  • It's the Roast of Bobby Unser, as the three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 is hammered for almost an hour by IndyCar reporter and host Robin Miller, 1963 Indy 500 winner Parnelli Jones, four-time Indy 500 winner Rick Mears, the Indy 500's most successful team owner,, Roger Penske, and Johnny Rutherford, the three-time Indy 500 winner.
Captured in May of 2018, the panel of Indy legends and icons coming together to humble 'Uncle Bobby' in front of an audience of friends and debt collectors made for a magical night near the Speedway.
Filmed by Marshall Pruett and Travis Long.
Edited and produced by Travis Long.

_"The greatest story is... I think when I fired him."_
    - Roger Penske 😁
It is strange that Unser & Mears are the only two drivers to win the Indianapolis 500 spanning three decades:
    Unser 1968 - 1975 - 1981
    Mears 1979 - 1984 - 1988 - 1991
Fun Fact: Paul Newman's character, Frank Capua, in the classic _"Winning"_ (1969) was portrayed as driving Bobby Unser's car No. 3 - Rislone Eagle/Offy (Leader Card Racers team).
Only difference was that during the scenes filmed from the production itself showing Newman driving, was that the _'Beak'_ nosecone of the Eagle was used during those clips. When in fact the 1968 Eagles had introduced the blunt nosecone version.

RIP Mr. Bobby Unser. Talked my Dad and my Uncle into taking me to Trenton Speedway in the early 1970's. As Italians from NJ they would root for Mario. But my Dad developed a great respect for Bobby because of the way he treated me and all of the fans. Truly one of the legends from the greatest era of Indy car racing.

In 1972, while attending an extended management program at General Motors Institute (Flint, Michigan) our group traveled to Anderson Indiana to attend the Delco Training Seminar for a week. Coincidentally the Indy 500 time trials were going on that week. On the last day of qualifying we went to see the show. There are too many stories associated with this trip, but the most significant of them is Bobby Unser. While brother Al had a competitive car and made the show he was not among the fastest qualifiers. With time running out, Bobby came on the track and began turning average laps at 195 mph. An atmosphere of electricity came over the fans (numbering in the 10's of thousands). Once Bobby turned a lap at 197 mph, we all stood up and began yelling in anticipation that he might turn the 1st 200 mph lap in history. Bobby's last lap was slightly over 198 mph and we were going berserk in the stands. When he pitted we were all still standing and gave him our best effort of applause in recognition of his accomplishment.

I had a businesses partner in the early 80s he was close friends with Bobby form the 70s after seeing the video I should have payed more attention to the managing side of it . But in hind sight it was a great experience.
    RIP Mr Unser.

I didn't expect much - it's hard to have a sharp roast with aging presenters. You KNOW these guys would have been spectacular 10-20 years earlier or more - probably would have concluded in some sort of brawl. But this was fun. Sometimes Miller makes me cringe - but he did a good job keeping this thing flowing and reasonably crisp. Well done, even if it was a thing that only a hardcore Indy fan could enjoy. As a pretty hardcore Indy fan, thank-you!

I'm re-watching this and I was like "I wonder how many Indy 500 wins are up on that stage", so I looked it up
    Driver wins: 11
    Team wins: 20
(If I did the math right, I'd be happy to be corrected, though!)

USAC Killed Indy car racing in the 70's and forced the creation of CART. USAC killed their stock car series which at their height they were arguably even more popular than NASCAR. The fact that so many USAC drivers from all of their divisions ran stock cars as well as having races run all across the country and not just down south gave credence to their popularity. Many of the top names in Indy car ran stock cars as well. Several sprint, midget, and Silver Crown drivers as well along with several driver who actually raced all of those divisions.

@@greggpaul4670 if they weren't more popular they atleast had a bigger territory and had more stars because the Indy drivers would moonlight quite a bit, im pretty sure the south was rabid about stock cars even back then.
