I remember being at this game, and the stunned silence at the end. :) This and the Michigan game were my favorites from this season. Nothing like being in Ann Arbor at the end of a game with 95,000 silent fans and a contingent of maybe 5K Wildcat fans cheering their heads off. Surreal. What a season. Thanks for the memories, NU.
I didn't watch College Football at the time when this happened, but when I watched an episode of "Greatest Season", I was surprised that Northwestern beat Notre Dame in an upset. This was a very impressive win for Northwestern. After this game, Northwestern went on to finish the season 10-1. This was an outstanding season for Northwestern.
Looking through my old Sports illustrated and seen they had northwestern 79th in preseason! What a great season was watching this game crazy even though its not my team what a great upset!
I remember I was just starting the 10th grade and my dad and I watched this game. I remember (before I knew about football much) telling my dad ND may not win, and he was like yeah right. It's one of my lasting memories we spent together!
NU has won two more Big Ten titles since 1995 and is about to go to it's fifth straight bowl game, a school record, and something most other Big Ten schools cannot say they are currently doing. Even if you're only interested in national championship caliber football (and thus think every program in the country outside 16 or so "suck") it only takes a cursory glance at history to recognize the tremendous contrast between Northwestern's football success before and after this game.
1995, what a season for the Northwestern Wildcats. Sure, it would have been great if they had won the Rose Bowl that year. However, the opening day win over overrated Notre Dame was sweet beyond measure. You couldn't have written a script for this day. The Wildcats, 4 touchdown underdogs, going into South Bend and beating Notre Dame. The stunned silence of the Notre Dame fans says it all. Go Wildcats! Thank you for this wonderful day.
I remember my dad and I were painting that Saturday afternoon in 1995. We would sneak away to watch the game. I remember telling him, “I think NW can beat the Irish.” He didn’t think it was possible. I really wasn’t a fan of any particular team then but now like ND and Indiana University.
I was at another college football game on this day when we all received word that Northwestern had defeated Notre Dame. The whole stadium was stunned when the score had been announced.
Absolutely unbelievable. I graduated NU in '05, but I still remember this gem 10 years earlier. I was at the OSU victory, and it felt like I would imagine this one did, although we didn't make it to a bowl that year. Fitz is gonna take us to the promised land! Go Cats!
I remember before the season started my dad joked were going to the Rose Bowl if Northwestern makes it. We never went but it just shows you no one expected it. I remember NBC kept playing clips of training camp for Notre Dame. The announcer kinda joked well doesn't look like it is working today. I miss that season.
After NU beat Notre Dame, the amazing thing was that NU lost their next game to Miami of Ohio who were coached, I think, by Randy Walker. That would be the only loss for NU until the Rose Bowl. What an amazing year. Can this year's Cats go undefeated???
I'm an Irish fan and my Dad is an alum (I'm a University of Arizona alum, still Irish fan). Dad and I were like, boy, they had better be good. Then when they lost to Miami Ohio, we were pissed. After that, man, that was some team
Hey Steve Shnur go south County Seahawks wow that was 33 years ago wow were getting old I see Joe Dressel every once in a while he quarter backed for St Mary's
Northwestern was only like a 5-6 win team from 1997-2007. Thats an improvement from decades before but NOT tremendous. I have seen a gradual improvement with Fitz as their Head Coach.
Northwestern won the Big Ten again in 2000, so what you're saying isn't really true, but yes, they've definitely seen continued improvement and consistency under Fitz.
Oh yes. That's absolutely correct that they were nothing spectacular. We're still nothing SPECTACULAR, even if we've been a very nice program and just finished a great season. NU will never be like your Buckeyes, for example. That just isn't possible. But I think if you look at history, you'll see that 5-6 wins was pretty big. NU had 2 winning seasons in the 35 years prior to the 94 season! They went 2-41 at one point! Comparatively, 5-6 wins and the occasional championship was a quantum leap.
Marc Mathieu During my two years at Kellogg they were 0-22, and that record doesn't begin to describe how bad they were. But I still went to most home games. Never thought I'd see a winning record let alone a season like this. Amazing. Go 'Cats!

This game goes down as one of the greatest games of all time!
Never gets old. 20 years today. I remember where I was in NY City watching this game. What a season!
drank with some of the players at Hamilton's (Loyola campus) that Saturday night ;-)
They made the Rose Bowl that year.
Greatest NU football year ever...
I graduated from NU in 1995, and right after I left they started winning that year... LOL :-)

The amazing thing about college football, how the histories of two entire programs can be radically changed by a single game.
Thanks for posting this! The Cats will return to the top of the Big Ten this year--can't wait!!

Fitzgerald (no. 51 in these clips) now coaches Northwestern, no?
I met him at an NU basketball game in Evanston a few years after this game. He was so well spoken, sincere and warm. A truly terrific guy.

hes your teacher? That awesome, i met him a few times and he was a nice guy.
So, how many teams have defeated Notre Dame twice in a row on the road?
pat fitzgerald = BEAST player
beast coach
Judging by the crowd noise, sounds like there were actually quite a few Northwestern fans in the stands of Neuter Dumb Stadium that day!
I expect this to happen again in 2014!! Go Big Ten! Beat that team in South Bend.
I think NU did it again in 2014
So who won? I don't remember that one.
@I don't think so awesome
Autry doing his best Barry Sanders impersonation
Hey Steve Shnur go south County Seahawks wow that was 33 years ago wow were getting old I see Joe Dressel every once in a while he quarter backed for St Mary's
schnur to bates...it's still music to my ears.

@ultraollie Yes, Fitz is the coach-for-life at NU
Fitz's tackle at 2:18 is so fundamentally sound it's ridiculous.
the cocky cocky choir boys got out foxed that day. and what a great day it was!
Northwestern won the Big Ten again in 2000, so what you're saying isn't really true, but yes, they've definitely seen continued improvement and consistency under Fitz.
@ultraollie Yes.
@BobbHall how

History repeats 2014!!!
Did it repeat itself in the 2018?? Nope, Irish won. Hahahaha
ND > Northwestern.
I didn't go to one game my four year there.
Marc Mathieu During my two years at Kellogg they were 0-22, and that record doesn't begin to describe how bad they were. But I still went to most home games. Never thought I'd see a winning record let alone a season like this. Amazing. Go 'Cats!
dwanye bates is my teacher
GO CATS BABY!!!!
well now twe lok at it no
Always great when ND loses.
Guess who won today??? NW!!! Notre Lame sucks!
Lol!! Guess who won today in 2018!!?? ND. Northwestern sucks balls. Hahahaha!!!
Thought you could run your mouth and not eat your words????
shnurs good
5-6 win average I meant. Randy Walker finished 37-45 at Northwestern so thats not spectacular.
