I like to look at my original Audubon prints sipping pre 1900s glass of red wine.

Ben! I write on Audubon and was just prepping a lecture for my Caltech students for my class on birds (my last two books have been about birds) and your lecture started automatically! Hope we can visit soon and hope you're well - Dan Lewis / The Huntington

Excellent talk! Next time consider leaving out “he mass murders” birds. Harvests a few of each species may sound a bit more scholarly, accurate, and less throwing him under the bus. How else would they have been precisely rendered back then? Other than that, this was wonderful!

This speaker is basically full of it. Audubon did not enthusiastically delight in the "mass killing of birds" at all. That was never the focus for him as an artist. Nor was he a "mass murderer of birds." He never killed off entire flocks for the sake of his art, after all. He needed samples. He killed one or two, perhaps at times a small handful of birds of one species (such as his parrots) to act as his models. No stop motion photography back then. It was NECESSARY for him to kill sample members of the various birds that he painted. There was no choice. And let's face it -- without his work, if nobody else had arisen with the same kind of devotion and talent, science would have lacked depth for a very long time.

Before this ghastly man was hit over the head by the proverbial plank, he was one of the worst bird killers ever. It is not true that he took only one or two, he took dozens, and for fun too. In the 1800's he finally realized after many hints by others regarding the dwindling numbers of whales and fish, that maybe people like him might be to blame. Hence the extinction of the passenger pigeon, the Labrador duck, the great auk etc. I would not have one of his original works (the backgrounds of which were painted by other artists, totally uncredited (Maria Martin was one) if it were given to me. Unnatural and wooden poses, no birds ever twisted themselves into such ridiculous positions. (No wonder, they were wired into position after being murdered by this so called artist.)
