Fort Myers TV Stations Switch Off Analog (2009)

- I'm clearing the last of my old VHS tapes. This is the fourth and final TH-cam video I made with the clips I discovered on them.
WINK, WBBH, WZVN, and WXCW shut off analog service around noon on February 17, 2009. I had a monitor/VCR set up for each (inc. a fifth monitor connected to the converter box). WBBH and WZVN went to "nightlight" programming 24/7, rather than shutting down their transmitters. WGCU and WFTX shut off four months later, on June 12, 2009.
This is an expansion and higher-quality remake of my first two TH-cam videos, since I had the raw footage and a lot of recordings that I'd just stashed away without using at the time.

It's actually weird this was in my recommended. I know I've recently been watching a lot of analog horror videos, but what got me is the fact that *my boyfriend is from Fort Myers.* I've never looked anything about it up on TH-cam.

Okay I remember...most others waited until the June 12, 2009 date.
Just by coincidence, that was also the day that I retired from work.
Fort Myers TV stations are pretty unusual. Normally, stations are supposed to have logos containing numbers from their (former) analog channels (identifiable via PSIP usually, though their digital channels sometimes may occupy their former analog slots). This market, however, has some of its TV stations with numbers representing their placement on cable channels, not their analog (later digital) or PSIP channels. This could probably be a result of Fort Myers' exceptionally high cable TV penetration, which is among the highest in the nation.
Pretty much, Comcast is kinda a monopoly here. I believe they still show when they have to show their station ident. I still remember the numbers from back in the day though.

15 Year Anniversary Today
Interesting seeing the ASO (Analigue Switch Off) in Fort Myers. Here in Melbourne Australia, we had our ASO in December 2013. On our local HSV 7, they ran a special anniversary show just before the switch off.
Some american stations also did something similar before turning into static
Not all did. Just some stations after the end of a movie/show shut off their signals.
Take WNYW for example. After an episode of The Simpsons it shut off without a warning.
We had an analogue TV station in Bendigo Vic shut off right in the middle of a news broadcast with the last words heard being "They could attack at any time..." I often wondered how some of the viewers there must have reacted that day.
And now we will have to go through this again- switching from ATSC-1 to ATSC-3.
Even though digital has many good advantages that we all enjoy, saying goodbye to analog was still kinda sad since we have used analog signal for a long time and that its never coming back on air, digital will come here and stay for as long as it needs and to maybe also be replaced in the future

To be honest, i still chose analog TV because of the signal reception. Even though theres snow in Analog, it's not as annoying as the lag and stutters when theres low signal in the Digital TV.

As the comments here come from folks who are ignorant about how this analog switchoff went down, here are a few facts for ya:
The analog transmission shutdown for all major tv networks and their affiliate stations across the US, was a mandatory order from the FCC.
The analog frequencies that these channels had have been reallocated for mobile networks. There's no way these frequencies can be taken back for television use.
And last July 2021, all remaining low-power analog (LPA) TV stations were ordered to shut down their analog transmissions.
Wonder if people will start hijacking old analog stations more often now? It's not being monitored almost at all these days, I bet.
What if a third party sprung up and seized the old analog stations, and gained the rights to sell broadcasting to buyers?
"Hello, thanks for calling VAB, that's Vintage Analog Broadcasting. Would you like to rent or buy a channel?"
"Yes, channel 29 please, for one week. How much is that going to cost?"
"Seven dollars a broadcast, thirty-five for Monday through Friday and forty-nine for a full seven day week. What kind of content do you wish to provide?"

The analog stations are having their spectrum reallocated for cell phones and other uses, plus a few hundred low-power stations that are still on the air in the U.S.
The FCC's laws still apply to reallocated TV spectrum.
Even then, the low powered stations are getting cleared for T-Mobile to use it. Analog is done for.

cuz they’re owned/operated by the same company, also the 2 were serving as nightlight stations with infomercials telling you how to upgrade to digital television, so they both shared the same legal identifications between the infomercials.

Reuse of analog broadcasting signal. Most of the spectrum that a lot of channels used is now being used for mobile data for phones.
The main reason is to free up spectrum for more necessary things, Such as, Wireless radio communication between law enforcement. Another reason is that analog transmitters require more electricity than digital ones.
Like others mention, analog stuff like TV for instance takes up more space on the air wave spectrum, so to free up space on the air waves spectrum, they (the FCC maybe) had made the idea that switching to digital a thing. From what I understand, the FCC (again, I think it was them) wanted to switch years ago, I think that they began in the 1990s, and they made a mandated switch date years beforehand, but due to perticular events, like the dot com bubble bust, 9/11, the 2006 to about 2008 or 2009 or so recession to name a few forced the date to be pushed back until they decided to force a date on everyone and make the switch official and cement it.
I wonder how much gold is stored in Fort Myers ;)

My moms parents use analogue with a converter 📦
While I had a TV that was hooked up to a over the air antenna that was able to pickup digital, I often used a converter box, that was mostly because I wanted to record some programs that were on over the air that I couldn't record with a VCR. I had a older tv that was built before the government mandated that Digital tuners to be built into TV's in probably Early 2007, the government mandate, not the tv being built. The tv I am referring to has a build of may of 2001, but I had that hooked up to unscrambled cable for 2 years when I got it from a garage sale, and then I ended up setting it up on a converter box. The other tv I mentioned has a build date of July of 2007.
