if enough people ask for it? Would happily buy for reasonable price. And of course willing to add what ever cut to the designer (Louise Driggers) who should get more than just the cost of the files for download.
Was that a wood burner or soldering iron?
I used my soldering iron, but a wood burner would work even better since this wax mets at 150°C or so :)
