They should know he founded his hobby via selling slaves and stealing remains of native Americans, among other crap. It's well worth actually looking up his writing, how he viewed these actions, how he viewed these people as less than him and barely human. Behind the bastards podcast has a episode on him with a lot of these horrible quotes and history (not child appropriate).
White washed history is poor education. Children deserve to know the actual history so they make sure the history doesn't repeat.
