By the end of 1942 early 1943 the US had one carrier in pacific operation (borrowing one from the UK USS robin) while Japan had four. The US was not dominating the Pacific war by the end of 1942 and Midway did not result in loss of many experienced Japanese pilots most of whom were recovered, you also can't just ignore the Guadelcanel campaign of 1942 and its significance which was in its totality more significant than Midway. In reality the soul of the Japanese navy was still very much existed, literally a month after Midway the US navy suffered its naval worst defeat ever at Salvo Island losing 5 cruisers at once despite outnumbering the opponent, the soul crushing truly took place in the marianas in 1944.

As a World War II TH-camr who likes focusing on the Pacific Theater, I have to say it’s cool to see this being shown in big budget games. I hope it interests more people in the topic! Although watching this gave me a headache from the historically accurate side of things, I will say the models looked pretty good and never thought I’d see a high-def version of a Yorktown-class carrier hangar and flight deck in a game.

Agreed. I was a huge Midway buff as a kid 40 some odd years ago. There's a lot wrong with who was where when. For instance it's not that the fighter support wasn't there yet, it had already been drawn off. Midway was mostly a study in how planning is essential, plans are useless and outrolling the other side for luck can have huge implications. Still pretty cool from a game visual perspective.
What do you mean, the Dauntless was clearly the best fighter of WW2, superior to the zero in a dogfight. Too bad the American navy only used them for dive bombing. =P
Out of every youtuber that played this mission has failed by killing and smashing into their allies, but this guy can aim and actually play the mission without issue.
@Goosa Poosa no it couldn’t, take it from a actual pilot one miracle instance doesn’t make it better the a6m2/5 will fly circles around a dauntless, it can out climb out turn and out gun a spd. throw the 2 into a same altitude situation with a 1 or 2 circle fight unless that tail gunner has the aim of Chris Kyle the spd is a sitting duck hints why a lot of the times they would be escorted by wildcats or hellcats, it’s a purpose built dive bomber not a fighter
For all of the inaccuracies, it is actually really cool that the altimeter works at the start of the mission, but after taking damage, it doesn't. The needle is hanging free and swings left/right as the plane maneuvers.
The altimeter never made any sense throughout the entire segment, nor did the altitudes they did any of those things at - and the UI displayed 1700(ish) meters at one point, while the aircraft's altimeter displayed 1900ft. It basically didn't work from the very start - nor did they ever set it to begin with xD. ~ Speaking as an irritated pilot.

There were four Japanese carriers sunk during the battle, Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū, and Hiryū. The carrier which Wade successfully hit at the end could be Kaga.
As I watch this game play, I think of my uncle Keith, Lt. j.g. in the U.S. Navy during world war 2. He flew a Corsair fighter off the U.S.S. Hornet (CV-12). He lived until he was 90 years old. A happy-go-lucky fellow, always with the smile and the laughter when our family gathered together. I miss him.
"As if this operation wasn't hard enough. Now the entire war is on the line?" Yes, ensign. That is what battles are for. To affect the outcome of a war.
It seems this took inspiration from the style of the 2019 Midway film. But, it has none of the historical accuracy of that film (as far vents and people involved) but it shares many of the technical inaccuracies of that film and adds some of its own (ships being too close to each other, inaccurate models and unrealistic dive bombinng etc). But its just a COD game at the end of the day. If they made it 100% realistic, it probably wouldn't be very exciting as in this video game format. The good news is that the real battle is actually several times more interesting. There are several amazing books and audio books and lectures on youtube. I recommed Shattered Sword by Jonathan Parshal and Anthony Tully as probably the most detailed account of the battle.
@@Averagedude2024 yeah, but I think the Midway film had too much flak too. Or too many planes shot down by it. Honestly, the mission concept and the graphics is great, but they should make the plot based on the real Battle of Midway. The intro cutscene is pretty much right though, but they should have added the squadron of TBD Devastators attacking the fleet (this isn't necessary), but it starts wrong from 7:58 onwards. Here's my suggestion for a better concept of this mission: First, the first Japanese carrier to be hit by a bomb in the battle was the Kaga (the second carrier in the mission), and then the Soryu (the aircraft carrier was the first to be bombed in the mission was the Soryu), no air battle was shown between the sinking of the Soryu and the attacks on the remaining carriers. The Dauntless Squadron began diving bombs on the Akagi (offscreen in game) after that. After the Akagi was sunk, they should at least make a cutscene of the Japanese attack on the USS Yorktown. Before the attack on the Hiryu (offscreen in game) begins, the player will deal with the Zero squadron. After finishing the wave of aerial attacks, the player will dive bomb the Hiryu and the mission is over (Honestly, this will make the mission longer and more challenging like the Black Cats in World at War). Second, like everyone said, Dauntless can't outrun Zero. Edit: The cutscene starts at 14:49 is one of the best cutscenes in the CoD series, but was made for such a historical inaccurate WW2 game (i know this is just a game).
@@sztypettto Only on one of the 4 japanese carriers on Midway can be plausible due to the design for the Hull and the deck (Kaga), and wasn't sunk by SBD´s from Yorktown, were from Enterprise (also the Model is from an Hiryuu Class, not the Kaga)
This mission looks like it'd be awesome, if I could simply get past the initial dive bombing part. I'll drop the bomb and the boat literally sucks me down to it lmao. I'll be about 30 meters up and then I'll body slam right into the ship by going straight down. I think my game may be bugged.
This campaign really had a potential to either do again old good 2-3 separate small campaings like in bulk of WW2 themed old CoD games, or do something simillar to BF1/V singleplayer format. The execution of this multinational special force is just too ludicrous and underdeveloped. They really wanted too hard to combine it with this new CoD universe where everything is interconnected.
@@hadihambali1627 I enjoyed the formula, both in Battlefield 1 and V, not necessarily campaigns themselves. From V for example I only liked one. And with how this Vanguard made it's campaign, I would far more prefer if they removed that entire multinational squad of super soldiers fairy tale and simply made small, contained stories set around events present in flashbacks which make bulk of campaign.
The carrier is Enterprise (3:41, number"6" on the bridge), and the plane's number starts with a S, therefore it's VS-6. He hit Soryu first (bridge on the right, two stacks), dogfighted for five minutes, climbed into the clouds, and miraculously reloaded (Warthunder arcade mode? lol) and dropped another 1000lb on Kaga (bridge on the right, single stack, and "ka" written on the deck). The 100lbs on the wings somehow stayed there despite the planes weren't equipped with them IRL due to range and performance issues. It's funny because in real life the guy who sunk two carriers in one day was from the other squadron, VB-6 not VS-6. And the two carriers he hit were Akagi and Hiryu, not the two in game. And even then the game hit Soryu and Kaga in reverse order of what happened in real life. This somehow managed to be worse than the shitshow of a CGI movie Midway. Also I like how the rear seat gunner is calling out the altitude...
Yep the person was Richard "Dick" Best I remmember. SBD's did carry 1,000 pounders but it could only carry one under the belly for enought support, and imited its range significantly.
@@ryanc5195 The problem was the two extra 100lbs on the wings. The SBDs only carried a single 1000lb for anti-ship duties, as the extra 100lbs would reduce its range and therefore is reserved for mostly CAS against smaller ground targets.

Why are ships literally on top of each other and not in battle formation? And, the Dauntlesses and Devastators launched completely sperate attacks. The SBDs got delayed and lost, but eventually found the carriers. The torpedo bombers where shot to shreds, almost all were lost.
Dick Best was one of the most successful American pilots that ever destroyed two enemy carriers in one day. Unfortunately due to breathing bad oxygen after the Americans won the battle, he never flew again.
Would have made more sense in an action sense to stick the player in a Wildcat, but I guess they wanted the player to single handedly win the Battle of Midway.
I totally agree, game looks outstanding but gameplay is just quite sad. For example in the North African mission there was a German soldier using a STG44...
As someone who is a fan of naval history and knows a lot about this battle, the inaccuracies just pisses me off. Rant along with historical info: The amount of planes that you shot down during this battle literally makes you a double or triple or idk Ace (a Flying ace is a credit given to a pilot who shoots down 5 or more enemy aircraft). The dive bombers and torpedo bombers didn't attack the IJN fleet at the same time, the torpedo bombers arrive first and their attempt was a complete failure due to how terrible their planes and torpedoes are and the Zeroes shooting them down during their runs. When the dive bombers attacked the IJN fleet, there were no Zeroes over the fleet since they were chasing down the retreating torpedo bombers. During the battle, the dive bombers only had one bomb (even though the SBD can carry two bombs, they only used one so they can carry more fuel). The fleet formation is soo incorrect, the ships are too close to each other, in real life they're more farther apart from each other so they can maneuver to avoid bombs and torpedoes. During the dive bombing sequence, the Japanese carrier is soo slow to the point that they just want to die. The developers reused many models (Kongo, Kaga, Akagi) on the IJN fleet to the point where their carriers look alike, and the overabundance of Kongo everywhere. After dropping their bombs, SBDs would try and get out of the hailstorm of gunfire, not to try and become fighters (sure you can add the argument of "Swede" Vejtesa taking out 3 Zeroes in an SBD, but this is way more different as seen from this level). I'm tired of ranting here but after seeing this, i kinda now appreciate the movie Midway (2019) even though its kinda boring and mediocre, at least its more accurate than this level. On a side note, AFGuides I have no hate towards you, you do have some good content (especially the memes) i'm just complaining on how inaccurate this is. Also sorry for some bad grammar and i may also have some things wrong, so if there are some things incorrect be sure to let me know.

Many games from the past had already proven that one can still go the exaggerated route while being historically authentic enough that it doesn't disrespect the people from the real event and melt historians' brains. I don't hate this mission though, it's the least retarded among all the other missions of this dumpster fire of a game.
Hey, chill! All I'm saying was that I absolutely adored the Battle of Midway. So when I saw that this mission was going to be in a Call of Duty game, I was happy, surprised, and…all around excited. But to be honest, I didn't know if it did actually rain during the battle, soo…rain in Midway seemed new. Random, but new.
This is the most innacurate version of the Battle of Midway i've ever seen, it's a disgrace. I'll just point out a few problems: Firstly, the american carrier screen is way too close to the carriers themselves. In real life, the carrier screen was formed of an outer ring of destroyers, a second closer ring of cruisers, and later on a last ring of battleships. Remember, the objective was to defend the carriers at all costs. Secondly, there wouldn't be any pre-flight checks and i don't think that the tower clears you for takeoff like modern days (copied from Battlefield 3.) Third, from the cockpit, the aircraft looks level with the carrier, whereas it should be at a higher angle than the deck, tailwheel. Forth, no attack group would ever huddle all of their aircraft together, the devastators were much slower than the dauntlesses, so the devastators took off first, and the dauntlesses took off later, the plan being for the dauntlesses to catch up to the devastators at the target. Fifth, the zeros appeared way too early, they should be defending their carriers, and where are the patrolling and maybe the escort wildcats? And it's clear that shooting down the zeros is literally a copy-paste of Cod WW2 where you're in the P-47, oh and the fact that your bombs replenish mid-air, seriously? You should be returning to the carrier for replenishment and refueling. Those are my major issues with this mission alone, but trust me, i have a lot more for the whole game, almost every mission.
Also another point to add besides every single thing that makes no sense as its really just a fantasy fever dream of a game set in WW2. Is that the whole hunt for the japanese carriers were a long fight and it took considerable effort and luck to destroy them. There was so many moments where the carriers got helluva lucky through using dodging tactics. Plus the americans lost ALOT of planes at first getting even anywhere near the carriers. I forgot the numbers but the kill ratio was on the japanese side for a while. And it was some really lucky and skilled pilots that managed to do the first hits which slowly added up until they had them in a unlucky situation where the carriers were in a spot they couldnt get out of. In short taking down the japanese carriers at midway was nothing short of alot of luck, effort and sheer stubborness on the american side.
It’s not that deep. At no point did they say this game would be historically accurate and cod releases a game every year so they don’t got time to put in every little detail. And nobody plays cod for historical accuracy, it’s an arcade shooter not a simulation. People who play cod, play for fun. I doubt they actually care about the inaccuracies the game has
@@benthomas2232 We did have T-34/85 with main gun that shoot rounds every 3 secs in WAW and it still awesome. They are arcadey but retained some of the historical context there which i appreciated. But this, nah.
I'm am thoroughly and pleasantly surprised at the ship and plane accuracy...fully expected Iowas, Yamatos, Essexs, hellcats, etc. The gameplay, well, it's call of duty so no surprises there.
Agreed the models are actually quite accurate to say the least. During the battle of midway the U.S didn't have many any battleships present. The largest ship they had were the carriers and cruisers. And the class of cruiser portrayed here is a new orleans class heavy cruiser which is also accurate. Although the ships are way too close to eachother but that is somewhat excusable since they wanted the scene to be more cinematic. One thing that bothers me is that the american cruisers are missing their gun turrets. Maybe the mission is unpolished im not sure but if you look hard enough you will notice that the gun turrets are missing.
On the Japanese side its also accurate. The Japanese did have battleships present along with cruisers and destroyers. The ships modeled here are also accurate since from what I can gather the models are either from the Nagato, Kongou, Fusou or ise class battleships. Yamato was present during the battle but was part of a separate fleet of warships meant to engage with the American fleet in a surface engagement. So props to the COD team in making the models accurate
Damn, never heard of Call Of Duty Vanguard before. I'm not expecting COD franchise would make battle of Midway mission, this is awesome. I hope they make axis side campaign like "Battle of France" where the mission as Guderian's tank crew breakthrough Ardennes or "Battle of Singapore" where the mission as Japanese Soldier attacking from Malaya (Malaysia)
I'm sorry but like, this presentation of the battle for Midway is just.... bad, i think if Activision really wanted to copy Battlefield on something, it shouldn't have been that flight check cameo that is better in execution and presentation but rather the opening of Battlefield 1 where if you die, your perspective switches to another pilot or rear gunner to empathize the lethality of dive bombing into flak fire rather than getting more Japanese kills in a single flight than most aces. Instead this just looks like something i'd see in a arcade machine, follow a scripted sequence, fly around in circles and shoot the same, uninteresting enemies at what's meant to feel like high speeds but in reality, just feel slow and sluggish from both Zero's and the aircraft your flying. I understand its not mean to be a milsim but actually respecting the events rather than this romanticized attempt of one of the most important battles within the Pacific Theatre, in respect to the companies American ancestors who some may of been there themselves (The Ancestors not the peeps in charge) at the battle of midway. If this is meant to be a highlight of Vanguard then its high time they should get someone different to direct the games.

Thank God this is meant for entertainment purposes only, as this mission is a massively inaccurate presentation of the Battle of Midway. Here's my list I noticed: 1. The Japanese and American fleets must have been only a few miles from each other, as it takes no time to get to the enemy fleet. It took over 2 hours in real life. 2. Apparently, the Dauntless dive bomber is just as agile as the Japanese A6M Zero and has unlimited ammunition. Jackson would be the actual reason the Japanese fleet was destroyed, not the blazes caused by the bombs. 3. Dive bombers apparently are responsible for protecting torpedo planes, not fighters. 4. Japanese ships apparently don't shoot at any American aircraft below 2000 feet. 5. Jackson's Dauntless apparently has 2 500 lb bombs instead of the possible lone one carried below the fuselage. Did he drop his 500 lb bomb on one carrier and his wing bombs on the other? 6. Only 2 pilots at Midway, Norman "Dusty" Kleiss and Richard "Dick" Best, hit 2 aircraft carriers during the battle. Kleiss hit Kaga and Hiryu while Best hit Akagi and Hiryu.

So happy and proud to see a lot of people here more focused on the historical and technical inaccuracies of this battle.
Agreed, not the best depiction of history

@@Gen_ShadowCompany_203 Actually, all Japanese carriers had the red sun on their carriers. Hiryu had it as well, so did Zuikaku and Shokaku

@@ryanc5195 The problem was the two extra 100lbs on the wings. The SBDs only carried a single 1000lb for anti-ship duties, as the extra 100lbs would reduce its range and therefore is reserved for mostly CAS against smaller ground targets.

Rant along with historical info:
The amount of planes that you shot down during this battle literally makes you a double or triple or idk Ace (a Flying ace is a credit given to a pilot who shoots down 5 or more enemy aircraft).

1:24 Why is there a US Army Air Corps sergeant on a US Navy carrier? At least they gave him the correct piping for his garrison cap if he is in the air corps, but everything else about that uniform. The research team DOES NOT deserve a raise.

Midway was my most favorite WW2 battle! I was so hyped to see how it'll go in Vanguard, and boy did it not disappoint!

Me: It’s a game just have fun with it
@@BellaZuikaku4785 Me: it can’t be fun when it’s a whole lotta fake contrived bullshit
@@BellaZuikaku4785 Me: Just "because it's a game" doesn't give you a perfect excuse to completely ruin and fill an already amazing historical event with unnecessary random ass bullshit.

We did have T-34/85 with main gun that shoot rounds every 3 secs in WAW and it still awesome.

They just wanted to recreate the flight mission from BF3 but from a different era, with historical inaccuracy
I remember the great battle between MY TEAM vs ENEMY TEAM. It was in my history book in high school
Isn't this a sledgehammer production?

Those guys flew P-47s, cool stuff
Thank God this is meant for entertainment purposes only, as this mission is a massively inaccurate presentation of the Battle of Midway. Here's my list I noticed:

SBD-2’s dogfighting with zeros
This game really confuses me on to how historically inaccurate they can make this game
Swede Vejtesa did just that, downed three Zeros on one mission and even cut off one of the Zero’s wing in a midair collision.
While the SBD with a bomb load was no match for a Zero, once it was free of its cargo it became, not an equal, but an opponent not to be underestimated, several accounts of the day have Japanese CAP Zero's chasing SBD's after their runs and not being able to down them.
SBDs were used as emergency fighters, mainly to intercept japanese strike aircraft. Although not super common, more than a few cocky Zero pilots have ended up in front of the sights of a desperate Dauntless pilot and paid the price.
@@jeremyweaver7689 Not in a dogfight with literally tens of Zeros on air, and also loaded. SBD Dauntless can be used as emergency fighter... but not in a populated dogfight like Midway, its literally suicide
